The MLB didn’t start until 1876 with the National league and then they brought in the American league in 1901. The first World Series was held in 1903 with the Boston Americans beating the Pittsburg pirates 5-3. Baseball hasn’t always been glorified as it was though. It experienced rough times in the 1940’s when African Americans weren’t allowed to play in the major league but thanks to Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby, they eliminated the racial discrimination in baseball and outside the baseball world. Baseball has also experienced rough times during the WWII and Vietnam era. During the time of war, players would go and serve in the military and baseball would have to replace them with less talented players. But Upon return, baseball returned to its once prestige self.

Before there were players such as Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Barry Bonds, Major League Baseball was strictly white players only. The color line of Major League Baseball excluded black players until the late 40’s. This didn’t stop the colored men of America from playing the beloved American sport. The creation of the Negro Leagues in 1920 by Rube Foster gave colored men a chance to play in their own professional league, similar to the Major Leagues, but for African-American men. The creation of the Negro Leagues was a result of the Jim Crow Laws, state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States. George Herman Ruth, better known as Babe Ruth, is an American baseball hero due to his successes that have allowed him to become a household name even after his passing. His great legacy lives on, but for those not alive during his reign over baseball, it is sometimes hard to grasp the Babe’s true life story, which is where film comes into play. In the several films about Babe Ruth, many differentiating perspectives about his life are introduced. In The Babe Ruth Story (1948) and The Babe (1992), we are shown two very different versions of the ‘Great Bambino’. With the help of Ardolino’s analysis of the deification and deconstruction of Ruth in Reel Baseball, it is easy to see the similarities and differences between the two Hollywood Babes. Ardolino states that, “In fact, these movies are dialectically related: the first is an attempt to sacralize Ruth’s checkered life, and the latter is an attempt to replace the hagiography with a Dickensian psychodrama of a bumbling Bacchus who belches, farts, indulges his appetites, is haunted by his past, explodes irrationally when he is called ‘incorrigible’ and never gains any measure of self-control” (115-16). Ardolino’s chapter thoroughly discussed the portrayals of Babe Ruth as a character, which brings to light the similarities and differences portrayed in both Hollywood films. After screening the Hollywood films, we move to screen the documentary about Ruth, a blatant deification, which treats his life story much differently.

We will discuss how they were an integral part of the African American culture and what they meant to their communities. There are not many places that you can find information regarding the Negro leagues such as artifacts, personal account of events, or an accurate chronological timeline of what occurred during the ‘Negro Leagues’ era of baseball. Additionally, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is not just simply a representation of what happened for baseball specifically during that era. The Museum is a representation of how African Americans were finally able to advance in the United States. An African American playing baseball with ‘white folk’ was quite literally unheard of until Jackie Robinson came to fame with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Baseball was called the “the national pastime” for the first time in December of 1856, years before the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, even came into existence in the year 1869. Baseball continued to develop and gain popularity throughout the end of the 19th century. Baseball spread after the Civil War by prisoners of war and soldiers where it was encouraged by officers as a way to pass the time and it allowed soldiers to take their minds off the situation at hand. The soldiers went home and brought their new knowledge with them, spreading the newly popular game to their children. Thus, baseball found its roots and started to grow into its title of “national pastime”.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) was a segregated organization until Jackie Robinson came along. Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in the MLB. Before Jackie, all African-Americans had to play in the Negro Leagues because they were not allowed in the MLB. Jackie Joined the league in 1947 and got a lot of backlash from fans. People did not want him to play because they thought that he was not good enough or that he was not worthy enough because of his race. Jackie and his family would get death threats from angry whites that wanted him out of the league. His house and belongings would get vandalized and destroyed. People would verbally and physically abuse him but Jackie would stand strong and take it like a real man. Despite the amount of hatred and backlash Jackie Robinson endured his first year in the league, he was named Rookie of the Year for the National League. Jackie Robinson was a very important role model for African-Americans, he showed bravery, courage, and determination.
