My senior project is going to be on art therapy and how art can be calming. Art therapy is a type of expression therapy in the mental health profession. Expressive therapists use art and the creative process to explore emotional conflicts within a person. Art therapy is commonly performed in mental health, rehabilitation, medical, educational, forensic, wellness, private practice and community settings with diverse client populations in individual, couples, family, and group therapy formats (American Art Therapy Association 1) The focus of my research paper is how art therapy can be helpful and why it will be. I believe it will be helpful to people with low self esteem, anxiety and depression. When a person has depression they are usually told to start a journal on how they’re feeling. Journaling is a type of expressive therapy, but it doesn’t always work for creative minds. Although, journalling is a type of creative therapy some people have a hard time showing how they feel with just a pen and paper. However, in art therapy you can use different colors to express how you’re feeling and various art …show more content…
According to American Art Therapy Association usually the ones who benefit from art therapy include those who have experienced trauma from combat, abuse, and natural disaster; People with different physical health conditions such as cancer, traumatic brain injury, and other health disability benefit greatly from art therapy. Also people with autism, dementia, depression, and mental disorders benefit from art therapy. People with mental disorders have a harder time expressing how they are feeling, in result they use art therapy to express what they are thinking or feeling. Art therapy helps people resolve conflicts, improve personal skills, are more able to manage problematic behaviors, reduce negative stress, and achieve personal insight. Art therapy also provides an opportunity to enjoy making art and developing a new
There were many things that led Rome to it’s fate and decline. Rome used to be a large empire that was in Europe, Asia, and Africa. It was at its highest in 117 CE, it was the strongest empire in the world at the time. But just a few hundred years later it no longer was existed . A few reasons the Roman empire collapsed are that they got too big to supply, the military was switching sides in war, and several different groups were attacking them over 400 years.
The other disability I am going to shed light on is that of autism. What both of this disabilities have in common is the lack of communication skills developed, in terms of the written sense for a dyslexic and in the speech and language sense for an autistic child (youtube). This is where art can be used as a successful tool in helping them to create better self esteem and confidence. Autistic children along with having speech difficulty, can also have signs of repetitive compulsive behaviour, struggle with social situations, and trouble processing sensory information (such as hypersensitivity to sounds or touch (The value of art therapy for those on the autism spectrum, 2017, para. 1.)) Like dyslexic’s, autistic children are also visual learners, they like to think in pictures (The value of art therapy for those on the autism spectrum, 2017, para. 3.) With the daily struggles of trying to communicate their ideas though the written word or speech, having the ability to use imagery to show how they are feeling or the ideas they are trying to convey can be a release for a child (The value of art therapy for those on the autism spectrum, 2017, para. 4.) Along with the ability to find the arts as a communication mechanism, it can also be effective for helping the child to deal with social interactions with their peers in the classroom setting (The value of art therapy for those on the autism spectrum, 2017, para. 6.)These children with differences can learn so much from their peers, and putting them in a comfortable setting such as an imaged based activity in small groups can really help with an autistic child's ability to learn cooperation, turn-taking, and the concept of respecting differences.
The person can look at the art in see the meaning, confusion and sludge they are going through. In the study she focuses on is over a six week period with a hospitalized girl who had been sexually abused. This child had been having problems with aggression. A approved by her art therapy was something the children would look forward to and run into the room with excitement.
According to an article published in Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art therapy Association, “…art therapy strengthened personal, spiritual and social development” (pg. 72, Kapitan, Litell, Torres, 2011). Additionally, it could also help children reduce “acute stress symptom” (pg. 103, Chapman, Morabito, Ladakakos, Schreier, Knudson, 2001). This type of therapy can be used to build child’s self-esteem by encouraging them to express themselves openly through art.
I was so impressed that well performed art therapist with good counseling skills during the processing of art therapy, the people improved their emotional, behaviors and self-esteem after taking art therapy. I found that my creativity and skills could be used in a more rewarding way to contribute to the community. These experience inspired my decision to pursue my further study in Counseling, and hopefully to become a professional counselor one day in the future.
Art Therapy is a technique for demonstrating to oneself that they can open up through art, which permits them to convey what needs be in an unexpected way. Like the case example of Bridget in the article, “Art Therapy: A Proposal for Inclusion in School Settings” where she was assessed by the school art therapist, Marie learned to also use art to process her inner physical and emotional pain in an environment where she felt safe. Since the beginning of Marie’s assessment and interaction with the art therapist she began showing baby steps and signs of progress. With that being said, Marie’s trauma was so severe and had been going on for years, therefore it became clear that her need for continued art therapy was necessary and
The article “Art Therapy: Creativity That Heals” was written by Sherly Devore about the combination of the creative arts and psychology. Devore asks the readers to remember a time when they were feeling down and depressed and participated in a creative art activity and their mood completely shifted(“Art Therapy: Creativity that Heals,” 1989). She states that “Creative arts is playing a direct and important role in helping persons of all ages who have mental and physical disabilities (“Art Therapy: Creativity that Heals,” 1989, para. 1). The Victorian government (Australia) announced on Friday it will be getting rid of ‘Religious instructions’ in its public schools and replacing them with courses that educate students on ‘building respectful relationships.’
Art-based interventions use the creative process to help clients communicate and understand their thoughts and feelings (Case & Dalley, 1992). There are a variety of approaches one can take when using art in interventions, as it is a versatile technique. It can be combined with other forms of therapy, such as rational emotive behaviour therapy (Roghanchi et al., 2014) mindfulness training (Coholic, 2011
Art as a therapeutic method was my primary focus throughout the psychology program at Ryerson University. I am familiar with much research regarding art therapy for mental disorders such as depression
Expressive arts therapy is the use of art modalities, creative process, and aesthetic experience in a therapeutic context. It is a therapy of the imagination (McNiff, 1992). Effective communication is an essential element in therapeutic relationships and, although verbal language is the most conventional means of conveying information, other forms can convey just as much as words. The arts are an alternative form of communication that has recently received recognition for their value in therapeutic settings. There is a long well-established connection between the arts and psychology. Expressive arts therapy builds on a natural, complimentary relationship between the two disciplines. As a formal therapy, this form is relatively new with its
Almost every theoretical orientation has adapted the use and techniques of expressive arts therapy in some way. Humanistic psychology, for example, emphasizes the importance of play, creativity, and spontaneity. The creative process is intrinsic to self-actualization. Self-actualization makes life more meaningful and enhances abilities,
