The show Friday Night Lights gives viewers an inside look into the lives of high school football players of a small town in Texas. The show is astonishing on many levels, from it's unique camera styles to the complex characters. Many people usually dismiss athletes as dull characters and some think of sports as something pointless or shallow. The show disproves these thoughts by giving viewers a perspective into the lives of the players, coaches, and fans of the Dillon Panthers football team. This show ultimately builds empathy for the lives of the football players in the show, which helps in understanding real life athletes and their coaches. Coach Taylor is a major character in the show, he embodies what a good coach and husband is supposed to be like. He cares for his team like …show more content…
This made the show feel more real and therefore gets the audience more into what happens in the show. The close-ups are very important, they reveal a lot of what's going on and often are symbolic. A good example of this can be seen in season 1 episodes 1 when Jason Street (Main quarterback) is laying on the ground, facing up and not moving after having tackled a defensive player. As the medics rush to assist him the camera zooms into his eyes which are blood shot red and reveal he's extremely scared. Then in shows a close up of his feet which aren't moving and reveal he might be paraplegic. This is effective because it makes the audience feel what the character is feeling and almost makes one feel like they're there. What this show does is show that theres more to football, the players, and the coaches than meets the eye. Through complex characters, the show builds empathy for these individuals and possibly real life people. It also shows the copious factors that make a sport great. Complimented by film techniques such as the camera angles, all these factors make the show
“Pain is weakness leaving the body.” Some kids play sports to have fun whereas others play sports to become elite athletes. The youth playing in the Texas Youth Football Association have no choice but to play and train like elite athletes. The film, Friday Night Tykes, illustrates how the youth are pushed passed their limits to become successful football players and successful teams.
“‘Athletics last for such a short period of time. It ends for people. But while it lasts, it creates this make-believe world where normal rules don’t apply. We build this false atmosphere. When it’s over and the harsh reality sets in, that’s the real joke we play on people’” (Bissinger xiv). “Friday Night Lights” shows the darker side of high school football. Players are taught to play games to win, and thats all that matters. Football players are put under a tremendous amount of pressure, almost enough to be considered unfair. Even though football is a “team sport”, pressure on individual players is unnecessary. Some players have the burden of the team, the city, their family, and their future, resting on their shoulders. These players
Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, uses emotion and the supernatural in her books as well. The emotion in the books spawn from Bella Swan who must choose to either love a vampire, Edward Cullen, or a werewolf, Jacob Black. Bella confesses to Edward that she is “Not afraid of [him]. [She] is only afraid of losing [him]”(“Twilight Quotes”). The series highlights Bella’s inner struggles to love Edward or Jacob and emotion can be observed throughout the entire series. Supernatural aspects come from the monsters inside the novels like the vampires and werewolves.
Sustaining the ambitions of not only themselves but the alumni and town of Odessa, Texas is a lot to ask from a young adult. That’s exactly what Permian football provides to the people of Odessa, where the post economic boom of the oil business has left the town in a racially tense, economic crisis. The lights on Permian High School’s football field are the only sanctuary for the west Texas town. Socially and racially divided, Odessa’s mass dependence on high school football constructs glorified expectations for the football team to temporarily disguise the disappointments that come with living in a town tagged as the “murder capital” of

Football is America’s go to entertainment sport. The NFL hit its peak in 2015, with an average of 114.1 million television viewers throughout the year (“Statista,” 2017). This sport is loved by all, the players, parents, coaches, and fans. But, is football merely entertainment? Is it just a simple game, teaching young boys the value of teamwork, dedication, and discipline? Are parents spending their Friday nights to support their boys, or is there something bigger happening? In H.G Bissinger’s novel, Friday Night Lights, one can see the true effects of this toxic drug through the mindset of the players and the actions of the coaches. While society sees football as entertainment, it actually functions more like a drug.

They showed a lot of close up shots because it was an emotional story line so we were required to view all the facial expressions of the actors. In one of the initial scene when they first met at the group counselling session the director uses close ups of both characters to identify the feelings and connection they had amongst each other so this enables the audience to connect with the love story throughout the movie
The individuals in Odessa have “shared values or generally accepted standards of desirability” (Wallace and Wolf 18) regarding their feelings of high school football and the meaning of coming together as a town in support for the team. Hence the values that are placed on football, solidarity, and winning the theory of functionalism can be seen and applied in Friday Night Lights.
Is High School football a sport, or is it more than that to some people? Recent newspaper headlines include such items as coaches abusing student athletes; fathers of athletes murdering coaches, and mother’s disabilitating cheerleading candidates to assure their daughters make the cheerleading team. In Odessa, Texas high school football is a major contributor to the society of a small town in Texas society. A medical drama along the lines of ER, Grey’s Anatomy is on its 14th season and still going strong. The show starts off following a group of medical interns at a hospital. The interns all become friends and also start having relationships with other doctors. The show is addictive and engaging.
Americans love to be at the edge of their seats, and crime shows do just that. Crime dramas are very suspenseful, whether it being from the near death experience of a loved character, or just the suspense of cracking the case. Another reason people love crime television is the sense of hope it gives that our CSI team and police will be able to find every criminal and solve every case. After the incident on September eleventh the country needed to know that our police force can handle everything and so more crime shows were made to satisfy our hunger for security, and although the shows are fictional it still makes people still feel safe and confident in our

For a lot of kids, it’s not until it’s all said and done, and they look back on it several years later, that they realize the difference the sport made in their lives. They are proud of playing the game. Have you ever met anybody who accomplished playing four years of high school football, and at the end of that run said, ‘Man, I wish I wouldn’t have played’? It doesn’t get said. Football players aren’t perfect. Nobody is. But millions of former players, one by one, can recount the life-altering principles they learned from football. They know the value of football is the values in football. That’s why high school football – and particularly high school coaches – play such a vital role in our society. Our football coaches are on the front lines of the battle for the hearts and minds of the boys in our society.
Close Ups were shown to see the facial expressions of the characters, to show what they were thinking in that moment and also to demonstrate that one was going too fast and the other driver that made an error and it was to put us in that position.
