Question No. 1. The public service/ policy individual I interviewed is Athena Salman. Athena Salman is the Democratic nominee for State House of Representatives in Legislative District 26. She recently won the Arizona Primary back in August, beating incumbent Celeste Plumlee. Now heading towards the general election, alongside Isela Blanc, she will be facing Republican nominee Steven Adkins, and Green Party candidate Cara Trujillo. In the near future, a trio of debates between the candidates between now and election day. Athena is very proud of the fact she is a clean elections candidate, meaning she does not take any type of donation from anyone that live outside of her district. This is the first time of Athena running for AZ Representative …show more content…
She grew up in public schools and graduated from Arizona State University. She earned her degrees in both economics and political science. Every year since Athena has been around in higher education, the Arizona legislature has continued to cut spending on education, specifically higher education. This has made a huge impact on me and other peers that are low-income and first generation. Back when Athena was at Arizona State, her tuition cost was in total $4,700 for the whole academic year. When I first heard this, I was stunned by the low amount, but what is more shocking to me is that this was only five years ago in 2011. I can only imagine what the feeling of tuition being that much cheaper for an academic year. Currently, tuition is almost $6,000 just for a single semester without including fees. In five short years, just like that, the cost of tuition has nearly tripled. Sadly, the cost of tuition is expected to increase with no end in sight to lower down the cost anytime soon. The cut to education funding led Athena to take up community organizing opportunities, public policy, and lobbying elected officials. Athena made it her mission to inform elected officials the true impact of decreasing funding for education and demonstrating the importance of higher education. Along with that, Athena spent some time in the nonprofit sector to bring unity within underrepresented communities. Eventually, she felt the best way to create everlasting change is to run for office herself. So far, the move of running for office has felt right for
On 01/16/16 I contacted Iwanda Davidson at her residence at 11900 Melissa Lane. Mrs. Davidson said sometime over the past two weeks she has had several items come up missing from her residence including a black Hi-Point 9mm handgun, unknown serial number, valued at $150, a new in the box Poulan Chainsaw, unknown model or serial number, valued at $120, a new in the box Homelite weed eater, unknown model or serial number, valued at $50. Mrs. Davidson said she is missing a PorterCable tool bag which contained a battery operated drill, flashlight, circular saw and reciprocal saw, unknown serial numbers, valued at $250, a new set of sockets, wrenches and other miscellaneous hand tools, valued at $150, two new dead bolts she purchased for her front door to her residence, valued at $30 combined, and a Nokia cellular telephone blue in color with a pink and white case, valued at $30. Mrs. Davidson said that she also had several pieces of jewelry, mostly inexpensive keepsakes and costume jewelry, go missing. Mrs. Davidson said that the jewelry was a gift from her grandmother and that she could not describe any of it aside from one ring which had a dark stone possibly black or purple surrounded by several lab created white/clear gems. Mrs. Davidson said she did not know what the value of the

As I am sure you are aware, the 2014 General Elections are quickly approaching. While there are many interesting initiatives on the ballot, there is one initiative in particular that could benefit from your support, as you can from it. Proposition 2 is a bill supported by not only the Democratic and Republican caucuses, but also by countless organizations and newspapers, including the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association, California Chamber of Commerce, La Opinion, Long Beach Press Telegram and Los Angeles Times ("Save Your Votes and View Endorsements.”). In addition, some proponents of the bill are contributors to your campaign, such as the California Chamber of Commerce (We Draw the Lines, 2014).Your political
She began taking the lead on her campus by becoming a Vice President in her sorority Alpha Phi. She ventured into Student Government as a Senator and took on many roles within her two years and successfully passed a spending amendment to law with the fiscal policy in the spring of 2016.
In the following documentary, “Last Man Standing: Politics Texas Style” this film is taken place from a behind-the-scenes point of view that shows a very closely fought race in the Texas, There was an ongoing race for the House District 45. Not only did you see the ongoing race but also got to witness the governor’s race, which is Tony Sanchez against Governor Rick Perry. Also another witness Ron Kirk running for senate in Texas against John Cornyn. Overall numerous comments are proclaimed by local and nation figures in the documentary about discussion’s on politics, which really had a very intuitive background to an in depth side from running campaigns to strategies that some candidates used to attract voter to vote for them. In the documentary it primarily focused on two specific candidates running for The House District 45. First, you had Rick Green, a thirty-one year old incumbent Republican Legislator and a conservative leader that is running for reelection as House District 45. He had served two terms during the republican holder generation. Most people notice right from the beginning that he is well more experience candidate for the election, thus making people more openly trust him that he can manage the position of in which he is running for. This not only makes him more experienced through the people’s perspective but also through his campaign style and debate appearances. Another appealing interest that people see is that he is a Christian which people pick up
The Kelly Ayotte campaign was a well-run organization and played a large role in getting the New Hampshire citizens to the voting booth. I was honored to serve with such great people from who came to New Hampshire from all over the country. These people like myself, wanted to hopefully help Kelly Ayotte get re-elected to the senate. The campaign headquarters was based out of a first floor office, located in the Brady Sullivan Tower in Manchester. I was a man of many tasks, and tried to help where I was needed depending on the day. I volunteered in the office and was out in the field, knocking door to door. My job was incredibly important because going into the start of my service I knew the senate race was going to be extremely close, the closest Senate race in the country for that matter. As we observed, the race was extremely close and unfortunately my candidate lost three weeks ago. Although, it was not the outcome we were looking for, I have a couple of theories of why we may have lost by only eight hundred votes. If more un-educated voters exercised their right to vote, the outcome could have possibly been different. Whether we like it or not, most of the citizens in Manchester New Hampshire are not as well versed on public issues and candidates. However, towns including Bedford and Merrimack were very well versed. Towns including Bedford take election cycles more seriously and in my eyes seemed more educated on the issues. The experience volunteering on the Kelly
These tactics (& a multitude of other reasons) are exactly why I will NOT vote Kerri Howell. As a candidate, I experienced the same attitude from her campaign. It's hard to play by the rules, make the connections & secure a spot to advertise your candidacy when options are limited as the developer/ landowners won't allow a non-insider to advertise. Howell is part of a group that feels entitled to public office. Elected positions shouldn't be self-serving & no one has the right to any position, you serve the people & we deserve better than these childish games. This is way we need change in our political infrastructure ASAP.
