Growing up in Aspen Colorado it is an extreme understatement to say that I was sheltered. Aspen in itself is a very liberal town that celebrates and welcomes difference to be apart of our community. During ski season, there is an entire week dubbed by the locals as ‘Gay Ski Week’ in which members all over the country and apart of LGBTQ community come to our town to enjoy its beauty, skiing, and above all further educate and advocate our area about their community. There are comedic acts, panels, and even a drag fashion show in which the contestants ski down the mountain as if it were a runway.
The inclusion of everyone doesn’t stop there for Aspen either. At the end of June each year the Aspen Ideas Festival is hosted where politicians, celebrities,

On the day of his diagnosis, he spoke about being alone in the doctor's office upon hearing the news and contemplating jumping from the window, terrified for what this would mean for himself, his family, and even his image. However, after a little contemplation, Ruby knew ultimately that he would need to fight. Fight for his fallen friends who could no longer fight for themselves, and fight for a better future for the gay community that would come after his time. That’s the biggest thing I took to heart from this experience. The importance of fighting for those who cannot fight themselves. I am a straight white female. Although I have faced oppression due to being a woman, I know that I am very privileged. I do not have to worry about my race being a trait that dictates the way people perceive me. And I do not have to experience blatant homophobia because in our society straight is still perceived to be the default sexuality. So it’s my job to use the advantage I was given in society to extend the olive branch and speak out about the injustices that others face and who may not be able to speak out alone. However, it’s not my job to define what queerness is. I feel all too often people who are not apart of the LGBTQ community are the very people telling you what it means to be queer. Queerness isn’t black and white, it’s on a spectrum, and it’s time that people stop being …show more content…
However, there were so many things throughout this course that I had little to no knowledge about. A lack of knowledge leads to a lack of empathy and understanding in my eyes. I truly do believe that discrimination is taught, so as a society if we were to continue to educate individuals about queerness and its relation to so many things in our everyday lives, government, and even ourselves, we are that much closer to ending discrimination. I know I might be optimistic, but I believe that people are inherently good, and if those of us who are given a louder voice and bigger platform to speak on in society, used it to call attention to injustices and work together towards solutions, I truly believe we have a chance of making queer apart of the
During a press conference on Monday, Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr announced that he plans to retire after the 2015 season.
When Christopher was eight years old, he didn’t know that he would be attacked and be scarred for life in less than a day. Christopher arrived at his friend's house. His friend told him to hold a stick and say fetch to the husky. Before Christopher could even throw the stick the dog viciously attacked him. His friend ran to get help. After that Chris had to have 1000 Stitches. Chris had very bad nightmares about the dog attacking him. That dog scarred him for a very long time. To this day he still has nightmares about that dog. There was more to come after this event.
What if your best friend went on an adventure. They had everything they had ever wanted. They didn't tell you or their family where they were going or how long they would be gone. They just picked up and left. Would you respect their decision to not tell anyone their plans? Would you think that this was a good idea of theirs, or would you think that this was a stupid decision on their part? Well this is what Christopher McCandless did. In 1968 McCandless was born. He was born to a good, wealthy, and happy family. He had everything any child could ever wish for. He was smart, athletic, and had a good education. In June 1990 he completed collage. In July of 1990 Christopher McCandless left his family and almost all belongings, and didn't tell anyone where he was going, or how long he'd be gone. Three years later McCandless was found dead in a blue bus located in Alaska. He had died of starvation. He went off and, ¨lived his life.¨ McCandless went out and lived in the wild. While Christopher McCandless died peacefully, the question has arose on whether McCandless was a noble adventurer or an arrogant fool. The evidence from many stories and social media clearly states that McCandless was in fact an arrogant fool. Christopher McCandless was an arrogant fool because he was not prepared, he
But still, she didn’t let anyone’s disapproval of her identity deter her, and continued to carry the burden of being alienated in order to remain true to herself. By expressing her homosexuality with self-assurance, others were eventually forced to accept Ruby for who she was, and she has since gone on to be extremely successful in life, having been selected to act in a number of films including the Australian comedy “Suite for Fleur”, designing her own fashion range, and much more. In 2008 and 2009, she was also chosen as one of the ‘25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians’ by “Same Same”, an Australian online gay and lesbian community. This indicates that true existence can only be found when our decisions and actions are truly our own; when we stand alone and free of connections, without social influence.
When you see yourself living out your dream, the thought of what you're most passionate about pulls you in. Passions in one's life change based on what had affected that person. Dreams are defined to change. However, the benefits of these thoughts is that they belong to you and only you. Not one person's opinions matter but your own. Chris McCandless simply was living out his own ideal life, the way he wanted; not to the idea of his parents, his friends or of society. McCandless wanted to escape society and civilization which he felt was tying him down, while also trying to discover himself. McCandless is not by any means a wacko. He was simply defying society and its ideal expectation it holds upon us as a whole.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, many of the book’s characters show courage. Courage is shown when a character stands up for their beliefs, even when they face heavy opposition. They decide to fight even when they know they will most likely lose, or even if they are the only one fighting. Courage is standing up for one’s beliefs, even if it means standing alone against the whole world. Three characters who show courage are Mrs. Dubose, Atticus Finch, and Arthur “Boo” Radley.
I came into this class not so naïve as some students may have been. I’ve grown up going to public schools, living in a diverse small town, and having interracial relationships in my family. Although I was informed on some forms of racism and the fact that racism does in fact still exist, I didn’t realize it was extensive as it really is. All the readings, videos, and lectures have directly related back to the purpose of the course. As a whole, I feel like this class has grown in knowledge not only about how racism affects people, but how to change and make a difference. This class has informed me a lot more about the unfortunately thriving acts of racism in the United States.
It is clear Ryerson University needs a better way to make education accessible to all their students. With the constant delays of the transit systems we have, and the rising costs to commute, students are skipping lectures. The best solution to this problem is starting VR enabled lectures. This will keep expenses low for students and save time that students struggle to find. VR enabled lectures are far superior to the alternative, which is living on campus. By living on campus expenses increase and you’re not in the comfort of your home. Also it is not guaranteed you will get approved to live on residence because of the limited beds available. Being a computer science students we already have the necessary knowledge to make this possible, as
Because of this funding, more women are being recognized as victims and have equal access to help regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and immigration status. Hence, in addition to saving lives, VAWA 2013, saves money by reducing or even preventing future violence as well as related social costs.

