In the human’s life it is a given that individuals will face obstacles. These obstacles may not arise on a daily basis but no matter how hard we may try avoid them they will still find us. According to Anna Harrington, author of Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way, an individual's mental state has the biggest influence on whether we can overcome the obstacles or be stuck dealing with them for long periods of times.
The term resilience is described as being an individuals ability to overcome an obstacle successfully. If the individual can face the obstacle, overcomes the obstacle, and gain strength from doing so this is also known as resilience. However, not all individuals can overcome an obstacles successfully; some may develop other issues
Resilience is the ability to overcome hard situations, learn from mistakes, and use the past to get over future hardships. Jeanette Walls shows resilience in many ways. Although her family is not too successful and live a much more
On the other hand some factors work against one’s resiliency such as an absence of a parent, violence, and abuse. Being resilient is an ability learned throughout a person’s life and experiences. It cannot be taught but must be
Resilience is about how an individual deals, resists, recovers and learns from adversity’s in life. If a child is resilient they are less likely to be damaged as a result of negative experiences and are more likely to learn from and move on. In order for a child to be resilient they need to believe in themselves and have others they can rely on in their lives.
Resilience is the power or the ability to return to the original form. “Resilience is born by grounding yourself in your own loveliness, hitting notes you thought were way out of your range” (94). Father Gregory Boyle says this because he knows that resilience is needed in order to change. Resilience is important because we can become better people by doing things, we thought we couldn’t do. In the book, Tattoos on the Heart, The Power of Boundless Compassion, Boyle claims resilience is essential in our lives because it is the key to do better.
Our ability to overcome obstacles that arise in our lives is paramount to our survival within our existence while here on earth. The article “Where There is a Will, There is a Way” by Anne Harrington that we read this week gives a lot of good information to the reader but also the reader will notice that many of these elements are automatically incorporated when a person is in the process of overcoming an obstacle.
First of all, I would like to define what resilience is. Major scholars believe it is the process to recover from trauma, or the ability to respond to adversity. According to Sergeant and Laws-Chapman (2012), resilience refers to “the ability to adapt to adverse conditions while maintaining a sense of purpose, balance, and positive mental and
“Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it’s less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you’ve lost, or you can accept it and try to put something together that is good” — Elizabeth Edwards. Becoming resilient is not an easy thing to do, because it takes mental strength and time. For example, in the book Once by Morris Gleitzman, a fictional story, Felix the protagonist is a Jewish boy who was able to stay strong despite all the hardships he faced. Felix becomes resilient by putting others before himself which helped him get over the many struggles he was faced with.
Resilience is a term that is often applied to those who have faced hardship and viewed the experience in a positive light as an opportunity to grow and change for the better (Wagnild & Collins, 2009). The definition however seems to vary from place to place. Ungar et al. (2008) stated “definitions of resilience are ambiguous when viewed across cultures" (p.174) which is why the understanding of resilience may be difficult to capture (as cited in Windle, Bennett & Noyes, 2011). Although the literature agrees on several common themes about resilience there are many varying opinions on how to define the concept or the attributing factors. Earvolino-Ramirez (2007) and
People have learned to be resilient in order to overcome serious hardships. A person’s resilience can be seen through how they handle bad experiences; to be resilient in the face of adversity. People who never give up and always fight back even when it gets hard are resilient. Some believe that resilience is a trait that can be learned.
There are many ways to define resiliency, however, most definitions concentrate on the existence of both adversity and progressive change within the individual (Luther, et al., 2000). Sanders, Munford, & Boden (2017) state that resilience is creating a positive version of a high risk situation at an extreme degree and producing a positive development from it. Solivan, Wallace, Kaplan, & Harville (2015) state that resilience is the focus of resistance to many physical, social environment risks, as well as overcoming stress and adversity to uphold a healthy mental and physical wellbeing. Resilience can be defined in many different ways, however, the one common theme is that an individual is turning a negative situation into a positive one in their life.
Resilience has been topic that we have learned and are discussing in my English class. When you can overcome hardships faster and easier when you are more resilient person. We have been analyzing an article called “The Science of Bouncing Back” by Mandy Oaklander. Oaklander discusses methods of many people on their experience, becoming a more resilient person. People respond to emotion and hardships in their life differently, and people with more struggles overcome it more gradually, and Mandy Oaklander made me consider the possibilities resilience has, and can offer in everyday life.
Resilience is a state of being empowered to seek knowledge and tolerance for a situation. The article about resilience is about treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This article is about a 24-year-old female who experience an attack from a person with large rock while she was going home. She had just stepped off the subway when someone hit her on the head. This young lady was rescued by 2 females and the ambulance was called by a bystander and she was rushed to the hospital. Over time this 24-year-old experienced signs and symptoms of PTSD and had to develop resilience to function effectively in life.
When I heard a term called resilience, I have no idea about it and think that it is not related to me. After I had a lecture with a topic resilience. I realize it is necessary and I need to face many adversity in my life. Also, I remember something happened in my past are shown my resilience level. I would like to share the story in my life to show the factors which are indicated in the last part can show resilience level.
Resilience is the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress — such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems, workplace and/or financial stressors. It means "bouncing back" from difficult experiences (American Psychology Association [APA], n.d.). Human behavior when submitted to stress or adverse conditions, particularly in the context of health care, experiences a range
Resilience according to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, is the ability to adapt to a situation that may alter an individual’s lifestyle in a positive way, without being consumed by the negative outcomes (National Scientific Council on Developing Child, 2015).
