Argumentative Essay: Should Youth Sports Stay Around?

Did you know that staying active can not only make you stronger and build endurance, but can also help with something completely different like improving overall health or preventing 13 different types of cancer? I’ll bet you didn’t know that! However, while there are benefits in youth sports, there are also risks in them. The risks come in a wide variety of sports ranging from football to hockey. Do you think that youth sports should stay around? Well, in my opinion, they should. I think you will agree with me after you read my arguments.

My first reason is that school/youth sports keep kids healthy. Kids who are active in youth sports have a lowered risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer, depression and diabetes. ”Fitness can be a way to help prevent 13 different types of cancer.” Additionally, “regular physical activity benefits health in many ways, including helping build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints,” said Facts: Sports Activity and Children. “A study shows that people who exercise say that they that it has an emotional effect on them.” Also, it “can positively affect aspects of personal development among young people” said Facts: Sports Activity and Children. In fact, “High school athletes are more likely than non-athletes to attend college and get degrees; team captains, MVPs achieve in school at even higher rates (US Dept. of Education, 2005). “The benefits extend to the workplace. A survey of 400 female corporate executives found 94% played a sport and that 61% say that has contributed to their career success (EY Women Athletes Business Network/espnW, 2014).” I think this positive emotional effect seems like a good reason to keep youth sports, especially when there are so many bad things going on in the world.
