“There is something strange about this house”, Scarlett murmured to herself. Ten days ago, her mother bought a penthouse which costed a huge amount of money. The penthouse had luxurious amenities, high end appliances, finest furniture and luxurious flooring system, etc. By this Scarlett was exited but at the same time specifically her room was an eccentrics of the luxurious penthouse. What is the point of any piece of great literature? Or rather, what is great literature? Some would say that accomplished literature is a way of exceptionally telling a story. However, what is the point of storytelling? In many cases, stories are told for entertainment. However, most stories have a moral or theme conveying an important message about life or how to live it. This is the point of great literature, to convey this message beautifully. Some pieces of great literature are The Story-Teller, by Saki, Geraldine Moore the Poet, by Toni Cade Bambara, and Enemy Territory, by William Melvin Kelley. To understand the themes of great literature, you must also understand how to analyze it. The content
He came in without a word. I was stropping my best razor. And when I recognized him, I started to
“Who killed your parents Jackie? What is going on!”, I yelled as I realized I was so out of the loop. This was all too much for one moment. First the gash on her neck and now I find out her parents are dead. I started to wonder if she was crazy, how could they be dead and she just wanted to run away? Something had to be wrong, this could not be happening.
“Compare/contrast Faulkner’s ‘Dry September’ with ‘A rose for Emily’ in terms of writing style and character presentation.”
Own had been visiting, and he had gone out to collect some herbs to help with Percival’s illness. Percival had just drifted off when he heard the front door smash open. Disoriented, he assumed he was dreaming. However, his mother’s earsplitting screams and the sounds of furniture smashing forced
Later that day, as Scarlett prepared dinner, she heard what sounded like footsteps that were coming from the second floor. She stood there, thinking maybe it was nothing. But, shortly after the footsteps were even louder. It sounded as if somebody was running around up there.
Scarlett travels to Atlanta with her servant, Prissy after the death of Charles to stay with Melanie, her pregnant sister-in-law. While in Atlanta a battle breaks out and the town is in shambles. Melanie goes into labor.. Scarlett sends Prissy to go and get the Doctor who is caring for the wounded soldiers. Prissy tells Scarlett she can’t go out with all of the canons and shooting, but that she can “birth that baby; I birth babies all the time.” Scarlett goes out and returns without the doctor who is unable to come. In the book, Scarlett despises Melanie and wishes she and the baby would both die; while in the movie Scarlett is portrayed as being somewhat concerned for Melanie.
There was a noticeable shift in temperature as the sun began its slow descent toward the horizon, the impending dusk transforming the western sky from faded blue to an artist’s palette of muted pink and orange tones. Across from the aquatic center, Tom and Dennis loitered at a bus stop, their teenage attire helping them to blend into the urban environment. However, despite his outwardly composed appearance, Tom was anything but calm. His eyes scanned the street, searching for any sign of their suspect. Tyrell Carson was an unknown quantity, and therefore, he needed to stay alert and not become too complacent. While Booker had voiced a certain amount of skepticism, Tom knew all too well the dangers of dealing with teenage felons, and he
“AHH!” I screamed backing away from the ghost sitting on my bed staring at me in a creepy way. The ghost looked like a girl that was ripped apart with all the scars and bruises that she had. She stood up and started walking towards me and whispering noncoherent words. As she was walking closer the words became clearer.
Antagonist: Captain Torres Flat and a little stereotypical: The captain does not show his thoughts or feelings. he is a standard, cruel, brutal army officer bad guy, killing the good revolutionaries. However, he shows a little change is telling the barber that “Killing isn’t easy, is it? You can take my word for that.”
The themes of short stories are often relevant to real life? To what extent do you agree with this view?
The short stories “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” and “The Short Happy Life of Francis Mocomber” were both written by world renowned author Ernest Hemingway. The two stories are written completely unrelated to each other; however, both stories have vast similarities in the time and place in which they take place. Hemingway is a writer that is very methodical in his word choices. When reading these two stories a second time the reader finds considerable differences in the writing style the author uses in each story. To demonstrate, three sentences from each story will be compared and contrasted to show the differences in word usage, word connotation, and to find which story is written better. The initial pair
The story portrays rural life in a little Norfolk village, in the 1890s. It describes the visit of a character (maybe spinster) to a woman who has just given birth to a stillborn baby. At first she visits the husband, Mr.Hodd, and she enters his world made up just of poverty: with his eldest boy he’s cutting turnips. The family already has twelve children, and they’re very poor. When the narrator visits Mrs.Hodd’s house, she finds out that the dead baby is not in his little bed, and his little brothers are playing with his corpse, like a doll.
Short Story Assignment It was a good place, twelve year old Caitlin Mathis thought to herself. She'd declined coming there in 2011 when it opened. She wanted to go when she was ready and she wanted to go alone. She was in lower Manhattan, at the World Trade Center Memorial. A couple years ago she'd refused to accompany her teary-eyed mother there for the ten year memorial. She'd refused to stand in the crowd and listen for her father's name. She'd refused to bring a flower. Her mother understood. Or perhaps not, maybe her mother didn't understand; maybe her mother just tolerated her decision and didn't feel like fighting.
