Millions of people across the world are familiar with the concept of obesity, possibly from a personal connection or knowing someone that has been affected by it. I chose this subject because I have family members that have been directly affected by obesity, and I wanted to learn more about it and widen my perspective. Particular to the U.S., the country has had a reputation of being one of the most obese countries in the world along with Mexico and New Zealand. Obesity has the ability to affect people’s dimensions of wellness including physical and mental. Factors that can lead to obesity take on various form; some are physical such as the food itself or common social mediums such as advertisements or the media. Given, America is a melting pot of race and culture, who is to blame for the accusation? Is it a certain group or type of people? Who is the authority of what country is considered obese? And for those that claim America is obese, are they wrong or right? I wanted to begin my exploration by getting a good understanding of what obesity is. I found an article on The Obesity Society website titled “What is Obesity?” and I figured I should start there. According to the article, “obesity is defined as excess adipose [(fat)] tissue. A fat cell is an endocrine cell, and adipose tissue is an endocrine organ” (Flegal and McDowell). Adipose tissue “secretes metabolites, cytokines, lipids,” etc and causes increased levels of “fatty acids and inflammation” (Flegal and
Obesity is a complex disorder involving an excessive amount of body fat. Obesity is caused by inactivity, unhealthy diet and eating habits. When one takes in more calories than one burns through exercise or normal daily activities, your body stores the excess calories as fat. Weight gain is inevitable when diets consist of high calories and are full of processed foods and high-calorie beverages. An average American consumes
Obesity has increased in numbers rapidly over the years. It is now considered a dangerous epidemic. Variety different arguments have been considered as to why obesity has increased. Many blame it on the consumers, but can it be the fault of someone else.
As years go by American weight struggle has been getting worse. People with diabetes today has more than double since 1994. While there are ways to help bring down obesity, most companies have not taken action. There are many factors to why obesity has only been increasing all these years.
Obesity is a complex health issue to address. Obesity results from a combination of causes and contributing factors, including individual factors such as behavior and genetics. Obesity is defined simply as too much body fat. Your body is made up of water, fat, protein, carbohydrate and various vitamins and minerals. Nearly 36 % of American adults are obese. Being obese puts you at a higher risk for health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and more. Obesity is a growing epidemic in America’s society today.
Two-thirds of adults and nearly one-third of children struggle with overweight and obesity. For every five American deaths, one is associated with obesity. America causes obesity because Americans are always exposed to oversized food portions everywhere, healthy foods may be more costly than fast food restaurants, and the environment may not provide a healthy lifestyle in the area the person may live in.
if you want to stick to the obesity argument you might want to think of arguments such as 'should the government be doing more to tackle the problem or is it up to the individual?' or 'How is it people can allow themselves to get that far into bad health(obesity)?' (might be more of a Psychology question though..) A good one for looking at arguments relating to the fast food industry is 'Super-Size me' that documentary, that might give you some more ideas about arguments, to look into some of the issues that Morgan Spurlock touches on, (size of food portions, advertising, health related problems of obesity, etc..)
More than half of adults in the United States are considered to be overweight or obese. America is becoming unhealthy and it needs to change. Adults should exercise daily. Daily exercise can stimulate happiness, prevent or delay disease, and affects health positively. First, exercise causes the brain to be more alert which has a positive impact on the human body, creating a great feeling psychologically that can be associated with happiness. The world will be a happier place with happy people. Furthermore, disease is a large epidemic today, but did you know that daily exercise can help prevent or delay disease? Doctors could diagnose their patients sooner rather than later, resulting in a healthier treatment plan and then a healthier Earth. Finally, daily exercise is just an overall helpful key to good health. The less fat an adult has on his body, the healthier he could potentially be. With that being said, hours and hours of physical activity are not needed, but as little as 15 minutes a day could benefit human lifespan. Overall, adults should exercise daily because exercise stimulates happiness, can prevent or delay disease, and affects health positively.
