Historically, individuals with criminal records have faced a tough uphill battle when trying to break the cycle of crime by getting a job. The lack of ability to get gainful, legal employment leads to a high rate of recidivism. With no effective path forward, they end up committing crime to survive, leading to more arrests, more jail time and a general downward spiral in life.
In recognition of this unfortunate and frustrating pattern, the School District of Philadelphia has decided to do something to try to give more people a way off this hamster wheel. Their solution involves expanding technical instructional programs. This will go nicely with the national "Ban the Box" movement that advocates against eliminating these individuals right off the bat with use of a check box on page one. Recently, the district was awarded a $945,000 federal government grant to help with this goal. This

This can help enormously with the creation of real solutions by saving on the interest that a loan would involve and generally lowering the amount of risk involved in the development and expansion process. In addition to receiving training, enrollees can get access to critical support services, such as mentoring, career counseling, and workforce readiness training. They can also get help with any learning disabilities or study challenges they may face. It is not at all uncommon for people with a criminal record to have some sort of hidden disability, such as a learning disability, and a track record of doing poorly in school. Accessing important services can be the make or break for helping them successfully escape a life of crime.
The city of Philadelphia can be proud of its current efforts in this regard. Some of the local partners for this initiative include: The Philadelphia Youth Network, Community College of Philadelphia, and the juvenile divisions of Philadelphia's Department of Human
A person who may have made bad decisions in the past and decides to change his or her life, can’t get a job. You must have a job to get what you need and want. A person must have a job to take care of their family, eat, and live a normal life. It’s the start of having a piece of mind and knowing that they can get better. When a person has a criminal background such as assault or drug charges, society does not accept that a person can change and be a better person.
Phillip it is clear that you have a complete explanation of the back ground requirement that so many employers utilize to classify potential employees. Yet with this classification many very capable candidates are quickly eliminated for either old run in’s with the law or youthful ignorance. To this end, we as a society have alienated the youth who have fallen into the trap of conviction of a crime. Clearly it is not necessary to penalize people who have repaid their debt to society for their life making them unfit for hire. The question is what is the answer to solve this injustice that is imposed on these candidates? In my view companies could have what they call a conditional hire that would go longer for a year than a traditional 90 day
Many people living in poor neighborhoods might have been to prison, have had little to no education, or even health problems. There are over six million ex-convicts in the United States. Research proposes that the best way for them to stay out of prison again is to reintroduce them into the working world and finding them jobs, but most employers are hesitant in giving them a chance. With an unemployment rate approaching its highest, getting employed is challenging. If someone has been in prison, the chance of them getting a job decreases drastically. In chapter five of David K. Shipler’s The Working Poor: Invisible in America, Shipler emphasizes on attaining a job, maintaining a job, and living while employed to successfully construct his arguments
The ideal alternative we identified in the Cisco case was ensuring that the Business-to-business integration included software that would not only serve a greater purpose for Cisco’s internal processes, but ensure that it is implemented from Cisco’s customer perspectives, to help identify and understand the consumer’s needs. The ideal Alternatives identified for Redbox involves providing costumers more convince options. This can be achieved through various avenues such as implementing a Video On demand platform or extending the title licensing agreements. One of Redbox’s competitive advantages is that the company has direct output deals with distribution companies such as Lionsgate and Paramount for same day as home video release and with Universal
The pursuit of economic and employment equality should be the right of all; however, it is unfortunate that those with criminal histories are often deprived of this. The question of disclosure or banning the box is a dual edged sword by which many convicted individuals continue to suffer from. As discussed by Kevin Hyde in the video Ban The Box, many of the jobs that exclude persons with criminal backgrounds have little or nothing to do with the job being performed and that a key to reduction in crime is the employment of those individuals who are qualified to perform the tasks (Ban The Box -TedxJacksonville, 2015). Banning the box in theory from the community corrections side offers several promising benefits. The reduction of taxpayer funding because the offender is working and no longer a cost to the state or community, the reduction in recidivism due to employment, thus the decline in crimes committed as a means of support, and obviously gainful or marginal employment which raises the economic status of
One of the main barriers that inmates face when they are released from prison is limited cognitive skills, limited education and work experience, and substance abuse or other mental health problems. Substance abuse and other mental health problems limit employability because it limits the job readiness that is required for employment (Holzer, Raphael & Stoll, 2003). Another issue that is faced when inmates are released into society is that any skills that they did have prior to conviction has diminished greatly and they face lower pay due to their diminished or lack of skills, and the attitudes that have been developed during their time in prison deeply affects their attitude during their search for employment. Offenders also face another barrier when searching for employment. Many businesses can be held legally liable for any criminal action that their employees may cause (Holzer, Raphael & Stoll, 2003). These barriers that offenders face upon release is why solid solutions and planning must be implemented when considering the integration of ex-felons into society and preparation for reentry must begin well before the scheduled release date in order to successfully reintegrate an inmate into society and reduce the rate of recidivism.
