Everybody in this world, has at one point been nice to somebody. Some people show this trait in daily life and there is one character in particular shows this trait and many other. That character is Atticus in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus demonstrates all the pillars but in particular 3 main pillars. Those pillars are kindness, respect, and honesty and all three of those pillars will be explained in detail and how atticus shows all those pillars. Throughout the book, Atticus is very caring, and kind to one another. For example, in chapter 9, Atticus demonstrates an act of kindness and shows compassion to Scout, “‘This time we aren’t fighting the Yankees, we’re fighting our friends. But remember this, no matter how bitter things get, they’re still our friends and this is still our home.’” (Lee 101-102). In this quote, Atticus is telling Scout how a community stays together and how it stays whole even if parts are pulling in different directions. Also he is telling her that if you have a fight with a friend he is explaining how they still are your friend and how you are still their friend. This is one of many showings of Atticus displaying kindness. …show more content…
Respect is a very strong word that is very key to being a good person in life. In this quote, Atticus comes down to a table full of food and was in awe, “Atticus’s eyes filled with tears. He did not speak for a moment. ‘Tell them I’m very grateful,’ he said ‘Tell them-tell them they must never do this again. Times are too hard…’” (Lee 286). This quote explains how Atticus’s is so grateful for what he gets. He comes downstairs the morning after the trial, to a whole table filled with food. This shows how respectful Atticus has been because since he represented Tom Robinson in court, people want to repay him. Atticus is one of the all-around nicest person, I have ever read
There are many instances in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird that show how kindness and generosity are more effective than rudeness and disrespect. One example of this is when Atticus is talking to Scout about understanding other people’s point of view. He tells her, “you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 36). This passage illustrates how Atticus is trying to instill good morals and values in his children. He believes that if you try to look at another point of view, you will be more successful in understanding others. Many people are closed-minded and unwilling to accept any perspective except their own. This can lead to a lot of misunderstandings and
One central character in Atticus is Atticus Cody. Atticus is a sixty-seven year old white male with blue eyes. He always talked pleasantly with everybody and cares dearly for his family. He hopes for the best of Scott, one of the two sons he has and wishes that he stays happy. All Atticus wanted was for Scott to be happy and know he was loved by him.
Atticus as a lot of respect for everyone and this became evident when he went to the Robinson’s house to inform Helen of the death of Tom. On page 321 it says, “A little girl came to the cabin door and stood looking at Atticus. Dill said her hair was a wad of tiny stiff pigtails, each ending in a bright bow. She grinned from ear to ear and walked toward our father, but she was too small to navigate the steps. Dill said Atticus went to her, took off his hat, and offered her his finger. She grabbed it and he eased her down the steps. Then he gave her to Calpurnia.” This quote portrays Atticus as warm, friendly character that has a degree of courtesy to everyone no matter how big or small, black or white, how old or how young. Likewise, on Scout’s
Respect, the feeling of deep admiration for someone elicited from their abilities, is fought for throughout the world, from schools, to businesses, to governmental parties. Everyone strives so much for this attribute because from a very young age, parents teach their children that they should obtain dignity and respect. Yet, how does someone gain respect? In order to acquire respect, an individual must develop traits that are profitable and admirable. Developing these qualities, such as patience, kindness, sympathy, and responsibility, can turn into an onerous job. However, Atticus, a character from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, displays a variety of very profitable traits. Although many examples exist concerning Atticus’s virtuous character, three stand out above all others. These features, modesty, foresight, and bravery, are clearly presented in his character.
“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience (New American Bible Colossians 3:12). In the story, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus was chosen to defend a black man named Tom Robinson. As stated above, God has told all of us to be compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, and patient. In the story, Atticus took on the challenge of being compassionate in his life. Atticus showed compassion because he stood up for Tom Robinson, he did not fight back against anyone who disagreed with him, and he comforted his children during the hard times.
