Over the course of my analysis I learned a great deal about this artifact using each method individually. However, I believe the biggest impact of this analysis comes from looking at the findings of the two types of criticism combined. One thing I noticed upon combining the methodologies was that the metaphor was built upon the ideologies presented. While it would be possible to examine this artifact solely using metaphorical criticism the use of ideological criticism strengthened the metaphor. Without the ideologies presented the metaphor is weak and lacks any real ties between the tenor and vehicle. This is not an accident in fact it is exactly the opposite. The metaphor in this artifact is hidden beneath the ideology because Sorkin crafted
Even though Haas and Flower do not mention George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, or even metaphors, in their article, I will be using metaphors to get a better understanding of what these reading strategies are like. Lakoff and Johnson’s analytical tools and ideas about metaphors (, seen in Metaphors We Live By, help me, and others,
My artifact is a necklace and it’s so unique and important to me because it has my name on it. And it’s so beautiful, in the middle there is my name with Arabic letters it’s so old so I don’t wear it any more but it still my favorite on of all. I allow keep it in a small box in my bed room near to me so that nobody will play or touch it. I get it when I was 11 years old from a special people in a special event. It from my family they give it to me as a present when I pass my sixth grad, I was so happy that day and until now every time I look at it I remember how hard I worked to pass that school year. It also my first necklace in my life I keep it until now because I love my family. When I feel upset or depressed I tack it out and keep
In the world of rhetoric, the artifact itself is probably the single most important piece to the puzzle when applying any kind of rhetorical critique. On top of that, the rhetorical theory you're applying and the lens in which you view this artifact, play an equally important role. They set up the foundation of criticism.
The Interact Club could organize a school supplies drive or classroom supplies drive. This drive would be organized as to where member of the Interact Club would contact local schools and be provided with a list of school supplies or basic supplies for a classroom. Members of the club would then get the word out to students organizing the delivery of the supplies and getting them back to the local schools.
In George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s book, Metaphors We Live by, they express that we tend to overlook everything and not see the true identity of objects in our everyday lives. We don’t tend to look at objects as metaphors as well. Lakoff and Johnson
Outstanding post! I am in full agreement with you! I found your interpretation of all three evaluations to be enlightening and well defined. Moreover, you have offered clear evidence of fully grasping the three types evaluations presented by Grinnell, Gabor, and Unrau (2016). Thank you for sharing your insightfulness! Calvin
The artifact I uploaded to demonstrate my proficiency in Standard 6 is my final leadership project for the Supervision of Instruction course I completed at the end of August 2015. This project required me to identify an area in which I wanted to improve my professional practices as an administrator, and then implement a plan for improvement which involved communicating with staff, tracking growth, developing action steps, and identifying potential obstacles. The area I chose to focus on was student achievement, and my goal was to increase all students’ academic growth in literacy by improving teachers’ instructional practices through professional development, feedback, and collaboration. The feedback that I received from my professor reassured
A metaphor is a comparison technique, or a mode of thought, used to compare two different topics by using the language of another. For example, one common metaphor heard in the United States when referring to the wide varieties of population is “the United States is a melting pot”, which is comparing the population of the United States to a melting pot, which has various “ingredients” that are unique as the population of the United
The artifact I uploaded to demonstrate my proficiency in Standard 4 is a budget summary I completed for EDG 541: School Business Administration in October 2015. This project required me to develop a budget presentation for my school when dealing with the issue of a 5% increase in funds but a 15% increase in the student population. As a result, I had to analyze what was necessary to support student learning, how I could reallocated funds, and where I could make budget cuts so that a balance budget was developed. The specific feedback I received to develop my understanding further was to think more creatively with staffing to help with budget constraints and alway ensure the school’s budget aligns with the school’s vision. This artifact shows
This artifact supports the standards 4.5 and 4.6. I use my progress monitoring sheets to keep accurate data on the students’ progress towards their IEP objectives. This form allows me to quickly determine the students’ percentage of accuracy for any specific trial. This progress monitoring form allows me to see the students’ progress and make adjustments to my teaching methods as needed.
One of the best decisions I made my junior year was joining Interact Club. Around Christmas time, everyone in Interact fundraises money by selling candy bars. This money goes to the Christmas clearing Council to help buy Christmas gifts for families in need at Waukesha North. We actually got to go shopping before Christmas and pick out the gifts for the families with the money we raised. This was very humbling for me because they didn't ask for much. All they really wanted was a pair of socks and a t-shirt. Nothing big, nothing fancy. The thought of people not getting gifts on Christmas really never occurred to me until then. I've been so fortunate that I have never had that situation at home, but now I realize that many others do. And that
Name: David Gandia 1-14-16 Grade When Artifact was Created: 9th Grade Artifact Name: Lemonade Spreadsheet Khan Academy Badges I chose this artifact to add to my portfolio because my Khan Academy badges show how I know how to understand the concepts of Algebra, and how to do Algebra on the internet. This artifact has many more strengths than it does weaknesses. One strength of the artifact is my badges show that I spend a lot of my extra time outside of school, going above and beyond expectations.
Lakoff and Johnson agrees when they wrote “It is far more difficult to see that there is anything hidden by the metaphor or even to see that there is a metaphor used here. This is so much the conventional way of thinking about language that it is sometimes hard to imagine that it might not really fit. ”(Lakoff and Johnson 11). Taking a deeper look at metaphors is important to understanding the complexity of the English language. The first step in analyzing a metaphor is to recognize the hard ones.
Albert Einstein once said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” This quote describes the responsibilities and standards of teaching children. I believe that teachers should be held to high standards for being the foundation of a student’s education and well-being. For my future students, my responsibilities as a future educator include supplementing the growth of a variety of students’ knowledge and creativity, abiding as a role model for students and colleagues, and understanding the issues in the foundations of education.
This artifact is a fun game I created to help my students study. It has 5 subjects and each subject has five questions, each of the questions are worth a certain amount of points. Whichever team answers the most questions right and has the highest score at the end will win something. I created this game using a PowerPoint template I got off of the internet and I came up with a handful of questions. I would use a project like this for several occaisons helping study for quizzes, tests and end of year exams. I met the above standard by evaluateing and reflecting on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student
