Results: After following my solutions of avoiding multitasking, positive results immediately showed. First of all, I started gaining more sleep as I stopped using my phone before bedtime. Secondly, I am more focused and concentrated on my homework, instead of constantly checking my phone everytime I hear a buzz. Lastly, I noticed that I improved physically, mentally, emotionally. Getting adequate sleep will positively affect your daily routines, and habits. Summary: All in all, the data shows how multitasking will make you take longer to finish your work. Alina Tugend then uses case studies to show how multitasking can cause loss of focus and impairment in motor activities. She then shows how multitasking can actually delay your progress on completing projects by constantly switching to different tasks. We assume that we can handle all the information thrown at us together, but in reality it is too much. An experiment done by Thomas Buser and Noemi Petter involved three groups. The first group consisted of participants who worked on two tasks consecutively for twelve minutes each. The second group had to alter between these two tasks every four minutes for the same amount of time. Subjects in group three were not notified of how many switches were going to occur and for how long. The three group’s total time spent on each task was equal to prevent any lurking variables. The results of this experiment showed work schedules can be an important factor in productivity. The results emphasized that participants who focused on one task at a time, had a higher productivity rate than the subjects that tried to multitask. If you find yourself not able to get everything done in your day and still have enough time for sufficient sleep, then you may need to cut back on your daily routine. Sleep is the single most fundamental requirement for having the energy we need. Chronically not getting enough of it can also lead to more serious problems. A higher risk of health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke should be more than enough incentive to ensure we all keep this basic requirement for a healthy and long life in place. Habits to ensure you get enough sleep include having a regular bed time that you stick to and being sure to turn off all those smartphones, tablets and laptops a couple hours before going to bed. The blue light they emanate has been shown to interfere with sleep patterns.

Another benefit of sleeping enough is the fact that it helps rebuild the memories that may have faded, it reactivates them. Sleeping boosts your creativity. In fact, people who sleep on a task after having worked on it, tend to solve difficult problems more effectively. It also supports growth by releasing a hormone that is necessary for muscle development.
While students feel they are great at multitasking, studies show that they actually perform academically at a lower level than those who do not multitask. A study was conducted by a respected research lab in Stanford University. Clifford Nass, a professor of communications at Stanford University, introduces us to a study conducted on carefully-selected high chronic students who multitask (Digital Nation). The experiment was structured for students to identify numbers as odd or even, letters as vowels or consonants. Professor Nass wanted to test how quickly these students can switch tasks without losing focus. The results showed that people who multitask are slower than those who do not multitask. While slower does not mean horrible, it should raise a sign that if they had focused on their work only they would get better scores in their respective studies. It means that multitasking decrease the ability to think and focus after switch task.
