When Norse F. Rabalais who was born and raised in Simmersport, Louisiana (Avoyelles Parish) was a child there was no navigation lock to lower ships to the Mississippi, the water just poured out, ships with it, and flowed into the distributary known as Atchafalaya. A lot of parishes above New Orleans and quite a bit north of Baton Rouge (Louisiana’s capital) there’s a navigation lock in Mississippi’s bank allows ships to drop out of the river. Because of nature, they drop up to thirty-three feet then can go west or south. This is something very strange and rare between the river and its adjacent terrain. That adjacent terrain is known as Cajun country. The local parishes are Pointe Coupee Parish and Avoyelles parish.
On the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, a strike is being held by the Non-Tenured Faculty Coalition, which is an established union consisting of 500 non-tenured faculty members. The group of lecturers, researchers, clinical professors, etc. arose as a result of their short contracts and the University’s refusal to negotiate their terms.
In the 1930’s the BSEIU was operating within a favorable political opportunity structure. It was operating within a reform American political structure. The 74th congress passed the Wagner Act, also known as the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. The act provided unions the right to organize, collectively bargain, and strike. The act also created the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Between the years 1934 and 1940 the BSEIU saw its membership rise from 1,500 members to nearly 30,000 members. (Witwer, 2003, p. 922). The membership ranks swelled to 250,000 members in 1960. During the 1960’s the union’s membership consisted of mostly female, African American and Latinos. The BSEIU aligned their organization with the Civil Rights movement that was crystallizing during the 1960’s (Slater, 2004,p. 1536). In the 1960’s labor union organizations faced
Unionization has brought a very negative impact upon AMA strength, power and membership. Small unions are now merging together with other unions to create a big impact and force in political power play and the best example is, The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) with more than one million health care worker members. (Evans, 2008. See Box 175). Unions representative have started barraging with different political parties and are playing great role once negotiated by AMA alone.
Dartmouth College dates back to the early days of America, founded in 1769 by “the Rev. Eleazar Wheelock”. It was actually founded for the purpose of giving education to native Americans, and there was one native American who helped raise the money needed for the college, in this way being interesting because the Indians often had hostile feelings towards the whites. It was an interesting idea to create a college mainly meant to educate the Indians, who were from the white’s view uneducated and barbaric, and that the college would go on to become as prominent as it has.
The atlatl is an ancient paleolithic tool used as a lever to lengthen the distance that a dart can be thrown, compared to using just an arm. But does an atlatl really lengthen how far a dart travels compared to throwing the dart by hand? Based on accumulated information, the hypothesis was: If an atlatl is used to throw a dart, then it will lengthen the distance that the dart will travel compared to throwing it by hand. This is because the atlatl is a lever that acts as another joint of the arm, increasing both the leverage, force, and energy of a throw. To test this, I created an atlatl using a wooden branch with a spur sticking out of it, paracord, a rock, tape, a bamboo stick, duct tape, knife, and a saw. I carved the wooden branch to
Due to the capacity of work being conducted and their treatment, unionization of graduate student workers has ensured well deserved privileges and protections under the National Labor Relations Act. Reasoning for unionization can be seen from the graduate student point of view, timeline of legal events and the recent NLRB
“Cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education,” as the outstanding author, Mark Twain, once said. College is the way of life and why people begin successful career paths every day. Joining college is a major step in becoming an adult and beginning a new chapter in one’s life. Universities all around the nation offer terrific programs that match the interests of everyone. The University of Missouri, also known as Mizzou, would be a terrific college to attend for a quality education. It provides a variety of different fields to study, it offers an excellent education at a fair price, and has amazing organizations for students to join in a beautiful location.

the union's collective bargaining power to negotiate with employers on their behalf. This basic right gives union members more power. Unions can help protect employees being unfairly fired and can provide legal assistance if necessary. Union members also benefit from having the power to go on strike.

At the beginning of this project, it was our intention to interview an executive member of a local Union to gain the perspective of what unions face in modern society regarding membership and the benefits they provide. We initially planned and scheduled our interview with an executive member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 354, Russ Lamoreaux. After being rescheduled and dismissed multiple times, our team opted to find a different subject to interview who would be more responsive and willing to provide us with helpful information to further our education. This became an interesting lesson for us as a team and changed our perspective of unions because it was difficult to get anyone to answer the phone, respond to emails, commit to a scheduled time, or even just provide an honest answer if they wished not to participate. We wondered if this is how unions regularly conduct business and how difficult or frustrating it must be as a member of management in trying to negotiate with a union to come to an agreement if this is how they operate. Our connection with Ms. Siggard was completely by accident and while we anticipated a different direction with this assignment, she provided
The Hoosier Life, one of the main reasons I decided to apply to Indiana University-Bloomington (IU Bloomington). I believe and support the idea that every day is a new adventure on a historic campus. After the completion of my two year associate from Oakton Community College I believe that IU Bloomington would be a great school to further my interests and get my bachelors in Management Information Systems. IU Bloomington takes keen interest in developing its students. I believe that such an institution would be the perfect place that would allow me to nurture my skills and talents. I have always loved a good challenge, and the rigorous coursework accompanied by my curiosity to know more would be the perfect place for my personal growth. Along
Managing staff in a union environment may present challenges. Secondary to a 1975 United States Supreme Court decision, NRLB vs. J. Weingarten, Inc. 420 U.S. 251, discussions with employees who are members of a union, in which that conversation may result in discipline, require the manager to provide the employee with union representation during investigatory interviews if it is requested (Phillips, 2015). Therefore, managers may not possess the opportunity to have crucial conversations in a timely manner secondary to a delay associated with bringing together the appropriate parties for a meeting. It is through a collaborative effort by Human Resource partners and union representatives that employee grievances are addressed and resolved. If the parties are unable to reach an agreement, an arbitrator may be employed to settle the issue. Nearly all employee complaints are handled via the HR/Union collaborative process and no formal tracking of protests or concerns is in place.