My freshman year at University of Mississippi began nearly 40 years after the school was integrated. I tailgated in the Grove with the seas of people on football Saturdays and I walked among the antebellum-style architecture and magnolia trees without a care. Long gone were the days of the segregation where the color of my skin mattered. I was proud to be there then and I am proud to be an alumnus now, however sometimes when I tell people where I went to college it catches them off guard and some look at me puzzled as if to say “Why there?” For many people the reputation and symbols of the University of Mississippi and history as a battleground during the civil rights era are hard to forget. As great of a school as it is these negative
Throughout this course, I have read many articles that have left distinct imprints on how I view things. I used to think of gender, race and class as something natural and meaningful. However, after this course I am inclined to feel differently. It is truly upsetting that each social construct results in some type of disadvantage for some and empowerment for others.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s, society wasn’t the most accepting of places for people who were different from the “social norms”. Now I know, people today still struggle with trying to fit in and be “normal” but it was different. Being a gay man living in San Fransisco at the time, which had a large gay population, Richard Rodriguez had a hard time dealing with the discrimination he faced. Richard Rodriguez was an American journalist who wrote and published a memoir about his life as a gay man. In October of 1990, Rodriguez published his memoir “Late Victorians” in Harper’s Magazine, a critically acclaimed publication of the time. In his memoir, Rodriguez describes what it was like to realize he was gay and watch as the country changed to become a more accepting place. He does this by setting up how things can change and then explaining the actual ways things change for the gay population.

I completely understand why you are concerned about my use of marijuana not only for the well being of this family but also for my own health and future. I definitely understand your concerns, but you need to understand that you grew up in a completely different generation than me. Marijuana use is very common now days not only in The United States but all around the world. Many people who you interact with every day have at one point in their lives or even currently smoke marijuana, yet they are still able support their families, have a steady job, and even in my situation get a good education. One of the reasons you haven 't realized this is because there are no long term effects and while on the drug most people are
