The classes that have been observed and that will be analyzed in this essay are the English Honors and AP English courses which took place at Cerritos High School during the second semester of the academic year 2015/2016. This analysis will focus on the instructor of said classes, David Hind, and on their curriculum, specifically on how the assessment of the students’ learning took place. The instructor of the classes which I observed has a peculiar background. As a matter of fact, during his bachelor’s degree he did not specialize in education, he chose instead to follow the path of a double major in creative writing and philosophy. Moreover, Mr. Hind did not plan or think about becoming a teacher until after he had finished his undergraduate studies. After graduating, he realized that he could forward and improve his career by pursuing a teaching credential. After earning a teaching credential, David Hind found a job as a substitute teacher in various high schools, and he kept doing it for about seven years until he was assigned as a substitute teacher to Cerritos High School, which he loved instantly and where he applied (and was hired) for a more stable position. Mr. Hind does not have a specific background in ESL learning, but he has always found himself teaching to students from a variety …show more content…
Considering that I have not decided yet if I want to be a teacher, or which ages I would like to instruct, this opportunity was helpful and significant. Moreover, it was fascinating to see the same person instruct two separate classes and curriculums; it taught me that if I were one day to find myself in the position of having to teach different courses, I could apply the same method of teaching in all of them by adapting it to the curriculums and to the students’
In preparation for the Advanced Placement Literature and Composition exam, high school students must read many kinds of literature during the year-long course to familiarize themselves with different time periods, movements, philosophies, and genres. Advanced Placement students must learn to think critically, and be ready to find, analyze, and express literary connections through written analysis. The biggest challenge of teaching and learning Advanced Placement English is the difficulty covering the entire scope of literature in two semesters. Twentieth century literature often gets neglected. The pace of the curriculum can also limit
The audience screams encore! The crowd goes wild! The performance, located in the Chamber Theatre in Pittsburgh, was a great hit among all the people in attendance. This journey into the heart of Pittsburgh to see a collection of short stories by famous authors would be a fantastic opportunity and a great chance to learn about literature!
My senior year AP English teacher is well known throughout the school for being the hardest grading teacher there is. An argumentative research paper comprises a significant part of our grade. Although he assigned us the research paper at the beginning of the year, most people procrastinated until it was due in two weeks. I along with handful of people had finished and turned it in two weeks before the due date. My teacher quickly reviewed my essay and said to the class that I had written a good paper. This prompted a wake-up call for the whole entire class. Word spread, and I found myself surrounded by many people who desperately needed my help.
Narrative texts tell a story. This type of writing includes novels, plays, and narrative poems. Narrative texts are usually fictional but can sometimes focus on true events.
This year was by far the most challenging year because of the classes that I chose. AP English Language, AP US History and Algebra 2 were probably the most difficult. Particularly, Algebra 2 was the hardest because I struggled with team tests and individual tests at times which brought my grade down. However, in spite of the hardships, I managed to earn a B which I am quite satisfied with under the circumstances. However, I earned my B because I made an effort to retake tests when needed, study, and complete all of my homework. Furthermore, another class that was a bit difficult was AP English Language, mainly the essays are what labels the class as hard. Time management while writing three essays is definitely one of my weaknesses because
Yo Carmen junior year was hella crazy with the unnecessary projects in French the work in APUSH and don't forget AP English well AP English is the reason why you are reading this so let's get to the letter.
After being in AP US History for almost a full semester now, I have seen myself developing so many new skills and talents that I didn't even know I had or was capable of accomplishing. For instance, I have always been a terrible writer and have struggled with it throughout my whole life. This class has really pushed me to go out of my comfort zone and write more essays than any of my other classes have done in the past. My English class that I am currently taking right now, AP English Language & Composition, has become easier and less stressful as the year has progressed. I know that this is a result of being in APUSH because I have discovered how to write essays more clearly and quickly and no longer stress about them as much as I used to. The essays we do in English are now a breeze and only take me a few minutes to complete compared to what normally would have taken me a couple of hours to complete. Becoming a faster and better writer has helped me with all of my schooling, not just English and History, and I know that the more I practice with writing, the easier it will become.
In our classroom syllabus there are three important things to note which are classroom rules, and expectations, attendance and make up work, and is the way my grade will be determined in English II. Some of these things will don't be heavily affected on my grade it still plays a role during this high school year for me. These rules and expectations might not be the best, but it's what I think the most important things are. My goal in this paper is to explain in more depth about the three important things in our classroom syllabus, also to make you understand the concept of these three important things in the syllabus.
I learned quickly that being an effective teacher is an art that takes time and devotion. Many times, teachers are not provided with the necessary materials in order to maintain the various learning styles in a classroom. It is up to the teacher to create an environment where students can succeed. This is a full time job, meaning that a teacher’s work is not done once they leave the school. A teacher must contribute a significant amount of time and effort in order to see positive results in the school and in his or her own classroom. After observing my cooperating teacher’s strategies and learning more about the profession, I knew that I was going in the right direction with my life. I took a significant amount of knowledge away from this experience and have continued to strive to be the type of educator that I was blessed to work with during this experience. .

I have learned several lessons since I started at Augsburg University in September and more specifically in my “Teaching in a Diverse World” class. Furthermore, I have many hopes for the next three and half years of my college education here at Augsburg. As a future elementary teacher, I found my Augsburg Seminar important and useful in moving forward as a learner.
Numerous students have strived to achieve a higher grade point average and straight A’s in their high school years. They take advanced placement classes, honors classes, or international baccalaureate classes to receive college credit during high school. However, most students have encountered an ordeal experience in advanced classes that change their academic life. They did not expect advanced class to be challenging that exceeds their knowledge. From writing free responses to memorizing complex concepts for multiple choices, some students experience these hardships such as countless restless nights and migraines. Nevertheless, taking advanced placement English is the utmost challenging class I experience in my high school years. While I manage to pass an advanced placement English class with an insight understanding about my life, my writing and reading skills has changed dramatically because of my lack of pace, lack of self-studying and lack of time management.
The team that was surveyed was the Rivercrest High School English professional learning community, heretofore referred to in this paper as the “English PLC.” The purpose of the survey was to collect data with the goal of improving the working relationship of the English PLC, with the ultimate goal of improving the educational opportunities afforded to Rivercrest students.
Despite the rapidly shrinking budgets for arts programs and the growing de-emphasization of English as a relevant field of study, the lessons learned and taught in English classrooms still forms the foundation of learning throughout a student’s academic career. For most American students the English language will serve as the lens through which they view other subjects, and reading comprehension will be the tool that lets them learn from those subjects. Without an adequate foundation in such a core subject, students are simply thrown into the water and “even if they manage to swim, we cannot reasonably expect them to enjoy being in the water” (Brown & Broemmel, 2011). Effective instruction in English and Language Arts, then, should be
The first week of this unit I had a mix of emotions, excitement and stress . The topics covered each week have giving me the opportunity to increase my knowledge in many areas. Having an interest in teaching when I started this course has now grown to having an interest in learning as well. Reflecting on my education as a child has shown me the growth in teaching and our current education system.
