You can’t choose when and what you eat, how you will spend your time, whether or not you will have a partner and children, or who that partner will be. You can’t even decide when the lights go on and off. (Cruelty to Animals in Laboratories.)” This is the horrifying reality that animals used in animal experiments have to face. Animal experimentation is the use of animals in scientific research. Animals help scientists learn more about diseases that occur in humans and animals. The Pew Research Center poll has found that fifty percent of United States adults oppose the use of animals in scientific research, and the other surveys suggest that the shrinking group that does accept animal experimentation does so because they believe it to be necessary for medical progress (What is Animal Testing?). There are also several other claims for animal experimentation. One claim is that there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living system, but that is a fallacy because there are several other successful scientific methods to test on a living system. More arguments for animal experimentation is that animals do not have rights so it is acceptable to experiment on them, religious traditions allow for human dominion over animals, and that health organizations in the United States endorse animal testing (Animal Testing). All of these statements claim human superiority and rhetorically is an appeal to authority. Animals actually do have cognitive ability and feelings like humans do, so they should be given the same ethical rights that we have. Animal rights activists use logos and pathos to convey their side of the argument. Logos is used to prove that performing on animals is not better than performing on animals. We could give humans microdoses of a certain medication and get the same or more accurate results. Pathos is used with pictures of animals being
