People are dismissing the idea of owning pets and the benefits they bring more and more. They do not see the multitudes of benefits when a pet is accepting into their home. These pets are not just restricted to dogs and cats, it branches out to amphibious, reptilian, and equestrian animals as well. These animals help children to create an identity and create social abilities. Not only that but also they help improve the quality of life of many. That is why animals are often used for a form as animal therapy. The calming effect that animals bring soothes and inspires a person’s body chemistry to heal itself rather than having to take medication after medication. So, why then do we not bring animals more into our daily lives?

This is most proven in children with Down's Syndrome but is not limited just to those children. A child with autism have rigid behavior and thought patterns ( Hall). Exposure to non human species can benefit children who have trouble adapting (Hall). Improvements in social behaviors and functioning are seen in children who come in contact with horses and dogs. Contact with these animals also help improve sensory processing and self-regulation behaviors ( Hall ). Pets or also known to give a calming effect (Fischman). These animals give the children a way to learn, because if the become to aggressive or agitated the animals will leave. And with that when they calm down the animals will return; teaching children that when they are calm things go they way they would like and people won’t leave. Service dogs also give a focal point in which children can go to when they are confronted with a new situation making it appear less scary and expanding comfort zones. Allowing more freedom to families to go do more while at the same time securing the safety and comfort of their …show more content…
A person must first accept themselves before being able to be accepted by others. A dog owner has been found to be extraverted, agreeable, and conscientious. They also rate themselves more masculine, independent, and athletic (Crammer). Cat owners tend to be more neuroticism and open to new experiences. Whereas people who own horses are found to have a large amounts of masculine characteristics but lower in nurturing (Crammer). Turtle owners normally have a high sense of belonging and are determined while being dependable. Concluding with bird owners who have strong connections, are nurturance and are loving and social (Crammer). All of these contribute to how a person is seen not only by themselves but also by society. This gives them a place where they belong and can thrive to move forward as a person. Their characteristics show others who they are and determine how they treat others. Giving people a community in which they can rely on in any circumstance. Their pets also get them a gateway to meeting new people while creating bonds between animals. That bond also creates a way for people to realize who they are from a personal level. They can analyze behavior by the way they talk or act around pets. If they are stressed they have a way to outlet that stress in a constructive mainer with their chosen
In the biography, Hampshire School for Wayward Wizards, shows an example of just that. “Autism made school and social life hard, but it made animals easy. (Grandin, pg. 159, pp. 2.)” This tells me that because Temple had autism, it made her social life difficult. Horses understood Temple. They had been interacting with her and are now her great companions. Horses have been there for Temple more than people ever did. Although, they changed her negatively by distracting her away from her studies. Animals are understanding to some people, but to others, they are their
Mountain Vista’s High school class of 2017 was able to create and elective named Dog Therapy. Which would make Mountain Vista the only high school in the Douglas County schooling area to have a dog therapy “class”. But you won’t know until you are enrolled in the class is that you will have to go through many hours of training. To only reach a .25 credit and no letter grade on your transcript. Which is a huge misfortune, because you will put just as much work in this class as you would in any other class if not more. So with the guidance of my consoler and I, we decided to propose this to the Dougal county board and to the assistant principal. With the rest of the second semester I created a Dog Therapy class proposal, and got the green light from the
Numerous people have pets that accompany them through life. Cats, rabbits, birds, and dogs are popular household pets. They keep their human owners company and quickly become part of the family. Owners refer to them as their "children," and younger kids in the family consider pets to be their "siblings." Immediately, an unbreakable bond is formed between pet and owner. Cuddling with dogs or cats seem to cause stress to disappear. Everything seems to be okay when a dog or cat sits on your lap. There is a lot of love there. Additionally, dogs seem to be the most popular pets, although I do know lovely "cat people." Actress Maggie Lawson, (Psych) knows all about dogs, how they are our best friends, and why we should all love them.
method of therapy Thrive horticultural therapists build a set of activities for each gardener to improve their particular health needs, this type of therapy benefits people by helping them recover and find their way again, learn new skills, and slow down degenerative illness of the mind to some degree, Nature arts and crafts, art activities using natural materials such as wood, glass, and clay. Clay and wood being the two most commonly used due to their easy workability, Animal assisted therapy (AAT), Animal assisted interventions (AAI), and Care Farming are three types of animal assisted therapy. This type of therapy is usually for children who have been diagnosed with physical, emotional, social or learning disabilities. “Therapy provided through tasks and activities necessary to run farms, gardens, landscapes or ranches is not by any means new to this millennium's repertoire of interventions for children.”(occupational-therapy.advanceweb.com), Wilderness therapy, is “cognitive behavioral therapy to combat negative thinking, journaling to help shed light on depression and anxiety, and group activities to overcome social phobia and develop greater self-confidence, to name a few.”(apa.org) this type of therapy has been around since 1886 but it wasn’t considered therapy
While humans and animals are commonly seen to think apart and generate thoughts differently than each other, the truth is that since the beginning, humans and animals have had many ways in which they found each other to be compatible with the opposite, because they had come to a realization that they needed each other physically, emotionally, and mentally. And of course though pets may not be suitable to someone’s capricious persona, studies over time have shown that, spending quality time with a pet boosts happiness and helps your immune system.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a pet as “a domesticated animal kept for pleasure rather than a utility.” Dogs have been considered man's best friend for centuries. They have stood side by side through natural disasters, family tragedies, the gift of life, birthdays, and anything else that comes to mind. These furry friends do not judge people for how they look, but show love and compassion to everyone. Dogs help people cope mentally and emotionally, receive sufficient exercise, and create new friendships.
