Obesity
Obesity has been a serious problem in the United States. A lot of people think just because someone is overweight they are considered obese. This is not true, people can be overweight due to extra muscle, bones, or water. Obesity is when a person has too much fat for their poor body to carry. Unfortunately, one in every 3 adults in the America is considered to be obese. We all know obesity occurs when you start to intake too many calories for your body. Dr. Keith Alblow stated that, “The American Medical Association (AMA) has decided to classify obesity as a disease. This decision is another example of inventing illnesses - a favorite pastime of the American Psychiatric Association

In the United States, 18% of kids from age’s six to eleven are considered obese. If you were to look at the obesity rate by race, you would see that the rate for African Americans, and Hispanics are even higher. A main reason for this is because they do not balance their calories. In fact, their portion sizes are known to be three times bigger (Centers for Disease 1). Childhood obesity does not just affect the body but also the mind. This happens because obese children have a

They consist of diseases you all know and you have probably never heard of. The two biggest diseases Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The way doctors treat one of these diseases, diabetes is with medication that causes weight gain (What are the Health Risk 1). Doing this would not help obesity out because it would increase the amount of fat on your body. Until just recently heart disease and obesity were viewed as indirect. They are related because obesity is when your body mass index is too high for your body and risk for heart disease is higher when your body mass index reaches this number. The recommended body mass index is the same for both men and women. For the health range you want to range between 18.5 and 25 (What are the Health Risk 1). Some body mass index test are not as reliable as others. If you were to find one on the internet and are a pretty muscular person it probably would not tell you your actual body mass index because through the computer they cannot measure the amount of muscle your body has. To find out your body mass index for someone like this you would be better off getting tested by a doctor to see your actual one. The list of cancers connected to obesity is long, this includes cancer of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate, as well as multiple myeloma and Hodgkin’s lymphoma (What are the Health Risk 1). We all know
Obesity has played a major role in media over the last decade. With growing concern over the issue, a controversy over whether obesity is a disease itself or not has developed. Obesity, by definition, is a condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body, usually indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater. According to the currently accepted definition of disease, a condition of the body or one of its parts that impairs normal functioning and is typically manifested by distinguishing signs and symptoms, it can be concluded that obesity does not meet the criteria to be classified as a disease.
When tourist come to America they see the bigger food portions on our plates than what they would see in other countries throughout the world. In the U.S. obesity is a one of the major problems we have because people are free to buy and eat what they want without anyone to tell them differently. The cost of healthier foods are also more expensive than buying fast food or anything else that’s not healthy. As the obesity issue becomes a bigger problem new problems start to rise. For example health issues are increasing for the obese.
In order to identify a condition as a disease, it should fit certain criteria. One of the reasons that obesity is classified as a disease is because of its large comorbidity. Obesity is a risk factor for chronic diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidaemia, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnoea, musculoskeletal disorders and some cancers (Rossner, 2002). According to Rossner (2002), the death rate from all causes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and other diseases increases among moderate and severe overweight men and women in all age groups. Therefore, obesity is

Obesity has increased in numbers rapidly over the years. It is now considered a dangerous epidemic. Variety different arguments have been considered as to why obesity has increased. Many blame it on the consumers, but can it be the fault of someone else.
It is no secret that the average weight of a person has gone up significantly throughout the last decade or so. While people are becoming more and more overweight, they get closer to being categorized as obese. Obesity is a condition in which the body becomes grossly fat or overweight. It is not the same as simply being overweight, which may just be caused by extra muscle, bone, or water, along with having too much fat. If a person’s body weight is 20% higher than what it should be, then he or she is considered to be obese. If the body mass index, a statistical measurement derived from height and weight, is between 25 and 29.9, a person is considered overweight. If the BMI is 30 or over, one is considered to be obese. Someone who is
For centuries obesity has been a problem among the people of these earth. During these last few years it has rapidly grown all around the world. Obesity has become a very big problem for all sexes and ages. And it has put The United States has been second in the list of countries of most obese people in the country. Obesity is a disease because it meets all the criteria and steps needed to be a disease. Being an obese person impairs you like any other disease. The United States is the second most obese industrialized country in the world. The first one being mexico but not by much.“It decreases life expectancy and impairs the normal functioning of the body; and it can be caused
People can suffer from other diseases that cause visible weight gain. After reviewing a patient’s experience of having thyroid cancer and beating it, there was clearly a change within her physical appearance. The thyroid gland controls specific hormones within the body and has partial control in weight, heart rate, and body temperature.(Thyroid cancer information) After an extended period of time, the patient was experiencing pain in her throat and could not swallow food properly. She went to the doctor only to find out she had cancer and must have surgery. She underwent surgery and came out just fine. After a while, it was clearly visible that she had lost a bit of weight, especially in her neck. There are

It’s no secret that obesity is a huge issue worldwide; over three hundred million people are clinically obese on the earth. No matter where you go there is bound to be an overweight population; over 30% of New Zealand’s population is obese. In fact, there is an average of above 14% of people that are obese in each country. Fatty and unhealthy foods that are harmful to the human body are served everywhere you go; you just can’t get away from them. Even though obesity can lead to many fatal diseases, it is not a disease by itself. It can harm the body and reduce normal body function, but it can be cured and someone can return to a healthy lifestyle if they have enough determination.
if you want to stick to the obesity argument you might want to think of arguments such as 'should the government be doing more to tackle the problem or is it up to the individual?' or 'How is it people can allow themselves to get that far into bad health(obesity)?' (might be more of a Psychology question though..) A good one for looking at arguments relating to the fast food industry is 'Super-Size me' that documentary, that might give you some more ideas about arguments, to look into some of the issues that Morgan Spurlock touches on, (size of food portions, advertising, health related problems of obesity, etc..)
Childhood obesity has increased dramatically in the past few years. It is a result of an imbalance between how much a child eats and how much a child keeps their body active to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Common factors that are influencing childhood obesity would be the lack of self-control, environmental, and genetics. In order to combat these rising numbers of childhood obesity, people as a collective force must target problem areas within homes, schools, and their surrounding community by educating each other.
The epidemic of obesity has been a major problem in the United States and around the world since around the late 20th century. The United States ranks among the top most obese countries on the planet at around 35% of the population (Adult Obesity Facts). Recently, the American Medical Association (AMA) has officially recognized obesity as a disease (Fitzgerald). This decision in turn has caused a large amount of controversy and debate among professionals from different fields as to whether obesity should be considered a disease or not. Should obesity be considered a disease? Or should it be defined as strictly being a lifestyle choice? The proponents of labeling obesity a disease state various advantages in doing so. However, at the same time,
The fight against obesity has been increasingly tough as of lately. In most aspects, it might even seem like the United States is losing the battle. Greatly impacting the outcome of the battle are factors like chain restaurants, corner stores, supermarkets, farmers markets, as well as mobile vendors. Recognizing how a community's food environment influences its public health is vital in assuring healthy growth. Cities and counties around the country have sought to encourage and monitor the quality and quantity and to promote healthier options of what people eat in their communities, by implementing various regulations and incentives. There is a range of recommended policy options for increasing access to healthy foods and decreasing the predominance
As an adverse media and friendly society, we look at every individual as a poster trying to change one another. In addition to, critique because they feel the need to have the right to have an opinion on others. There are negative conceptions about being overweight, it is vital to always consider others opinions. Before continuing look at the people surrounding you, what was your first thought about them? Why do judge a person just by the way they look. By media a consumer is bombarded with images and statements on how we are supposed to look, maybe it is time to look outside the status quo.
