Personal use of firearms have stopped and prevented criminals from committing their crimes. A majority of personal firearm use is protection, both public and private. The NRA magazine contains a section dedicated to the 'armed citizen.' This section is a compilation of stories of how armed citizens had a positive impact in their personal life or community while using fire arms. These include stories of citizen arrests, crime prevention, home protection, and everything in between. Home protection is a popular subject to grace the armed citizens page. Home protection is one of the leading reasons why firearms are purchased. Protecting their family is a parents main priority. Law enforcement arrives after it is to late to prevent home invasions, personally owned firearms are never late.

Guns are one of the most controversial and debated-upon topics in America today. In the Constitution, Americans are given “the right to bear arms,” and many Americans are proud of and believe strongly in that right. Though, that right has been constantly misused. Homicides by gun are at a higher rate in the United States than any other country in the world, mass shootings are at an all time high (many of which have occurred in the past two years alone), and terrorism has been at an all-time high. So, naturally, it is a topic that needs to be discussed. America’s gift to my generation is our rights. One right in particular is the second amendment of the constitution “The Right To Bear Arms”. The second amendment of the bill of rights guarantees the right to own firearms and use them. The second amendment was approved 8 years after the revolutionary war.The second amendment was created December 15 1791. The ten amendments were created so they wouldn’t be put in a situation where they were controlled by a tyrannical government again, and to set the foundation for our newly founded government. The ten amendments were written in independence hall in Philadelphia. The second amendment isn’t just referring to the use of a weapon as a means of hunting but to protect you or many persons if needed.

Gun ownership is embedded in the fabric of America. The United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world with 88 guns per 100 people. This is a staggering amount of firearms in the U.S. which our forefathers would 've never imagined when writing the 2nd Amendment. As the technology, build, and practicality of the hand gun changed over the past couple of hundred years, so has the increased want and demand. Of course, as more people started owning guns, the crime rate and deaths by gun shot up. Basically, it used to be every man for himself. As the government started worrying farther than just setting the rules but actually having people abide by the rules, laws and restrictions were set to try to regulate who owned guns and why they would use them. In 1934, Congress first started regulating the sale of automatic firearms. Not until four years later did the government think to make it federal law to require gun sellers to be licensed and to prohibit felons from purchasing them (Policy Issue p1). Even with rules that shops were supposed to follow, there are loopholes. The problem with some people in the U.S. is they will go buy guns because they have no criminal record, and then sell it to someone who is willing to pay them for the gun. Different laws over the years, still standing and also withdrawn, have spelled out different ideas of regulations, “The Gun Control Act of 1968 regulated imported guns, expanded gun-dealer licensing requirements, and expanded the list of persons not eligible to buy guns to include person convicted of any non-business related felony, minors, persons found to be mentally incompetent, and users of illegal drugs,” (Policy Issue p1). The Atlantic asked its readers about their first memories with guns, and one reader responded with "We lived in southwestern Colorado my first six years of life (1949-1955). My father had a double-barrel shotgun, and a single-barrel one, a .22 rifle, and a “deer rifle.” We ate more venison than beef and almost as much pheasant as chicken.... The polar opposite sides seem to grow further different from one another, with one side supporting and the other opposing gun control laws/actions. Guns and weaponry have always been a major part of the cultures of the world since the beginning of time. For the United States of America, gun use can be traced back to the colonial days, our revolutionary roots. They have helped the United States turn the table specifically in times of dire need such as the Revolutionary War. Since I was a little girl, I remember hunting season; Dad and Katlyn, my sister, would come home to say they killed a deer. Personal Statement I have always been interested in guns. I have always liked to learn about how they work and of course I love to shoot them. My interest in guns started when I was really young. My dad has been a cop for as long as I have been alive. As a child I couldn’t wait for him to get home just so I could watch him put his gun in his safe.

A part of the political ideology that I have is more gun control, with more laws and testing. I grew up surrounded by my dad’s side of the family. None of these family members ever went hunting or had a need to have guns around. However, when my dad was young, my grandfather had a gun. It was not kept in a safe, secure area which caused my uncle to get in a little accident with the gun when he was playing hide and seek in my grandparent’s bedroom. This caused only minor injury, but left lasting impacts on this side of my family. Growing up hearing these stories I never had much thought about it, beside the fact that it was incredible dangerous and thankful we didn’t have any such thing in my house.
