Courage within Atticus is not restrained to his professional life, but also evident in his family life. It is hard for Atticus to raise his children without a wife, and to face the constant family ridicule. Atticus displayed a large amount of courage in the novel, especially through accepting the Robinson case. He knew that defending Tom Robinson meant downgrading his social status and possibly risking his and his children's lives, but he still did what he had to do. He also displayed courage when he decided to face a lynch mob alone to protect Tom Robinson. Atticus lived up to his own definition of courage. Atticus knew that his children didn't like or understand Mrs. Dubose and he made them read to her every day for a month. After her death he explained to them that Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict and her goal was to give it up before she died. Through this, he taught his children what real courage is and this sends a direct message
Atticus’ courage in this event involves him standing up to the mob with lethal intentions while he was unarmed and he was willing to put himself at risk or be possibly killed to save Tom’s life. Atticus stands for what he believes in to the highest capacity and he would not become a bystander or a part of the problem. As a result of Atticus’ boldness, Tom asks “Mr. Finch? They gone? Atticus stepped back and looked up. They’ve gone. Get some sleep, Tom. They won’t bother you anymore.”(pg. 206) This quotation reveals Atticus standing up to the gruesome mob making Tom safe, unharmed and alive. Furthermore, Atticus is safe and unharmed and most importantly, the mob did not accomplish their horrific goal of lynching Tom Robinson. Thus, his courage lead to the positive outcome of survival for the both of them. In addition to the lynch mob event proving Atticus’ courageous acts, Atticus also is courageous when he shoots the rabid dog in front of the Radley’s

“It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends,” said Albus Dumbledore (J. K. Rowling, chapter 17). Although it takes courage to stand up to anyone it is more difficult with a friend than an enemy because you are opposing someone who would normally be backing you up for an argument. This quote is shown to be true throughout the book To Kill a Mockingbird. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus, Scout, and Jem learn the importance of helping others.
Atticus defends a clored man,Tom Robinson, in a town full of "the disease". First of all when the mad dog came Atticus defended the town from the rabid dog. Atticus defends Maycomb and gets rid of the racism that the dog represents. This forshadowing helps us know that Atticus will try his best to take a step toward justice. It takes courage and dauntlessness to do this. Atticus explains to his son that at the end of chapter 11 what real courage is. "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."He explains how you don't only need physical but also mental courage. He refers to the gun in hand as him killing the mad dog/disease and the idea of being icked before you begin refering to the fact that he started out knowing that there was no way he would win this case yet he had to have caurage to fight for justice. The novels: To Kill A Mockingbird and When A Girl Is Born show a common feature of having the courage to call in question the social norms of their society. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus challenges Maycomb's ways as he defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. By doing so, he is accepting the impossible by admitting that a black man is innocent and hence accusing a white folk of being guilty. As a result of doing so, he attracts many hardships. For instance, Bob Ewell disrespects Atticus by spitting on him, in return Atticus says, "So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something I’ll gladly take." This quote shows how Atticus considers the ignorant and cruel paradigm
Moreover, every other character in the story can be said to have courage, especially Atticus. The book revolves around Atticus and how he has no fear to defend a black man. Atticus is a lawyer that always had justice and never accepts injustice. He defends a black man named “Tom Robinson” who is accused of rapping a white girl whose own father had infact raped. “I’m simply defending a negro his name’s Tom Robinson” “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (Lee,100). These quotes show that Atticus is not afraid and is brave enough to hold his head up in town even if he defended Tom, an inferior in their society. It also shows how well educated and mature he is that he even connects his job to his kids and he always tries to be good to be the best in his kids’ eyes. He wanted his kids to get along with other people and for them to learn courage from them like Mrs. Dubose, for example.
Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that fear and courage was not in the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” This quote relates to Harper Lee’s Atticus Finch. In the novel, Atticus Finch is a symbol of bravery in Maycomb. His children, Scout and Jem, learn from him, and that is what causes them to lose their innocence, and focus on how people are acting in Maycomb towards racism. Atticus defends a black man, named Tom Robinson, even though people that supported his opponent, Bob Ewell, were mean to him. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus portrays the theme of courage in the face of evil through defending Tom Robinson, the confrontation with Bob Ewell, and when the men came to hurt to Tom Robinson in his jail.
Lee and Conolly shows the audience that courage tend to come in diverge forms. One form is physical courage. In the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates courage in a physical sense as he finds himself in a face off with a loose rabid dog, only armed with a shotgun. " For God's sake, Mr. Finch, look where he is! Miss and you'll go straight into the Radley house!
In To Kill a Mockingbird, a great deal of courage is shown by Atticus throughout the story. An excerpt from the book illustrates Atticus's courage perfectly, " Lemme tell you somethin' now, Billy," a third said, "you know the court appointed him to defend this nigger." "Yeah, but Atticus aims to defend him. That's what I don't like about it" (Lee 163). Atticus again displays courage at the beginning of chapter 23, after
“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” said by Winston Churchill. I think this quote relates to Atticus because of the trial, he has to speak up for what he believes in and he also has to sit down and listen. It also relates to what Atticus tells his kids sometimes, like the time with Scout and school. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus is a wise father, a clever lawyer, and a brave man.
Atticus is courageous for defending a black man accused of rape,Tom Robinson, against a white women ,Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell’s daughter, in a predjest community and be ridiculed by people in his community, friends and family included. Atticus has the courage to stand up for what he believes in and takes ridicule from people in his community to defend Tom Robinson even when he knows he will lose the case. Atticus says to uncle Jack ”’It couldn’t be worst, Jack. The only we’ve got is a black mans words against the Ewells’. The evidence boils down the you did it-I didnt. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson's word against the Ewells…’’’. This shows Atticus is courageous because he knows people are angry and saying he is wrong and he still stands up for what he believes in and defends Tom Robinson when he knows he's losing the case in the end. Atticus is courageous for standing up for what he believes is
