A good leader is someone who can recognize their own faults and someone who can make hard decisions whose outcome don’t always benefit them.In the play Antigone was imprisoned for going against the law of King Creon by burying her brother.Antigone would make a good leader because she possesses those qualities as well as many others. Someone who can recognize their faults would make a good leader.Antigone knew from the start her loyalty to her brother would lead to her death but she was willing to make that sacrifice for justice.Being fully aware of the punishment she proceeded to bury Polyneices.”Our own death would be if we should go against Creon...I shall lie down with him in death” (Antigone, lines 45-57). Antigone saw that her choice
Those who show good leadership share qualities such as strong integrity, consideration of others, and the ability to lead by example. A good leader will know what’s wrong and what’s right. When leading others, they choose the option that is morally acceptable. A good leader has been taught what is right and wrong and doesn’t choose to do what’s wrong when leading others. A good leader thinks of others when making their decisions. They consider what will be best for the group when
Ismene once argued with her sister, “If in defiance of the law we cross a monarch 's will?--weak women, think of that, not framed by nature to contend with men” (Sophocles 49-68). Ismene did not realize then that she was speaking with of one of the greatest heroines and monarchs of modern feminism in all of literature. If any woman today dared utter the words above, they would face immediate contention from the herd of strong-willed females belonging to the 21st century. In Antigone, we see Antigone press forward with conviction in pursuit of justice and truth. She is met with great opposition, largely due to her gender. In the past 2500 years, society has evolved in monumental ways.
A good leader encompasses both confidence and courage, showing care for their team members and offering support whenever needed. They inspire others through their actions and words, creating a positive and motivating environment for everyone involved. In the story called The Odyssey the main character, Odysseus gets off-course in his travels and tries to head back home with his men. In the course of his journey, however, he meets with some trouble from the gods and people who oppose him along the way. Odysseus was a good leader because he cared about his men, and protected his force in battle.
Traits of Leadership A true leader is someone who would sacrifice their life for someone else, someone who would do whatever it takes to make the right decision. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus is an example of a great leader. He is brave and wise, he exemplifies these traits multiple times throughout this poem.
Many things can make or break a leader. Whether it's your mom, dad, teacher, or coach, they all share similar qualities that make us classify them as leaders in the first place. Leaders, such as Odysseus, can be confident and brave, but having a brain poisoned with selfishness and taking advantage of your followers can alter people's opinions on them. Leadership is not controlling, but it is helping people achieve a goal as a whole.
To Antigone, the “greater good” went beyond just simply doing what she thought was right for others and not herself, but rather acting upon what she believed was expected of her from the gods. When Creon issued the order that her brother would not be buried because he was a “traitor”, Antigone knew the consequences that would befall her and her family if she did not complete the proper burial that the gods desired. She felt as if Creon had overstepped spiritual jurisdiction, and she chose to act upon godly authority before earthly desires. Antigone demonstrated the “greater good” by sacrificing her life in order to please a higher
In Homer's the Odyssey, Odysseus shows that he has the characteristics of an effective leader by being brave against the gods and the cyclops and by doing this he inspires his crew, and pushing through the hardships, like the cyclops and the gods declining him access to make it home along with Penelope testing his mind after the massacre of the suitors. Also, he is very manipulative and able to trick his enemies to find his way home. So in my opinion this sets a great example for being an effective leader like Odysseus.
Another aspect of a good leader is intelligence, because it shows that you can make the right decision at the right time. This second quality is exemplified in The Odyssey when examining this statement, “My name is nobody”. Nobody is my name”. According to the quote, Odysseus is an example of a good leader with this quality because of his intelligence he was able to trick the cyclops into thinking that nobody was his name, so when he stabbed the cyclops in the eye, the cyclops yelled “nobody is stabbing”. That sort of trickery allowed him and his men to escape from the cyclops.
The character that has taught me most about how to be an effective leader is Creon, king of Thebes, from the play Antigone. Unfortunately, it wasn’t because of his outstanding and effective leadership qualities that offered me insight, but rather it was the skills in which he lacked as a leader. Such as, compassion, understanding, communication, and humility, just to name a few. His character helped me identify and think more in-depth about the most important attributes an effective leader should own.
“You will remember what things I suffer, and at what men's hands, because I would not transgress the laws of heaven.Come:let us wait no longer.” (Antigone)
What qualities determine if someone is a leader? I consider myself a leader not because of superior grades or high intellect but because I try to lend a helping hand whenever possible. I set an example for my peers by devoting myself to the school and offering my time for the benefits of others.
Antigone, a Greek a tragedy, is the third of the Three Theban Plays by Sophocles. Throughout the play, readers are introduced to few, but intriguing characters, one being the protagonist of the play, Antigone. Antigone is the tragic hero of Antigone; she presents recognition of the gods, exemplifies good virtues, and possess a fatal flaw, or hamartia. A tragic hero is a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat.
Sophocles, a great tragedian, was the one who gave Greek tragedies their traditional form. An important part of traditional Greek tragedies is the presence of a tragic hero. All tragic heroes should have the characteristics of rank, a tragic flaw, a downfall, and a recognition of mistakes. The seemingly tragic hero is Antigone. She wants to bury her brother Polyneices even though this would be going against Creon, who is her uncle and the king. When Antigone buries Polyneices Creon sentences her to death because of it. In Antigone by Sophocles the tragic hero is not Antigone because she only meets the characteristic of a tragic flaw, hers being pride, but doesn 't meet the other three characteristics of a
Sophocles’ purpose for writing about leadership in Antigone was to demonstrate that as a leader they must know what their true values, as well as, when to prioritize them, because they need to do what they think is best for the city. This is shown when Greon is introducing himself as the one who possesses the throne and the power along with it. He explains how you cannot know a man completely until the experience and what his standards are such as not putting a friend
In the drama Antigone, Sophocles considers the source of authority and power in society. When King Creon makes a law that forbids the burial of Antigone's brother, Polynices, she ignores the king’s authority, risks her life, and buries her brother out of loyalty to the gods. The situation leads to a conflict among the people of Thebes, Antigone, and Haemon. They must decide where their loyalty lies, and whose authority should take precedence, that of the king or that of the gods. While a number of views about the role of authority and power are expressed through characters such as Creon, Antigone, and Haemon, the drama seems to support the view that authority does not rest only with one person.
