As the world progresses, so does gender equality. There has been a debate for a long time about whether women should be getting paid the same wage as men if they have the same job and same credentials. All men and women are to be looked at as equal, whether it be in the workforce, at home, or hourly or salary pay. Men should have higher pay because men are supposed to provide for their family and they need the hours. Women have always been known to stay at home and do the “stay-at-home” jobs, but as time progresses they have had a stronger influence in the world as they are doing more jobs that are “fit” for men. Although gender equality has played a big role in society, it usually seems to go unnoticed. There was a time in history when women weren’t allowed to have jobs so they were expected to be housewives and not work. According to Gender Differences in Wages written by Audrey Light and Manuelita Ureta “The labor force participation rate of …show more content…
“The proportion of Americans who work long hours has increased substantially over the past 30 years. In the early 1980s, fewer than 9 percent of workers worked more than 50 hours per week. 13 percent were men and 3 percent were women. By 2000, over 14 percent of workers worked more than 50 hours per week (19 percent of men and 7 percent of women)” (Weeden 458). This means that over time, even though women have found a place in the work force the men have still worked more hours over time and even increased the percent of men that worked more than 50 hours a week or more. This gives a reason why men get more money or salary over time because men just work more hours. Another factor could be the difference of part time and or full time workers because there is a difference in the hours and distribution of work depending on if you work full time or part
Since the late 19th century, women have been struggling with the issue of not receiving the same amount of pay as men. The gender wage gap was not seen as a major issue until the 1960s, however, and unfortunately, it is still a major issue in our world today. (cite source). In the early 1900’s, World War I caused many men to leave their families behind to fight for their country. As a result of this, women had to take the responsibility of the male roles in the workforce. Women were expected to do the same jobs as men did before they were deployed, but were paid less to do so (cite source). This problem still exists in our world today. In 2011, it was proven that the weekly earnings for a female full-time worker is $684, compared
In our constitution we are all equal, but why are we not paid equally? The gender wage gap movement will result in social change because it is bringing awareness to women in the workplace getting paid lower than her male counterpart. On the other hand, many other people may argue that the gap is not because of gender, it is because men work longer hours compared to women since they have children to take care of. I believe that this movement could improve by making people more aware of the through more examples such as the Women’s U.S.A. Soccer Team wanting more pay and equal pay.
Gender equality is something that has been a problem through the ages. Susan B. Anthony and many others fought for the right to vote which was granted in 1920. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act into law stating that no employer can discriminate based on gender. The American Association of University Women published a graph on Women’s Median Annual Earnings as a Percentage of Men’s Median Annual Earnings for Full-time, Year-round Workers, 1974-2014 and it shows that in 1974, women were paid 59% of what men were paid. The graph shows the improvements over the years and that in 2014, women were paid 79% of what men were paid. The gap has not budged since 2014. The gender pay gap has improved over the years, but it will not close until new legislation passes.
Many people in our society today tend to think the pay gap is much better than before. That is true, however it can still be better. Compare the white race’s dollar to the Latinos, or the African Americans, or maybe to the American Indians. You will see that the white male makes way more than compared to any other male or female that I mentioned above. In this essay, I will give you facts and statistics on the white man’s dollar compared to how much women earn, and how it varies by race.
It is very hard to imagine individuals performing the same job and the rate of pay not being equal due to the gender of the worker. This occurs too often in our society and is unjust and unfair. Women often characterized as homemakers have not been paid at the same rate as men when they enter the workforce. Even when women work jobs which require more worker than men, they have a lower pay rate. Female employees are still suffering from salary inequality.
Growing up, women are told that they are equals with men but when find a job in their respective careers they are compensated for the same work very differently. When you hear about this issue most people think about the United States but this problem impacts women all over. Girls that are born in the middle east, aren’t even allowed to go to school. They are denied the opportunity for even a chance at education. In the modern world I find it ridiculous that we have to fight for something so simple as an unbiased opportunity for hourly wage compensation. The business world is for sure changing at this moment in time with the election of our new president. We must stand up now and make sure that we move forward instead of reverting backwards for women’s equality. In order for not only America but the whole world to open their eyes and see how the gender wage gap is such a prevalent issue in the business world we must look at the past see the injustice of inequality, the inability for women in current day to promote themselves, and how this wage gap is stalling the potential of the global economy.
The gender wage gap is where men get paid more than women for doing the same job. The gender wage gap has been around since 1960, when women began working full time jobs outside the home. When the wage gap between women and men first became apparent, the issue primarily centered around discrimination against women as the “weaker sex”, a social stereotype. Today the issue has become more complex, involving American cultural norms and politics, and concerns that there are glass ceilings within businesses for women. As a result, many people are indecisive when it comes to taking a position on the matter while others are adamantly entrenched in their mind set. The fact of the matter is that women’s wages should match men’s wages whenever performance of duty is equal. The issue is that there should be equal pay for equal work. Wages should be based on education, experience, exposure, and location in that career field.
The 1963 report of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women states: “The difference in occupational distribution of men and women is largely responsible for the fact that in 1961, the earnings of women working full time averaged only about 60 percent of those of men working full time.”
The gendered wage gap has been a controversial topic that's been around since women started working at jobs for money in the United States during the 1900’s era. With a steadily increasing amount of women working at jobs, came steadily strong opinions about women’s work rights. Women had been given a lesser wage compared to their male counterparts and it outraged women. However, as women were treated more and more equal, their wages were treated more equally as well. Then came a stand still in this improving equality for women in the 21st century, as it has been debated that women are now treated equally, compared to men. This standstill has caused even further debate ranging from several things with most focusing on
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, men work an average of 3.5 more hours a week than women (Lips). Overall, men definitely have higher salaries. However, it is not because of a gender pay gap. Men are disproportionally represented in higher wage jobs which skews the
In 2015, the Women’s National Soccer Team won the World Cup. In 2016, the Women’s National Soccer Team made it to the Olympics. The New York Times showed that in the past four years, the Women’s National Soccer Team had 88 wins while the men had 44. Despite their advance in victories, the women are still getting paid much less that the men. Would you want to be paid less than someone else that is doing less work than you? In the National Soccer league, women should be paid at least the equal amount as men do because the NWSL has more hard working and determined players than the men.
Men work more paid overtime than women. According to the Bureau of labor statistics, “men on average work up 52 minutes of overtime more than the average woman on week days”. This results in men to technically make more for the same job. Also according to Bureau of labor statistics, “On a weekend day men work 6.1 hours to a woman’s 5.2”. This also results in more of a gap between men and women actually showing that men on average work more paid
Women’s image is changing from homemaker to wage worker, but now they face the gender wage gap. Women are being viewed less as the homemaker and more as wage workers. The only problem with this is that women are not being paid as much as men for identical positions.
It seems that women workers have reached a plateau in society. In order for women to be respected (as men are) in the workplace there needs to be a redistribution of domestic and family work. It’s acceptable now for women to work; but this acceptance into the workforce has not drastically changed what they, women, are expected to perform at home. There is no way for women to move forward to equality in pay if they are not recognized as contributers to their job (i.e. women are still expected to perform outside of work in the family setting as well in a way that men are only expected to perform at work and not at home).
Women still get treated like they are less superior then men. Women should be treated equal to men. Women work as hard as men and should get paid as much. There was a dispute in 2006 that Lilly Ledbetter brought up about the wage gap. She was getting paid less then the men that she worked with. She lost against the Supreme Court but in 2009 congress passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009. It gives women more leeway to fight discriminatory pay. Women will always continue to have equality and discrimination issues but they will always keep fighting for their rights.