Malik presented Frank and Alice who consider themselves to be Republican/ conservative. Frank is a registered republican who wishes other knew that republicans are a group that have been stereotyped to be a bunch of racist ignorant people. Feels pretty much unsafe to speak about politics in public because of the way he may be judged. Media often makes the portrayal of certain political parties which influence and make others bias instead of actually doing their research and choosing which party they connect with the most is a change he would like to see. Alice identifies as a conservative that wishes others would know that not all republicans fit the bias of the same portrayal Frank expresses. Unlike Frank, Alice does speak about politics but often gets into heated arguments because of her beliefs and political views. A change to see is to have conservatism taken more seriously instead of making it a joke in the media. Biased or not, voters should take to the books learn our history and be more aware of the candidates who wish to run our country.
America’s education system has been in a state of distress for the past decade, but garnished headlines recently as the student loan debt crisis reached over a trillion dollars. In conjunction with that, tuition is no longer the only obstacle a student faces when considering their future. As generations come and go, universities have slowly, but surely, been angling their education in a way to favor profit over knowledge. Because of the new direction higher education models are taking, Magdalena Kay questions her readers, “is there a problem with students, with teachers, with administrators, or maybe
During high school I have continuously volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Hillcrest Health Services, and Buddy Baseball. These organizations have allowed me to help others and learn more about myself through charity events. The organization I have learned the most from has been Don Bacon for Congress. Don Bacon is a former General from the Air Force and is currently running for Congress in the 2nd district in the state of Nebraska. Don Bacon has allowed me to be a key volunteer for his campaign and I have not taken this opportunity lightly. I first met Don in the summer before my senior year and he immediately took an interest in me. He then asked me to help in walk in multiple parades during the summer all across the metro area. During
Kris, a wife and a mother, worries about the increasing cost of higher education. She and her husband have a two year old daughter whom they are determined to send to college. They want their daughter to succeed in life, but they have to weigh the complications of going to college as well. “I have always thought about college as a “catch 22”...You’re taught from a young age that in order to achieve the “American Dream” you must graduate high school and go to college,” Kris contemplates (Kris 5).Throughout Kris’s ten years of experience with college, she has seen the tuition increase to shocking heights. In fact, she claims that community colleges cost as much as state colleges did when she first started her college hunt. Back then, she
Universities used to be a privilege for most academic students to attend and it was very affordable, but currently the price per year to attend college has drastically increased. For instance, in the “1970’s the average cost was 10,000 dollars a year and today the average cost is 30,000 dollars a year” (CQ Researcher). This is a triple increase in the price per year to attend college. Allowing this increase on college tuition has impacted the student’s attendance rate. This is a significant financial burden for college students and their family. Some believe that college shouldn’t be free because we are risking the value of college education, while others think it should be free because we are trying to avoid having our upcoming generation
When one reads Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s “The Interview”, it is very clear how gender roles are predominate within the family that is portrayed. Using this family as an extension to represent all of India, Jhabvala gives us some insight into the daily lives led over there. The story is told through the eyes of an upper-class man who is completely dependent upon his family, specifically his brother and the women in the house. This essay will examine the male and female roles that are presented in this short story, how they parallel each other, and the deeper meanings hidden within the text.
The words “free college tuition” spark interest in any college student with accumulating debt. In fact, this topic is so incredibly supported that Bernie Sanders implemented it as a core interest in his 2016 campaign. Once Hillary Clinton became the Democratic nominee, she decided to take it on herself with an extensive plan that guaranteed students free tuition. Unsurprisingly, free tuition resonates extremely well within the student demographic. To forty million Americans, free tuition eliminates the largest problem for students: debt (Hess, 2017). However, free college tuition generates the inverse of what these low-income and middle-income students believe. In fact, free college cripples them from multiple perspectives; students will end up spending more financially, will be less likely to graduate with a degree, and will be subjected to more inequality and less exposure.
David Leanhardt a correspondent for the New York Times stated in The College Dropout Boom that often times the thought of high tuition prices scare students away, especially lower-income students, before they even think about attending a college (92). And there is good reason for this. With the average four year degree costing $91,304 at public colleges and $179,000 at private universities (Merrow), tuition prices are ridiculously high. How are people expected to get an education with school costing so much? In the article Angela Whitiker’s Climb Isabel Wilkerson tells of Mrs. Whitiker’s near impossible climb out of poverty and into the upper-middle class. Ms. Whitaker, faced many struggles on her way up the ladder, but she worked hard, and eventually she wound up on top. Still through all of her hard work she could not have gotten to where she is now on her own. She needed someone to support her and her family emotionally, physically, and financially just for her to graduate with an Associate’s degree (202-16). It took a lot of time and effort for Mrs. Whitiker to get out of the place she was born into, and at times it looked like she would never get out, but she pushed forward, and lucked out. Most people don’t have the drive Mrs. Whitiker had, many students simply leave college when they begin to feel the pressure. In a study over college students, Merrow found that
