Though the start of the modernisation may trace back to the beginning of Industrial Revolution. “Modernism in the design world did not exist in a fully developed form, until well after First World War.” (Wilk, 2006) Causing the great loss of lives and other countless damage to the world, it reshaped many people’s way of thinking the world. With the inspiration of early avant-garde movement, the modernism began to emerge advocating an utopian future and shared certain core principles by various styles of modernists: rejecting the past and applied ornament; forms follow function, a preference for
Gropius, inspired from the constitutive beliefs of the arts and craft movement, had a utopian dream to combine art, design and the industry of architecture in ideal unity. Hence the Bauhaus movement was founded on collaboration of all different art forms. Instructors such as Paul Klee, Josef Albers, Wassily Kandinsky and László Moholy-Nagy each specialized in their own field of designs and craftsmanship. With these artists shaping the Bauhaus movement, the style and the elements that came along with it are immortalized even today. Walter Gropius’ form-follows-function philosophy still influences every aspect of art including advertising, typography, architecture, and people’s living spaces. The Bauhaus expressed an
Meaningful appropriation remains a vital precept of creativity and innovation. In the last 20 years, many artists have constructed knowledge in forms of contemporary art from both social and cultural sources. Artists have continuously remixed contents from certain cultures for new expressive purposes. It is often deemed by members of the originating cultures, that appropriation in the arts is disrespectful, as cultural elements become distorted and lost in translation. Meaningful appropriation however is often misunderstood and is mainly viewed as borrowing that is in some way inappropriate, unauthorised or undesirable. Although, artists in remix culture have not necessarily attempted to destroy cultures, but instead offer a new perspective to individuals by bringing divergent cultures together through art. Artists such as Stella McCartney, a designer famously known for her creation ‘Chinatown Plaid, 2013’ in fashion, utilises dominant creative strategies such as remixing and collaging of fabrics in order to convey her artistic vision, which highly compliments both the ‘Refugee’ work culture and female individuals as strong and resilient. In a similar sense, digital artist Michael Guppy remixes artworks using programs such as Adobe Photoshop in order to remove central elements from famous artworks, a reoccurring theme in his work in which he explores both the social and cultural side of technology and how it transforms society. Whereas, graphic designer Thomas Robson
The engulfing size of the painting (250.5 x 159.5 cm) drives the audiences mind into a hypnotic frenzy as they are overwhelmed by bright and sensual colours, which, have the ability to evoke deep emotions and realisations. Kandinsky has portrayed this through the disorientation of his own personal visions of society during the industrial revolution. The rough yet expressive outline of buildings, a rainbow and the sun gives reference to realism as it allows viewers to connect and understand underlying motifs and shapes yet is painted abstractly to move away from the oppressive and consumerist society. Thus, Kandinsky breaks boundaries through his innovative approach to his art-making practise concluded from his personal belief of ‘art for arts sake’. He believed that art should mainly convey the artist’s personal views and self-expressionism that translated a constant individuality throughout his work from an inner intentional emotive drive. This broke traditional boundaries as art in the renaissance period was meant to be a ‘narration’ or an artwork where an audience could learn and benefit from. This is evidently shown in Composition IV as it exemplifies Kandinsky’s inner feelings towards the industrialised society

Graphic design started many years ago. Over time, graphic design skills changed, as well as the implementation of ideas. Different designers from around the world practiced design, and each one had their own way. Designers’ experiences helped them to do more modern work. Some of them brought new ideas to graphic design and developed it. There are many professional designers, but Herb Lubalin and Alexey Brodovitch deserve to be known in the history. They bring creative and modern ideas to the art deco movement.
Phones are the easiest and most common way to get connected. Through his art, Pawel Kuczynski is warning the audience of problems that phones cause among people. The artist has created many paintings to convey the idea of technology causing people to become separated and disconnected from one another. Kuczynski’s art could be seen as a metaphor for young people, being connected through technology but still isolated in loneliness. Phones are most likely the most commonly used source of communication in the world; which begs the question of how they could possibly be disconnecting people. The title alone, Islands, suggests to the audience a sense of distance and isolation. That is also conveyed in the painting itself with the use of perspective

The beginning of 20th century was a time of drastic change. New developments were made in the arenas of the classical sciences, social science, psychology and philosophy - each challenging traditional thought. Industrialization and the introduction of many new, challenging concepts in the fields of politics as well as the development of new technologies gave artist more freedom to innovate and break the rules of traditional art. By using new materials, techniques and the new approach artists were pushing boundaries of what has previously been accepted art practice in order to invent radically new styles.
Architecture had a great influence on graphic design from the 1900's to 1950's. Many art movements and artists influenced Graphic Design. Peter Behrens, El Lissitesky, Bauhaus, and Futurism all greatly impacted the Graphic Design concepts of today. Design was blended with architecture, especially in the Bauhaus school in Germany.
The transition between the 19th and 20th century has brought further development of modernistic ideas, concepts and techniques in art. Inspired by Cezanne’s idea, saying that all nature objects can be illustrated with just three geometrical figures: cube, sphere and cone, Pablo Picasso created his first paintings, which became the icons of modern art and cubism movement in
Madness is a common theme in many works of literature from the Elizabethan era. It is often confused with the work of the devil or love sickness. Due to the combination of widely accepted religious beliefs and the lack of understanding of mental illness, Hamlet’s madness is a defining factor in the storyline of William Shakespeare’s renowned play Hamlet. The theme of madness is first introduced in Act I. Early on in the play, the tragic nature of Hamlet’s character becomes more and more apparent. This is first presented in one of Hamlet’s soliloquys in scene 2, “O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt,/ Thaw and resolve itself into a dew,/ Or that the/ Everlasting had not fixed/
The Bauhaus school was founded in 1919 in Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius (1883 - 1969). In 1923, Walter Gropius introduced the agreement between “creative artists and the industrial world”. The Bauhaus is most famous for the idea of combining forms and functions. They combined both fine arts and design elements to create a curriculum that trained artists and designers to be capable of producing both functional and aesthetic work. One of the main goals was to bring design and technology together. During the Bauhaus period, Fine art and craft were combined together and aimed toward problem solving for an innovative, modern and industrial society. Nowadays, the Bauhaus legacy continues in modern designs, such as minimalism, or design brands like IKEA. In this essay, I will analyze Bauhaus’s influence on modern design, including architecture and furniture design by exploring different examples from different periods of time.
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-born artist, whose contributions to the world of modern art are innumerable. On an artistic level, Kandinsky's maturation process from representational art to abstract art is fascinating. From his earliest work, with an impressionistic flair, to his later work, which was pure abstraction, Kandinsky was an innovator and a genius. He bridged the gap between reality painting of earlier decades and the fantasy pastime of the twentieth century.
