Cosmetic animal testing is NOT a thing of the past and many big branded companies are still testing their products on animals. As Elle Woods once said, “I’m here to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves”.

#BeCrueltyFree Australia is a campaign in partnership between Humane Research Australia and Humane Society International. They are commanding that the Australian government joins the 30+ countries to say no to animal testing. (Tweet)

The Europe Union, Norway, Israel and India are all cruelty free countries whilst The United States, New Zealand and Australia are still fighting. Animal testing isn’t just putting lipstick on a pig, it is continuously injecting chemicals into them until they die. Here are the facts:

Dermal penetration is a testing method used on rats. It is done to analysis the penetration of a chemical into the bloodstream and to have a better understanding of skin absorption.

These companies use alternative testing methods such as ‘in vitro screens’, which is used to test the potential risks of high sensitivity and specificity to humans. They can also create their products by choosing from a list of 5000 safe ingredients that have already been tested with modern technology, therefore there is no need for animal testing.

Lush, a fresh handmade cosmetic store in Australia believes “in buying ingredients only from companies that do not commission tests on animals and in testing our products on humans.” Lush UK composed a ‘Fighting Animal Testing Campaign’ in 2012 to bring animal testing back into the public eye in the most dramatic way possible. How can you help? There are many ways and many organisations that promote cruelty free campaigns. You can act by:

Using cosmetic products that do not test on animals (obviously). This will ensure that brands that support animal cruelty do not gain any extra funding and in future will change their actions. If you are unsure if the brand tests on animals, contact them and ask if their products/ingredients are tested on animals and if they use newly developed
