The Yankees are that team due to their statistics, players, and past that make them the greatest of all time.
First of all the Yankees have had some of the greatest baseball players of all time. Starting with Babe Ruth, known as The Homerun King with over 700 home runs, or Aroldis’ Chapman with the fastest pitch ever thrown at 105 mph. Next, there is Joe Dimaggio who won three MVPs, thirteen All-Stars, and was a two time Homerun leader. There is also Mickey Mantle who had three MVPs, twenty All-Stars and was a four-time Homerun leader. Some other extremely famous Yankees baseball players are Yogi Berra who was a four-time slug leader, National league MVP, and a four-time All-Star and Derek Jeter who was a five-time Golden Glove winner, World Series MVP, Rookie of the Year, five-time Silver Slugger, MVP, and fourteen timAll-Star. The Sox had immediate success with players like Cy Young, Jimmy Collins, Tris Speaker, Smokey Joe Wood, and Babe Ruth throughout its early years. Boston won the first World Series in 1903 followed by championships in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. One of the most well known baseball players in history, pitcher-turned-outfielder Babe Ruth was originally from the Red
Derek Jeter is known as an influential player in the world of sports and on a generation of people growing up during that time. He played for the NY Yankees for 20 historic seasons known as the prime for their organization. His position for them was shortstop and never played anywhere else for the Yankees. The Yankees were only professional team he played for and one five championships for them. This was very rare for a player to spend 20 years with a team that drafted them because during that Era most players were only a part for 4 years at most. Derek is known by the Yankees as the captain of the Bronx’s and of their organization. The biggest wins of his career were during the 1990s and 2000s. They won most games during that time on his dependable hitting, clutch base running and terrific plays at shortstop. Deter turned out to be the Yankees all-time leader in the category for hits with 3,465. He also
The Chicago White Sox of 1919 were a clear favorite to win the World Series. They had all of the odds on their
With the way the author, Bryson describes George Ruth’s upbringing and the tough hand that Babe was dealt with at such an early age, it seems as if he painted a fairy tale with happily ever after at the end. To read and to try and grasp what Babe Ruth was able to achieve, it is the most unbelievable underdog story that I have ever read. While I was reading, I had the feeling that Bill Bryson believed that George Ruth was a good person and even coming from such a rough city such as Baltimore. He even disagreed with what babe said in his autobiography. In the book, Bryson says “The opening sentence of Ruth’s autobiography is, “I was a bad kid.” Which is no more than partly true” (Bryson 107). By just the second sentence in the second paragraph, it is clear that Bryson thought, even since Ruth’s childhood, he is a good kid who was stuck behind the 8-ball. Coming from an impoverished family, having almost all of his siblings die, losing both his father and mother who were “distracted” anyway. His mother slowly dying of tuberculosis and his father single-handedly running their saloon during all of his waking hours just so they could have money to survive (Bryson 107). While reading this initial background on Babe Ruth, I didn’t know just how rough he had it. I assumed like most of the athletes in today’s world, his family was able to pay for him to have baseball lessons and training with some of the best trainers that money can buy. Knowing that Babe Ruth was the epitome of an
The New York Yankees were a very popular baseball team in the 1960s because of their ability to go far and win the world series 2 times in the 1960’s. To some, including myself, baseball is the greatest sport that has ever been played. It is a game played by two opposing teams made of multiple players, but only nine players per team play at the same time. To be part of one of the thirty teams that get to play professional baseball, a player has to play the game extremely well (www.baseballhalloffame.com). When a player plays the game better than most have played he gets rewarded, usually with lots of money in a big contract. Then there are those rare players, the 244 elite players of the game that have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Being inducted in the Hall of Fame is the utmost of baseball fame. The players listed are remembered forever.
Joe DiMaggio was one of the best baseball players of all time. He set many records, including the longest wining streak in Major League Baseball history, it lasted 56 games. He came to America as the son of poor Italian immigrants, but grew up to be an American Icon.
