Guns don't kill people, people kill people....but guns sure make it really easy to do. The point that I think most liberals are trying to get across is that banning guns won't get rid of gun violence completely but it WILL help lower it significantly. And maybe small steps are what's really necessary such as stricter regulations and a complete ban on assault rifles. But we HAVE to move in that direction for the sake of all these horrible massacres and other gun crimes that you don't even hear about on the news.
There are over 300 million guns in the united states as of 2016 which translates to 93 guns per hundred people. living that's just in the united states there are 870 million known firearms throughout the world today. That doesn't count illegal guns no one known about like black market guns. Next i have found more crimes are committed with illegal guns or with people who aren't legally allowed to obtain guns because of crimes or any other reason. So now it comes down to why take it out on the percent of the population that do things legally and enjoy it.
The Atlantic asked its readers about their first memories with guns, and one reader responded with "We lived in southwestern Colorado my first six years of life (1949-1955). My father had a double-barrel shotgun, and a single-barrel one, a .22 rifle, and a “deer rifle.” We ate more venison than beef and almost as much pheasant as chicken.... I never knew where he kept those guns; I never touched one that he didn’t offer. We only saw them when he cleaned them or packed them to go hunting. He let my older sister and me shoot one of them to feel the kick and power and hear the loudness.... When he passed away in 1981, a year after my mother had passed away, we took inventory of their estate, but we never found those guns. Perhaps he sold them or gave them away or simply kept them hidden somewhere so that no one would be able to find them and shoot someone accidentally" (Green). The issue of gun control has been an increasing cynosure in society, growing in its controversy. The polar opposite sides seem to grow further different from one another, with one side supporting and the other opposing gun control laws/actions. Those who support it tend to believe there should either be no place for the firearms in society at all or that there should be very strict restrictions on who may obtain a given firearm. Those who oppose the laws believe there should either be little to no change in current restrictions or, as the National Rifle Association (NRA) advocates, there ought to be
Boom! The little boy kills his first deer while hunting with his dad, they’re both ecstatic, the dad experiencing all the skills he has taught his son over the years finally pay off, and killing his first deer with the same gun he used thirty years ago. The first firearm was made 653 years ago in 1364, to fire the gun, you had to hold a burning wick to a touch hole to ignite the powder, causing an explosion which sends the projectile out of the barrel. Since then, guns have evolved tremendously, in Germany, 1885, the first semi automatic handgun was made, allowing the user to fire shot after shot without reloading, until the magazine is empty. This gun was made for police officers around the world, allowing them to have an advantage over
Change is eluding our sight. There is no doubt that the debate of gun control has been prominent for several years. However, very little in the way of change has occurred. The question has shifted from how to establish gun control, to how can we avoid gun control. We the people have reached a point of no self control. We have been swept away by the blur of freedom’s sweet kiss. We hold a real issue at hand, now is most certainly not the time to sit around and ponder about the issue, we must take action in order to keep our communities safe.
Every so often the media and news feeds flood with reports of a mass shooting. Families mourn. In the days that follow, calls to action can be heard, and there is a demand for change. Sometimes minor legislation passes, but in the United States extreme change is rarely seen. Other developed nations provide an opposite comparison. Following the Port Arthur shooting in Australia and the shooting in Great Britain, both countries organized for significant gun reform.
In the United States of America there is currently a foremost problem with gun control. Some people desire guns and others desire no weapons at all. These two parties so far have not even tried to compromise. The problem with not having guns is that when a criminal gets a hold of one no one has the arms to protect themselves. Also our 2nd amendment states that people have a right to bear arms. But on the other side if lots of people have artilleries then it is likely some people that are not in the right mind will have one. For example, there have been 52 school shootings in the past year alone leaving 30 people dead and 53 people wounded. Neither of these options are good enough by themselves to solve any problems. What I propose is that we
With gun related crimes steadily increasing, the spotlight has been on a solution to cease firearm problems. Firearms have been around for hundreds of years, and they are included in self-defense, sport, show, and unfortunately crime. The danger of the situation immediately escalades when there is a firearm involved. A plan to fix these issues has been talked about and looked at throughout the recent years, but there are many different aspects you have to look at when trying to find a solution for this problem. However, not all gun related situations are at fault, for most people follow the law, using and collecting the guns for sporting, collecting, and self-defense purposes. The second amendment in the constitution gives citizens of the United states the right to bear arms. Areas of concern that can be focused on to prevent future danger in firearm situations are gun control laws, process undergone
Did you know that in the United States almost 100,000 people are shot or killed with a gun in one year? 10,527 people die a year in handgun related incidents in the United States. This number, by far, outweighs the number of gun related deaths in countries such as Sweden, Great Britain, and Japan, which number 13, 22, and 87, respectively. What is the reason for such drastic differences in numbers? Sweden, Great Britain, and Japan are all countries that have stricter gun control laws than the US. Mind you, these are just the number of deaths caused by handgun related incidents; however, that isn’t counting the thousands of deaths caused by other types of firearms; in one year, around 30,000 Americans die in gun violence.
