Cosmetics are used to enhance one’s natural beauty, but may come at the cost of a life. Advertisers cater to the idea of seeking perfection through beauty. In the process of feeding this hunger for perfection, we are also responsible for the demise of innocent animals that are used as disposable lab experiments. Approximately 100 million animals die each year after enduring a long, torturous process of animal testing in the cosmetic industry. In U.K. London on April 24th, 2012, the brand Lush took a stance against animal testing. Lush showcased a public demonstration of the violent procedures animals face. The brand reenacted a laboratory experiment with an animal activist, who volunteered in place of the animal. Although some believed it was a drastic approach, it gained media attention. Majority of the public responded well and Lush was able to gain a lot of petition signatures to fight animal testing. Animal activists thought it was a brilliant concept. In their defense, it was a way to bring about awareness in a terrifying, yet impactful way. As a firm believer in animal rights, animals deserve someone to be their voice when they cannot defend themselves. Animals such as dogs and rabbits are forced to confined cages and isolation before enduring unethical methods of torture. Methods include poisoning, drilling through bones, burning, and more.