John 13: 15 says “For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.” This verse clearly reveals that Christ has set the greatest example of what a life should look like. The many characteristics that Jesus exhibited while on earth should show in the life of any man or woman’s claiming to be a christian. Continually seen as a sort of God figure, Atticus Finch demonstrates strong character throughout To Kill a Mocking Bird. While he portrayal of Atticus’s perfection throughout the book may seem humanly impossible, but realizing that the characteristics he exhibits are Christ-like can greatly improve one’s understanding of living like Jesus Christ. Atticus Finch shows self-control and respect, forgiveness, and humbleness, all of which reflect the life of Christ.
Such as when Atticus tells Scout, “ If you learn a simple trick Scout you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks...you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (pg 39). In short, he is trying to tell her to not judge anyone. For example, when Mrs. Dubose had died, Atticus found another way to teach his kids a valuable lesson. To further illustrate, Atticus tells the kids, “I wanted you to see something about her...I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand...it’s when you know you’re licked before you being but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (pg 149). This was yet another way Atticus tries to set a good example to his children of how to act in the face of trouble and hard
Introduction To Kill a Mocking bird describes the life of a family living in the 1930’s. The father, Atticus, is a lawyer and a widower. His two children, Scout and Jem along with their neighbor Dill, explore the territory of the Radley’s. When dill arrives they share the local story of Boo Radley, a social outcast who was said to have tried to kill his father and was locked in the courthouse basement. When he returned he was said to only go outside during the night; causing kids to avoid the house at all costs.
One of the most common lessons we hear is to love one another, and despite being filled with slurs and hate towards Atticus and his children, To Kill a Mockingbird repeats that lesson continually. While engulfed in a very controversial trial, Scout watches as Atticus is attacked and rather than retaliating, she sees him reach out and show compassion. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, one sees the great things that can come from treating others with dignity.
In the book to kill a mockingbird Atticus seams like a boring old man to his kids scout and jem. He's appears to be a typical lawyer. He reads a lot and does his job. But there is a side of him his kids haven't seen yet.
To kill a mockingbird is a book about teaching, Atticus was a good example for a teacher. He was the father of jem and Scout, Jem and Scout learned a lot of life lesson with him one of them is about respect. Atticus respect all kind of people but the Ewells, when Walter Cunningham came over to their house for dinner Atticus offered Walter syrup to pour it all over his food which was not normal to do.
In to Kill A Mockingbird Harper Lee demonstrates a series of characterization traits through a character name Atticus. Atticus is the main focus in the novel as he goes through problems and how he deals with the problems. The setting takes place in Maycomb Alabama where there racism. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the character of Atticus Finch represents Lee’s idea of special justice by demonstrating generosity, compassion and mercy as he responds to conflict.
Atticus shows many great traits throughout the book that makes him a great father and a great influence. One of these is humbleness. On many occasions, Atticus almost lowers his achievements and never brags. He sets a great example for his children, teaching them not to be proud and boastful, but to be humble and grateful. This is very apparent during the scene where Atticus shoots the mad dog. “‘If your father's anything, he’s civilized in his heart. Marksmanship’s a gift from God, a talent – oh, you have to practice to make it perfect, but shootin’s different from playing the piano or the like. I think maybe he put his gun down when he realized that God had given him an unfair advantage over most living things’” (Lee 130). He kept his best
Atticus mentioned that he wants Scout and Jem to be raised without bitterness and with the usual maycomb disease. Atticus raised his kids without stereotypes, and racism fogging up their way of perceiving people. Most white people won't be happy about spending time with a colored woman and Scout is more than happy to hang out with her when Jem wants to be left alone and in church. Sout doesn't see things like racism to Calpurnia. Scout even thought about saying that Calpurnia was a lady as well when their Aunt said she needed to learn how to be a lady. Scout also doesn't realize the family may have financial troubles as she had to ask Atticus about it. Her aunt on the other hand is racist as shown with the family reunion and how their own kin
Atticus and his children both had to deal with the adversity against them because of the communities differences in opinion. They kept their integrity through it all with Jem and scout having their father’s moral advice and support to help them. Though many succumb to the pressures put on us, there are also many Atticus’s out there that have a moral and ethical conscience backing them up. They become a role model that breeds integrity through their moral practices. “Before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience.” (Lee, pg.108)