An animal that would take care of your house when nobody was home and protect the owners from burglars from breaking in. This movement or trend started forming in recent years. As Cesar Chavez once quoted, “We need in a special way , to work twice as hard to help people understand that the animals are fellow creatures , that we must protect and love them as we love ourselves” Animals today have as much equal rights as family members today. As many more pet parents are adopting and falling in love with these animals and being able to connect with them on an emotional level, Pet parents are able to relate and equate animals to human children. Many more couples are finding themselves with fewer children or not wanting to have the burden of raising actual children. As a result this trend keeps growing. Another reason that people are starting to see the increasing number in this trend is some adults are finding themselves with the loneliness, where the children they once had are moving away. These animals are feeling a void of loneliness. According to a recent survey done by Stanley Cohen about eighty-one percent of people do not consider themselves to be just a pet owner, but a pet parent and treating their pets equal to their children.
Animal Research is topic that is highly debated by several people, especially those in the medical and the vet world. Why is this such a debatable topic to individuals? Many people consider animal research to cruel and inhumane, and others believe that it is for the greater good to help find cures for humans. Ron Karpati, a former pediatrician and who is now a medical researcher, agrees that animal research is used for the greater good even though it inflicts pain on animals. Karpati wrote an article called, “ I am the Enemy,” and in this article he states several points that prove his belief on animal research.
In the autobiography “My Story” by Temple Grandin, it talks a lot about her life at the boarding school she went to. Through living with animals we can learn just how comforting they can be, “ Teasing hurts. The kids would tease me… My new school solved that problem. The school had a stable and horses for the kids to ride.” (Grandin) Showing that the animals helped her feel better and they were there when spree kids teased her. Another quote is from “Saying Goodbye to a Faithful Pal where it talks about a guy saying goodbye to his dog and his most treasured companion.
Society makes one of the biggest impacts on how we look at things. So how does society look at veterinary medicine and the staff? The field is often looked down on even though they go through a lot and have to handle a lot which leads to high suicide rates and a huge burnout in the field. So why would people who have devoted their entire live to saving, take their own?
Animal assisted therapy, or AAT for short, began with the first documented case at an asylum run by the Society of Friends in England 1792. The first documented case of animal assisted therapy in the United States was not until 1919 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington D.C. During the 1930s, famous psychoanalysist Sigmund Freud become an advocate for AAT when he used his dog, Jofi, during his therapy sessions. He found that his patients were more comfortable talking to him when Jofi was present. I believe that AAT proves to be beneficial for both mental and physical disorders according to articles I have read prior to the research done for this project.
These animals help people clear their heads and think about something else (Christiansen). They also help people snap out of what they are thinking about. They can also be trained to search homes for intruders to help people feel much safer at home (“Veteran with PTSD”). Along with helping us feel safer they can make people feel like they have a purpose in life, causing them to then become instantly happy (Siddiqui; Falligant). The animals can also do simple things like house chores. For example, they can flip light switches on and off (Siddiqui). So now people who have a hard time standing up or walking can have their animal help them with the chores. The animals can also achieve a task in various locations (“What is animal”). Since they are mainly directed toward youth, it increases their socializing with other people, and help to improve their behavior (“Benefits of Pet”; Falligant). With some patients, they have a hard time accessing their emotions, so the animals can help them do that (“What is animal”). Animal assisted therapy has many benefits no matter the age of the
As previously mentioned, I have always been drawn towards animals. At the age of six, all the way through high school, I was determined that I was destined to be a veterinarian. Growing up I watched dog training shows and learned about different animals. All of my favorite movies had talking animals in it and given human-like qualities. The more knowledge I gathered, the more I believed animals had rights. I treated all of my pets with love and formed a bond with them, even my pet fish. I used to watch Animal Cops on Animal planet with my grandma and was always appalled at the mistreatment of animals. They have feelings, thoughts, even memories, just as we do. Or, more specifically, just as children do. My dogs in particular have always been my children. The one I have now is more like my baby than previous dogs. We have formed a bond, just like the bond a mother forms with her baby. Pets become part of the family and the best
One in ten dogs born will find a permanent home, therefore what happens to the other nine? The other nine dogs likely will end up in traditional animal shelters only to succumb to euthanization if not adopted within a week. “A traditional animal shelter must accept, or chooses to accept, any and all companion animals regardless of health, temperament or space availability, with no limits.” (AHeinz57 Pet Rescue) A growing number of people feel that animals should not be exploited by people and that they should have the same rights as humans.
Animals have always played an essential role in many aspects of this world. Some people look upon these roles with favoritism, some with disgust. Animals are considered different from humans by some people because of their behavior, mannerisms or actions. Some animals are used as food by humans and other animals, while others are trapped for their furs. Many times people acquire animals for pets, only to neglect or mistreat them. For many years, the ethical treatment of animals has been a very controversial topic for moral discussion, often in reference to an ethical code or rule. In this paper, I will discuss these ethical issues identified with the treatment of animals as well as exploring these issues from a virtual ethicist’s
