Overall, in my opinion, my Anthem essay showed my creative side when it comes to writing. It also showed some risk taking as I wrote in a style that I’ve never written before, I attempted to sound “passionate” rather than “passive” through new and complex vocabulary. Despite it being my first essay of the year, I felt it was still an excellent essay, however, I’ve noticed flaws such as not explaining my quotations and claim very well, and some minor grammar and wordiness issues. Compared to my freshmen essays, my Anthem essay definitely showed substantial growth. It was not my best work, though, I struggled a great deal in trying to explain how my textual evidence related to my thesis.
Compared to my other required writings, my Anthem essay
It is part of the human condition to have a tendency of going through drastic measures to obtain an ideology that has been accepted as a “natural fact.” Through Anthem, Ayn Rand warned of the dangers of blindly and unquestionably following an ideology; the dangers to society that loyalty to a belief system pose are strict limitations on personal comforts, lack of individualism, and the formation of an irrational government.
The ethical issue Anthem faced is that employees felt they were betrayed and that Anthem violated their relationship which was built upon promises. This happened as result of a company decision and its communication thereafter.
No “I” and no “you”, just “we.” How could we live in a world like that? Ayn Rand’s book shows a twisted and different form of collectivism. Everyone is told what they have to do for the rest of their future. Children are not even allowed to know who their parents are and are never given the chance to meet them. Although, only one shines in the society that no one else may see until now. Equality finds it difficult to find individualism in his life and in the rules of his society. Equality eventually finds individualism in escaping, to a haven of his own, from his odd society. Equality can then find peace with himself and can live in a more individualistic life in his newfound house with “The Golden One” in the forbidden and
Keeping it short and simple, J.P. Sartre best summed it up as “we are our choices.” Juxtaposition of Anthem, the dystopian novella by Ayn Rand, “Don’t! The secret of self-control,” the nonfiction article by Jonah Lehrer, and “Who Holds the Clicker?,” the nonfiction article by Lauren Slater proves this statement. Anthem follows a young man named Equality who breaks free from his collectivist society based on fear and conformity through a chain of decisions. “Don’t!
Many things in the society of Anthem had not been invented or discovered yet. Candles had been just discovered and electricity was not a thought of as of yet. Books were scrolls. Also, there was no running water. All of this was already invented they were just lost during the time of the Great Rebirth. The developments that led to the loss of technology was when during the Great Rebirth, people began teaching the importance of equality and brotherhood. The Great Rebirth was a time in which the society learned that they cannot be equal if they compete to be greater than there brothers. Without competition, the society lost all reason to be better than one another, which led to the lost of the creation of new things. When everyone is equal,

My thesis statement, it is the words that people say that gives you strength when you are at your crossroad. And today I stand, I run, and I walk for those who cannot. But let me pause for my essay because I will be derelant In my duties and negligent in task if I didn’t say to my sister in the audience who last year got a stroke and somehow got through all of that and now she’s reaping heaven on her employees. Big sister you are my warrior. Give hear a hand, I might not have a ride home today. Now, to the body of the essay. When I came to Cambridge... You all know how essays go. We are going to get to that. When I came to Cambridge College I was nervous, but they accept me for who I was, a 24 year old military veteran.
The dystopian novella, Anthem, is set in an age in which every aspect of life is controlled by oppressive leaders. In this society, everyone was deemed equal to each other, meaning no new ideas were allowed and the past could not be discussed. Individuals are told they exist only for the sake of serving society and have no other purpose. Strict rules were put in place involving everyone’s daily lives, their partners, and even when they were allowed to smile. The goal of this controlling environment is to be completely free from conflict and maintain peace and order by giving citizens little freedom.
| 1. Why is the character or act condemned in Anthem? 2. Should it be condemned? Explain why/why not.
Life has fared well since Gaea and I have lived in this house. There are now others in houses surrounding us. These are my friends that I returned to rescue, International 4-8818 being one of them. He is now called Apollo. We are happy here, all of us. The others are learning, albeit rather slowly, yet they learn to say I instead of we. It is my hope that, before my first child is born, they will all say I so that he or she may only know this and not the cursed we.
“It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil… We have broken the laws” (17). Thus begins Anthem by Ayn Rand, a novella about a future collectivist society and a man named Equality 7-2521. Though the story takes place in the future, all technology that came after candles and glass has been taken away. The word “I” has ceased to exist in anyone’s vocabulary. Every person must agree on everything and feel like everyone else. To accomplish ‘cleansing’ the evils of mankind, society lead its people to believe that nothing can be done independently. The story is told through the eyes of Equality as he purposely defies the laws
The first essay was a persuasive essay on the right for gays/lesbians to marry. I believe that my first essay could have been a lot better. I think if I had based my paper on the topic sentences that I put together in the outline my paper would have been a lot better than
The story of Anthem takes place in dystopian future in which freedom and human rights have been obliterated. Wow, I made it through the second hardest class I am taking my sophomore year, this being a close second to College Prep Writing (next semester’s class). This class has truly changed me in the most interesting ways possible. I actually have found some maturity in writing, something that I didn’t even know I needed until I learned it. This essay compared to my intro essay will most likely look like a Harvard paper versus a community college course high school student’s paper. But that is because this essay has changed me in the most positive way possible. Thank you very much for the opportunity to take this course, and I do strongly suggest it to other students.
The third essay that was written was a critical argument. This assignment required me to choose two articles from the school library and write an essay stating my opinion on a particular subject. The topic I chose was medical marijuana. This topic was interesting to me, so it made the assignment fun. On this essay I had fewer mistakes than in previous essays. I continued to struggle with APA citation and the use of commas. When I looked at the feedback from this essay, it gave me confidence. I felt that I was learning and my writing skills were improving.
