Did you know that staying active can not only make you stronger and build endurance, but can also help with something completely different like improving overall health or preventing 13 different types of cancer? I’ll bet you didn’t know that! However, while there are benefits in youth sports, there are also risks in them. The risks come in a wide variety of sports ranging from football to hockey. Do you think that youth sports should stay around? Well, in my opinion, they should. I think you will agree with me after you read my arguments.
My first reason is that school/youth sports keep kids healthy. In fact, “High school athletes are more likely than non-athletes to attend college and get degrees; team captains, MVPs achieve in school at even higher rates (US Dept. of Education, 2005). “The benefits extend to the workplace. A survey of 400 female corporate executives found 94% played a sport and that 61% say that has contributed to their career success (EY Women Athletes Business Network/espnW, 2014).” I think this positive emotional effect seems like a good reason to keep youth sports, especially when there are so many bad things going on in the world. Everyone knows academics are the main point of school, but athletics have begun to take over and draw away from that focus. Many individuals believe school sports are more important than ever; however, cost is excessive and players often think about upcoming games or matches, detracting attention from homework. Therefore, districts should eliminate after-school sports because they cost tremendous amounts of money, cause academic failure, and are a major distraction.

Some schools don't just allow you to play either, you have to pass with either and A or B in all your classes or you are benched the game. You may even get a punishment from a low grade. One reason we should keep school sports is because it benefits the mind and body. For example, in part two of the article, “No! After school many kids go straight home to their phones; however, with sports, after school they go straight into a fun, healthy activity that benefits the mind and body.
Are sports beneficial or detrimental to youth? Why and how? When and where? A lot of questions have been asked either by parents or by other people who are doing this type of research. Although the physical exercise provided by sports is essential, there are many other benefits both immediate and long-term. Some state that it gives children an opportunity to play Sports and interact with other children and form social bonds and relationships but along with that it is beneficial but from the research I looked at and my own opinion, I feel that most children drop out or do not play because of lack of interest or other reasons.
High School sports are a major part of the American society with over 5 million adolescents participating in sports every year. In the news broadcast “Kids and Sports” by CBS News it tells you that youth sports can greatly benefit a child in many different ways. Youth sports are helpful because they help develop character and confidence, keeps children healthy, and has positive effects on adolescents academics.
Sports can be viewed as a learning environment that helps individuals learn life lessons, foster strong work habits and develop core values all the while learning a sport skill. Youth sports that truly benefit young athletes should be structured to emphasize participation more than just competition. Children enjoy a sport more when they are able to have fun (Humpries). Despite many excesses some sport programs still manage to promote important virtues like self- confidence, teamwork, personal responsibility, coping skills, and persistence. Through sports kids can learn to stay organized and learn how to prioritize (Ferguson). Sports enables development of physical skills and increasing proficiency makes kids feel good about themselves. It teaches kids that failure is something to overcome and and not to fear (Meyerhoff 8-9). Youth sports has many aspects that are truly benefiting for children, but these benefits are slowly being clouded by the negatives that are prominent in today's youth sports.
First of all sports keep our youth out of trouble. “Sports lead to less smoking, drug use, pregnancy, and risky sex”(“Active Kids Do”). Sports lead to less of all these things because most high school sports have a two hour practice 4 - 5 times a week plus a game so, in doing that it gives less time for our youth to be caught up in illegal activities. Also kids will have to feel the rave of the coach if they get in trouble because that usually means they can’t play a game and the whole team is depending on them. All in all sports help kids stay out of trouble.
Over 40 million kids in America play competitive sports today. It is almost impossible to imagine a childhood with no basketball, baseball, or softball. Competitive sports have become a part of our culture. However, recent concerns about concussions and placing too much pressure on children has lead to a decline in sports activity. Obviously, this sparks the question: should we still continue to hold youth sports at all? The benefits of more fit and ready people in society clearly outweigh the concerns of injury, which are currently being remedied. Therefore, not only should we continue to have competitive sports, but we should, as a society, place more value on it.

When I first heard about the argument essay I thought that it was very intriguing. Taking a firm stand on an issue and defending it, while at the same time anticipating what other people would say. Debating both sides of a topic, while trying to influence people one way. This sounded very interesting and I could not wait until I found the perfect topic, but what could it be? It had to be something that I was truly passionate about. Something that could not only be easily argued in one direction, but followed up with legitimate opposing views.