One of the most argued topic in America right now is probably the issue regarding gun control. Hundreds of years ago, our Founding Fathers probably created the second amendment in order to give us the citizen the right to protect our own safety, but who would have thought that right has led to many heartbroken incidents, where numerous innocent people died as a result of a bad guy owning a gun. Along with most of us today, we still consider that the second amendment in the Bill of Rights guarantees our right to protect our self by the right to legally own a gun, and the right to bear arms. Though we fought against gun control thinking it’s taking away our rights, we do not recognize that the freedom to own a gun had actually led to the
From 1988 to 2001, the usage of anti-depressant drugs in the general public increased by four-hundred percent (Swanson). The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary took place in December of 2012, and during 2014, firearms were used in 88 percent of teen homicides, and 41 percent of teen suicides (“Suicidal Teens”). On February 28th, 2017, the Trump administration repealed a firearms regulation that prevented mentally disabled persons from owning guns. At the same time, teenage mental illness is on the rise, specifically in cases of depression and anxiety. A report from the Surgeon General shows that over 90 percent of adolescents that committed either suicide or homicide have or had a mental disability. Mental disabilities such as depression and anxiety put teenagers at a high risk for homicides and suicides. Teenagers who are stressed due to school, lack of parenting, puberty, bullying, and other factors can develop depression, anxiety or another mental illness. Allowing these teens easy access to firearms proves time and time again to be very dangerous. In some cases, the families of these teens have never been assessed to see if they can responsibly store firearms. The only background check performed is on the owner of the firearm, meaning that a person may own the weapon even if another family member living with them legally cannot. Loose gun control laws allow families with physiologically ill children to have access to firearms, without first checking to see if the disabled children in the home are responsible enough to be around said firearms. Repealing gun control laws instated by the Obama administration will cause an increase in adolescent firearm-related homicides, suicides, and tragedies similar to the one at Sandy Hook Elementary.
The issue of gun control is one of the hottest topics in the U.S. today. Although it is widely discussed whether citizens should own guns, the founding fathers of our country understood that the right to own and bear arms is a fundamental right and restricting them infringes on the 2nd amendment, which was put in place to protect U.S. citizens. Gun control need to be less strict for the welfare of the U.S. crime rates. Although guns need to be less monitorized some weapons such as military grade assault rifle cannot go unchecked. For the sake of the U.S. gun control needs to be weaker because it’s proven that ownership of guns does not increase crime but scares away criminals, control over firearms denies self-defense, yet, people that are pro gun-control
In America today, there are a lot of problems that cause our country to divide. One of which is the distribution and use of firearms. Many people in the U.S. own guns or at least know someone who does. The banning of guns is a discussion that many people are taking sides on. There are many reasons why guns cannot be banned. Everybody should be able to purchase and use firearms because they are protected by the second amendment, they can be used recreationally, and they will protect us if we encounter any danger threatening our lives.
It is widely agreed that the United States has a very large number of guns compared to other countries. If guns really keep Americans safe, the United States would be the safest place in the world since it is estimated that 270 million firearms are owned. Compared to the world richest nations, the United States has the highest gun accidents, murders, and suicides among them all. An investigative report conducted in 2012 by Mother Jones Magazine found that between 1995 and 2012, the number of guns has increased by 50% while the population has increased only by 20% (Doeden). Firearm injuries are the second leading cause of injury death in the United States. In 2010, the percentage of homicides committed by firearms was 67.5 percent. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence estimated 97,820 people are shot and killed in the United States yearly, averaging 268 people per day, since 1972 (Newhard pp13). Unfortunately, with some many Americans killed by guns every day, shootings in the United States have become so common, many citizens have grown immune to the news.
Gun violence has prompted many debates about America’s love for guns and its impact on society. The United States has more private gun ownership than basically any other country in the world. The violence of guns has taken lives all around America and killed many US citizens. Including the Aurora movie theater Shooting, The Columbine Shooting, and the Arapahoe High School Shooting massacre. Personally weapons are generally classifieds within three broad categories: rifles, handguns, and shotguns. Shotguns and rifles are both considered a.k.a “long guns”. A semi- automatic weapon fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. And will automatically reload another bullet into the chamber ready to be fired. The fully automatic weapons often referred to as a machine gun. Will fire multiple bullets within a single pull of the trigger. Look here's my opinion on gun control. Laws for gun control ain't gonna work. To me guns aren't weapons they're tools that work as long as there in the right hands. But remember this, guns don't decide who lives who dies. People decide on who lives and who dies. So don't find another dumb excuse about why congress should make gun laws stricter. If you didn't know their is an unofficial slogan for the National Gun Association “ guns don't kill people, people kill people” (NRA). For the person who is reading this just stop and think. Shootings do not simply happen from the gun itself, but the person who has it's finger on the trigger. Now if you create stricter gun laws, it won't only restrict those who obey the law, but will also most likely increase crime even more. I'll give you an example, what if you're with your family at home eating dinner, and let's say you're all eating ribeye steak with mashed potatoes on the side with greens. And while you and your family are eating a man breaks down the front door with, let's say a glock 17c. What are you going to use if you don't have a weapon to disengage the criminal or robber that is coming inside the house. Look it doesn't even have to be a rifle. Simply just a small handgun. If you don't know how to use a handgun or rifle effectively there are classes you can take to better ready yourself just in case something terrible happens just
It’s the middle of the night someone hears burglars in their kitchen, when seconds matter what do they do? Most people would say reach for the phone and call the police, so they call a man with a gun. When seconds matter the police are minutes away, as an American citizen you must have the ability to protect yourself. We are talking about gun control, America is impeding on our rights and freedoms because they are taking away our right to bear arms and ensure a free state. In 1791 the Second Amendment was put into place to ensure the American citizens safety from other people or the government. "The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Constitution, Draft 1, 1776. Gun control is not as effective as it may seem because history has shown it is the root of all evil.