The American League East has been a very competitive division for decades mostly because of the heated rivalry between the Red Sox and Yankees. That is still the case in 2016 except the other teams like the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays have this division even more entertaining in recent years. This season I think the Red Sox are the best team not only in the division, but also in the American League.
Babe Ruth was born on February 6th, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. He played in ten World Series. Babe Ruth had a .342 batting average. Throughout his baseball career, he hit 714 homeruns. Babe Ruth played in a total of 2,503 games.
(swing bat) Well, there's my 60 th home run. I am babe Ruth, if you didn't already know. And I want to talk about my life. I was born February 6, 1895 and I was one of 8 children in my family. With my parents working long hours I was a troublemaker, since there no one was to watch me. At age 7 my parents sent me to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys. I skipped school a lot and caused a lot of fights around my neighborhood. That's when my parents realized I needed a more strict environment. At school I started to fall in love with baseball. At age 19, my mentor Brother Matthias invited Jack Dunn, the owner of the Baltimore Orioles, to watch me play baseball. Jack Dunn was so impressed that
George Herman Ruth, better known as Babe Ruth, is an American baseball hero due to his successes that have allowed him to become a household name even after his passing. His great legacy lives on, but for those not alive during his reign over baseball, it is sometimes hard to grasp the Babe’s true life story, which is where film comes into play. In the several films about Babe Ruth, many differentiating perspectives about his life are introduced. In The Babe Ruth Story (1948) and The Babe (1992), we are shown two very different versions of the ‘Great Bambino’. With the help of Ardolino’s analysis of the deification and deconstruction of Ruth in Reel Baseball, it is easy to see the similarities and differences between the two Hollywood Babes. Ardolino states that, “In fact, these movies are dialectically related: the first is an attempt to sacralize Ruth’s checkered life, and the latter is an attempt to replace the hagiography with a Dickensian psychodrama of a bumbling Bacchus who belches, farts, indulges his appetites, is haunted by his past, explodes irrationally when he is called ‘incorrigible’ and never gains any measure of self-control” (115-16). Ardolino’s chapter thoroughly discussed the portrayals of Babe Ruth as a character, which brings to light the similarities and differences portrayed in both Hollywood films. After screening the Hollywood films, we move to screen the documentary about Ruth, a blatant deification, which treats his life story much differently.
Since the abolition of slavery in the USA in 1883 and through the first half of the 20th Century, African Americans had been in a constant struggle to try and gain an equal footing in society. Like many aspects of American life, black sportsmen were segregated, and no African American had played professional baseball since 1884. For this reason, the integration of Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first African American to play Major League baseball in the modern era had a grand impact on the entire country. From the moment that Dodgers owner, Branch Rickey decided that Robinson would break the colour lone, the history of sport and the history of African Americans would not be the same again. The importance of his integration and the effect it had on civil rights can be looked at in many different ways. It had great effect on the African American community, instilling pride and belief once again in the American Dream for many who had once thought it impossible. It also had significant importance for civil rights groups, and brought about a figure who would fight his peoples quest for equal rights until the day he died. It was a significant risk taken by both Rickey and Robinson, professionally and personally. But it was a risk that both in the short term for African American sport, and in the long run for African American civil rights, was ultimately well worth taking.
“I’ve heard people say that the trouble with the world is that we haven’t enough great leaders. I think we haven’t enough great followers. I have stood side by side with great thinkers- surgeons, engineers, economists, men who deserve a great following- and have heard the crowd cheer me instead. I love my profession. I like playing baseball. I love the fans too, but I think they cheered too loudly, and they cheered for the wrong man.” This was quoted by Babe Ruth explaining why he isn’t selfish and why he thinks that others aren’t honored enough for their positions. Leading up to Ruth’s career, he had a terrible life. He later became one of the best baseball players of all time. And now, he inspires others. Because Babe Ruth was confident in
I believe that you Chicago Cubs are doing very well. I hope after your loss in the National League Playoffs, you guys rebound, and make it to the World Series next year.