Eating healthy and exercising often, the two things seen as key against fighting obesity. While these are very important, they are not the only tools in the fight against obesity. Before we can rely solely on eating healthy and daily exercise, we need to reform how the issue of obesity is being attacked. Childhood obesity has become an exponentially growing epidemic that has no evidence of stopping anytime soon. The government needs to step in and help with the fight because of food deserts, faulty advertising, and nutrition guidelines, which are all factors out of the public's control. Once we figure out these issues, the real fight can begin.
For the past decade and a half, the children diagnosed with obesity has tripled affecting not only the children, but also the nation’s economy, and will soon be impacting the productivity of this country. According to mayoclinic.org; childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects both children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. It is time for congress to step in and help take control of this epidemic. Childhood obesity is not a personal problem considering the future of The United States depends on whether the government decides to take authority.
Childhood obesity has now reached an epidemic in several parts of the United States. As a result, children now have a higher risk to have numerous chronic and acute medical problems. Several of the long-lasting medical problems a child might face as a result of obesity could eventually result in death. In addition to chronic medical problems, childhood obesity has severe psychosocial effects on an individual such as low self-esteem and depression. Childhood obesity is a serious problem that is caused by a numerous amount of factors that can eventually lead to severe health complications.
Two thirds of American adults are obese or overweight. Obesity is a silent killer that is taking over the United States slowly but surely. People do not typically realize how serious obesity is and it gets joked about, humiliating those who are affected. Obesity is not a joke, it is a disease that is killing everyone’s family, friends and neighbors. Obesity alone is detrimental to the health of an individual, it causes many adverse effects to the body that are often difficult to repair or cure.
The issue that I chose to research about was obesity in children and why it is becoming more relevant and time continues. I chose a recent article from San Francisco Chronicle that explains a recent survey that was conducted and what their plan is to try to fix it. In this article, a national report was done comparing children and adult body mass indexes. “The 2016 National Survey of Children's Health found that 30 percent of Wisconsin children ages 10 to 17 are overweight or obese, while the state's adult rate of obesity is 31 percent” (2017). Because of these results, health officials are very concerned and are trying to fix the problem. Because of this concern, health prfessionals are trying to teach parents to start to fix the problem from home.by having parents provide a better diet and exercise routine for their children.
Obesity is a very serious subject that a lot of people take lightly, especially us as Americans. America is the most obese country in the world. Statistics show that 300,000 people die a day in the United States of America due to obesity. This clearly shows that we have a serious problem that is massively underestimated. Obesity is also something that countries all across the world suffer from. For example, Australia is also one of the most obese countries in the world, and 50,000 people die a year from obesity in Australia. That’s 140 people who die per day in Australia. To solve the problem of obesity the prices of junk food should be raised and the prices of healthy food should be lowered and more convenient.
They consist of diseases you all know and you have probably never heard of. The two biggest diseases Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The way doctors treat one of these diseases, diabetes is with medication that causes
How many times have you seen an obese child struggling to move around at the park? Or how many times have you seen a large parent feeding their child fast food? It is curious to think what their test results look like. Being obese, today considered to be thick, is not normal. Today, 1 and 3 children and adolescents, ages 2-19, are overweight or obese-triple the rate from just one generation ago (Alliance For A Healthier Generation.) Image what the will be considered as normal weight in the future-pretty scary right? This is an important problem that needs to be addressed. In the past, this wasn't such a big issue, but as society keeps advancing, our health isn't our number one priority. This is affecting the lives of the future generations. Numerous amounts of things have increased over the years, clothing sizes, portion sizes, the amount of fast food restaurant, the price of healthy foods. All this affecting the young innocent children that live in this society. Children shouldn't have to deal with obesity just because their parents didn't know how to properly educate them from right and wrong. Of course, there is much reason that leads a child to obesity, however, it's the parent's duty to guide them in the right direction. Child obesity shouldn’t be accepted as "normal” because it’s not genetics, it is increasing and so are the diseases, and it’s affecting children's emotional well-being.
