“Owls” by Mary Oliver is a complex and imaginative view of nature and an analysis of its beauty and, at the same time, frightening aspects through the lens of Oliver. Throughout her story, Oliver explores the paradoxical anomalies of nature: the beauty contrasted with the fear as well as the complexity contrasted with simplicity. Using sensory language, parallel structure, and alliteration, Oliver establishes her awe-struck yet cautious view of nature as a paradoxical masterpiece.

Within the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” the family goes through many hardships that can most definitely occur in our world today. One of these that have caught my attention is the children's lack of support and lack of education. Even Henrietta had a lack of support at her younger teen years. While at the 6th-grade level, she dropped out. Henrietta’s children had to go through some of their roughest times at a young age, so I believe this impacted them and affected how they are today. Since the children's father was busy working two jobs, Henrietta's son Lawrence took his mother's passing as a queue to step up and take care of his siblings. Lawrence dropped out of school and Spent his time trying his best to take care of them. Because of this, he was unable to receive a better level of education that would have been beneficial to himself and his family. As for the rest of her children, they had many issues at home that affected the way they learned. These children lived
Nanette Salomon, a very well known feminist writer, wrote the article, “Judging Artemisia: A Baroque Woman in Modern Art History.” The article opens up with a discussion about the 2001-2 exhibition of Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi: Father and Daughter Painters in Baroque Italy. The author explains that three things are unusual here: the fact that two famous artists were presented at the same time, that they were related as father and daughter, and the fact that the woman was better known than the man. Her intent in this article is to look at the effects of this trope (figure of speech) in the past and in the present.

I read the fantasy novel, Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer. It is a 316 page book with a lexile of 600, published March of 2003. I originally was going to read “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard, but my friend had highly suggested me to read Artemis Fowl, so I read it. But what made me really want to read it was the other version of the covers, which showed a boy who looked very evil and intelligent, and the color scheme of the cover was very appealing to me. Though I did want to read Artemis Fowl, I’m wasn’t really into fantasy at the time, I didn’t even know what the story was about so the genre was not something I was focusing on. I do have a pretty good idea about fantasy through reading many books summaries. Fairies, magic, mythical creatures

If I were to stranded on a island with any character from the book, Artemis Fowl, it would have to be Butler. Butler would be my choice because he is very knowledgeable in survival skills. In the book, it mentioned that, “At the age of ten, Butler children were sent to a private training center in Israel, where they were taught the specialized skills necessary to guard the latest in the Fowl line.” Which might conclude that they are trained physically and mentally to survive in any type of situation. Besides having survival skills, Butler would also be a good protector/bodyguard. If any tropical animals were to attack us, he would probably be able to fight it off since he is a very gargantuan person.
Louisa May Alcott portrays aspects of her life within her pieces of work, as well as impacting advances within society. Two major pieces of her work are Hospital Sketches and her novel Little Women. Hospital Sketches is slightly fictionalized but is almost entirely based upon Alcott’s experiences as a Civil War nurse. Her encounters as a nurse gave people a true depiction of the wounded soldiers. Her novel Little Women is based on her life, taking inspiration for her writing from her childhood memories. Little Women is also seen as an empowering piece of writing. It encourages women and girls to have a voice.
It is known that women have often received the short end of the stick throughout history. Women were seen as lesser beings compared to their male counterparts. Religion played a large role within the lives of these generations that faced female oppression. Some painted women to be the cause of vile things, such as war and disease. Others constructed the image of a female who was powerful and the epitome of beauty. Why is it that women haven’t yet applied that they are a strong and independent? That they, themselves, are in fact, goddesses in their own right? The OED ‘goddess’ helps us understand that a goddess is any woman who is beautiful, empowered, and in touch with nature.
Annie Finch, a well-known poet of the Contemporary Period, plays a big role in American literature. Her use of free-verse poetry gives the readers an example of the transition between traditional and free-verse styles, which drastically changed throughout the mid-19th century. For instance in her poem titled “In Cities, Be Alert”, we see the use of the realism that was accurately shown back in the 80’s and the use of free-verse is projected for us as we read through the poem. Annie Finch still stands as one of the many great poets/critics in American and World Literature.
The short story "The Birds" was written by Daphne du Maurrier and was filmed and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It has a very interesting and suspenseful plot. The short story was well written and the film was well played, both are very similar. Although, they have a few differences the film and short story have the same mood and theme. Would the differences in the film and the short story affect the suspenseful and frightening plot?Alfred Hitchcock did an outstanding job filming the movie matching it with the short story. In both the short story and film flocks and flocks of gulls, robins, and sparrows join each other.
