Are young men and women, previously diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hypertension disorder (ADHD), being discriminated by our military, by denying them the right to serve their country? Many individuals think so, and they argue against the military’s policies which encourage such actions. While opponents may believe that individuals with ADHD do not belong in the military, other people beg to differ and believe their condition should not warrant as a dis-qualifier to serving their country. While disqualifying individuals with an ADHD diagnosis may seem justifiable, there is still a need to conduct an overhaul of the military’s policy regarding enlistment and ADHD to today’s standards.

The opposition to allow the young men and women into the military due to their previous ADHD diagnosis does have its merits, but many of these concerns boil down to the safety of our troops and the their effectiveness. For example, many of the opposition truly believe that these individuals would place their fellow soldiers at risk in dangerous situations. The concept of placing ADHD personnel in a combat role, let alone in a warzone, has many critics in a frenzy. Then there is the concern of their mental and intelligence capabilities, in which, the opposition believe would hinder the soldier’s ability to advance within the ranks, and hamper the capabilities of the unit in which the individual is assigned to.
