My desire to study medicine stems from my determination to make a difference to people's lives, where I am the decision maker. Medicine would allow me to integrate my academic interest for science into a public sector framework where I can meet different people everyday. My passion for science has been developed by learning different modules at school like 'Health and Disease' in Biology. Seeing how just a small deposit of plaque in the coronary artery walls could lead to atherosclerosis and eventually death if untreated, has highlighted the subtle nature of the body to me.
To pursue my interest in medicine I spent time shadowing doctors at Ananthapuri Hospital, India. Witnessing an angioplasty emphasised the significance of team work, as when they inserted the catheter via the femoral artery in the groin, there was a problem inflating the balloon. I was allocated the position of secretary where effective communication and organisation were of paramount importance. This scheme has enabled me to organise and prioritise my time better. It also stressed what I had observed during the angioplasty; team success depends on individuals being delegated tasks in relation to their strengths and weaknesses.
Work experience at Grange Park School provided me with a wealth of experience to offer the medical profession. For instance, mentoring children supplied me with the essential skills of persistence and patience. Seeing changes in the ability of the child emphasised that my future definitely lies in the medical profession. When a child struggled, I adopted the sympathetic tone I had observed at the hospital and found it to encourage them to try again. Being a prefect at school allowed me to exercise my leadership skills and the transferable skills that I learnt at Grange