A history of incarceration reduces an ex-felon’s chance of being hired by fifteen to thirty percent as well as the annual number of weeks worked by six to eleven weeks. That is a large amount of people! This is a big problem that is not to be dismissed. Having been incarcerated leads to struggles in finding a job. Some employers do not even consider hiring people with any kind of criminal record, they are much more likely to hire someone without one instead (Prison Legal News). These statistics and studies show that unemployment rates are in fact higher for
These include not just parole, also probation or drug court. The easiest way of violating one of the community programs above is employment. It is not just a suggestion; it’s a requirement to remain to one’s freedom. Which is uncovered challenging, and in this day and time nearly unrealistic! Not only due to today’s economy; also due to that bad choice(s) or a criminal history can make finding employment difficult. NIJ (National Institute of Justice) found that a criminal record reduces the likelihood of a job or offer by over 50%! (Solomon) With another study showing that 92% of employers use some sort of background check. With any kind of simple arrest or criminal history (even if it didn’t lead to a conviction.) that shows quite a problem. So being on a community corrections program and the conditions of the job employment is very discouraging to more than half of those sentenced to these programs. Recidivism is bound to occur for most
Employment is always an issue when it comes to an ex-offender. Not only is it hard for the everyday person in society to find employment due to a poor economy, but it is much harder for an ex-offender. While in prison, prisoners are usually made to work. Unlike other programs such as counseling, prison work programs can be justified for reasons other than rehabilitation of the individual offender. From the perspective of the policy maker in the criminal justice system, they can help manage the population by occupying the time of the prisoners, aid in the operation of the prison, create revenue (maybe), and provide a
and Australia have similarities in the protection of individuals with a history of incarceration. In both cases, it is evident that the people suffer from similar problems. A criminal record can have a significant impact on a person's employment prospects. In both the U.S. and Australia individuals who have a criminal record often face significant barriers to fully participation in the society. Trying to find a job is one of the areas of greatest difficulty for former convicts. Everyone believes that no matter what a person's criminal record, each person's ability to fulfill that jobs requirement should be assessed on a case-by-case basis to avoid
Crime has a capacity to create brutal sequences causing unemployment, economic downturns and instability. Poverty and crime combined leave people with two choices: either take part in criminal activities, or try to find legal ways of income which is very difficult if having criminal records. After being rehabilitated in jail “more than 40 percent of ex-cons commit crimes within three years of
If there is no job, there is no money, and if there is no money desperation sets in and makes room for crime such as robbing, burglary, and drug trafficking. This is not to say that all inmates are unqualified to be released because of poor job readiness, but other inmates who are job ready lack responsibility and sane judgement because of poor rehabilitation programs short in duration, or not available. Screening is also poor because parole boards have not come up with a better way to verify the sincerity of the inmate when he goes before the panel. For example: there are plenty of inmates that have gone through the parole system before
Across the nation and world assisted suicide is an issue that has been gaining attention for several years. With famous cases such as Jack Kevorkian it has become a household term and everyone has an opinion. There are strong cases on both sides, but the bottom line is while it may sound good for the present, it is not for the future. Assisted Suicide should not be legalized in Alabama as the negative outcomes far exceed the positive outcomes in the areas of impact on society, politics and medical education
Do you know if any of your family members have been convicted? You ever wonder how hard it was for an ex-convict to find a job without being turned down because of their past. In the past ten years ex-convicts all have been experiencing this problem. This is a very serious problem that is going on in today’s world. Ex-convicts’ top problem when coming out of prison is finding job. Not many business owners want to hire an ex-convict. Many business owners try to avoid this as much as possible because they want to avoid the problems that could come along with the ex-convicts. But what they do not understand they could be passing up potential good committed workers. Many times, to stop the problem is to simply avoid it over all to prevent it. Many business owners aren’t willing to take the risk due to the thought of being robbed under their noses. Many ex-convicts have problems fitting into the world yet alone being rejected for their past decisions. In order to solve the problem of ex-cons, business owners need to be informed about ex—convicts, understand what the ex-convicts, and have business owners talk to other business owner about their experience.
Boxing - a violent cage fight, or a crowd pleasing sport? Boxing is a high intensified sport that can be seen as helping the fighter in life or permanently damaging the fighters future. Many say that boxing is one of the safest sports; however, boxing can leave permanent brain damage from constant punches to the skull. The sport boxing is for managers to earn money while their fighter is in the ring fighting against another human until one gives up, or gets knocked out. A fight could be the end of one’s career, or even one’s life. Boxing should be banned because the money earned does not trump the risk of death, the mixed messages from fighters in the ring confuse the laws regarding assault, and the constant punches to and athletes head leaves permanent damage.
