The ancient land of Canaan, located in the Middle East, has been promised to many different people, and in result, has been ruthlessly fought over. After the Holocaust, Great Britain split the land in half, giving one part to the Palestinians who had lived there for many years, and the rest to the Israelis who had been there since the beginning of monotheistic religion. The boundaries have constantly changed, due to constant fighting and wars. The Israelis believe the land is rightfully theirs, because it was the birthplace of their religion. The Proclamation of the State of Israel says, “The land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here their spiritual, religious and national identity was formed (Document 12)”. The Israelis
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the one of the world’s oldest conflicts, and it is still an ongoing problem in the world. Zionists and Arabs: two groups with conflicting beliefs who both claim Israel as their own. In wake of the Holocaust the U.N decided to gift the Jews a homeland for the lives lost in the genocide. In 1947, the U.N Partition divided the land of Israel (Historic Palestine) into two separate states: Arab and Jewish. Since then, the state of Israel has been the center of conflict between the Arabs and the Zionists. As time passed the Zionists gained more land from winning the Six-Day War, and consequently the Palestinians had to live as refugees in other Arab countries. Additionally, more than 75% of the land belonged to
When asking someone there first thought about Israel, each person will have their own version of what they believe that it is. One might say that it is the land of the Jews, while others say that it is Jesus Christ’s birthplace. The excerpts from My Promised Land by Ari Shavit capture the true essence of what Israel really is.
For days, months, years, even decades, the conflict between Israel and Palestine has raged, leaving thousands of dead in its wake. The Jewish people once lived in the land now known as either Israel or Palestine. They were forced out in 70 A.D. in what is now known as the Jewish Diaspora after attempting a revolt against the Romans that, in hindsight, was probably not a good idea.
To make oneself the hero is to be able to successfully glamorize oneself while simultaneously spoiling the public’s opinion of one’s opposition. In doing so, one can say just about anything and have it taken seriously. In The New English Canaan by Thomas Morton, the author uses allusion, invective, and strong diction to discredit the work of the Puritans in the eyes of the King.
were chosen by God to set up a state of Israel where they could not be
The Land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here their spiritual, religious and national identity was formed. Here they achieved independence and created a culture of national and universal significance. Here they wrote and gave the Bible to the world. Exiled from the Land of Israel, the Jewish people remained faithful to it in all the countries of their dispersion. The Jewish Nation had been wandering around deserts, were once slaves in Egypt, but didn’t have any land to their name; in 1948 the Jewish Nation finally had a place to call home, known as Israel to this day. Ever since then having Israel has made it safer for the Jews to live in from having immigrants move to the land which allows all Jews who want to connect back
The Arab-Israeli Conflict, and the struggle for a religious homeland, is a complex and somewhat mystified conflict. The tensions between the Palestinian and Israeli peoples can be traced back to Biblical times, when Abraham allocated for one of his sons, Isaac, to lay claim to Judea or modern day Israel. Muslims claimed that the elder son Ishmael had been allocated the region in the Qur’an. Although many historians believe otherwise, these claims are still the more popular historical context amongst monotheistic practitioners.
The Declaration of Independence ‘notified the world that the Land of Israel was the historic birthplace of the Jewish people, that the Zionist movement was the testimony to the role Palestine had fulfilled in Jewish history and religion, that the Balfour Declaration, the United Nations Partition Resolution, the sacrifice of the Zionist pioneers, and the torment suffered by Jews in recent years—all had laid the moral and legal foundations for the new state.’ The declaration emphasized the importance of the land of Israel to the Jewish people, and it recognized their constant struggle to get it back since being exiled from their homeland. Later on the 14th of May, the British Mandate expired and both the United States and the Soviet Union recognized Israel as a state. This was especially fortunate for Israel, because two of the biggest powers in the world acknowledged the state. Even though the Jews deserved to have a state of their own and finally received it, the fighting was not over. The day after Israel gained independence, it was attacked by Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq marking the start of the 1948 Arab-Israeli
Israel declared sovereignty as a state on May 14 1948. Two things happened that day that continue to shape this young nation of an ancient people. Being a previous British Colony, the British Army withdrew early in the day and within hours the fighting between the Arab and Jewish people had begun that continues to this day. Secondly, by the end of the night an announcement made by the United States meant that we had officially recognized the nation of Israel and her government beginning of our two countries great relationship. The Jewish nation’s perseverance is attributed to their tenacity to retain their culture and has guided them to survive while enemies bordered on all sides and led them to develop some of the most sophisticated defense
On November 29th, 1947 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for the establishmen tof a Jewish State in Israel. This recognition by the General Assembly, combined with that of the United States and the USSR, paved the way for David Ben- Gurion to anounce the formation fo the Israeli State on May 14th, 1948. The Israeli State arose out of the zulmination of the Zionist movement to create the Jewish State arising at a time of the Nazi holocaust, which was the latest in a historical series of anti- Jewish actions. Israel was explicitly established to be “A Jewish State in Eretz- Israel” with implict religious and cultural protection for those who were defined as Jewish. However, as the case study of the Beta Israel community
However, John Oetzel, describes culture as, “a learned system of meanings that fosters a particular sense identity-hood and community-hood among its group members.” (2008). Moreover, adding the traditions, values, and norms that incorporated within the society, reaches for further understanding the bases of the culture described. As previously told, the country of Israel dates back from a historical background, including of a multitude of cultural and religious backgrounds. On May 14th, 1948, Israel gained independence from the from the earlier British parliament, which resulted in a conflict that still exists through the region. According to the Office of Historian, the adoption of Resolution 181, caused a split of land between Israeli and Palestinians, leading to a major conflict due to control of religious land of Jerusalem (The Arab-Israeli War 1948, 2018). The cultural development through history
In 1947 the UN voted on the partition of Palestine. This granted a Jewish state of Israel and a separate state of Palestine. Zionists were mostly happy with this partition because it created a newly founded Jewish state. However, many Palestinians were opposed to this partition because it stripped them of land they believed was rightfully theirs. In response, Palestine waged war against Israel in 1948. During this war many Arab civilians were displaced from their cities and became refugees in neighboring countries. There are two major schools of thought regarding the interpretation of the problem and events that took place. Zionist Historians are a group of historians who interpret and explain these events in a pro Israel way ugh hats
The nation of Israel was originally a nation of nomadic people who were isolated and oppressed. After the horrific events of the Holocaust some Jewish people made homes in Israel. The people who made their homes came to be known as Israelites. They were given this name because the nation was named after Israel who was originally known as Jacob (Fisher, 2005). The nation of Israel has always been in a state of disorder and confusion, and in 1947 the United Nations gave Israel to the Jewish people who declared it an independent state in 1948. Israel’s Arabic neighbors did not support this decision and war followed. Battles are still being fought today. Tension also exists within the Jewish community in Israel. There have been many Jewish people who have settled in Israel. These settlers have diverse backgrounds. Some are orthodox and some are not which can bring tension. Even
For such a young and geographically small country, Israel boasts one of the most complicated geopolitical situations in the world today. Situated in Western Asia on the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, it shares borders with Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan, the Palestinian territories, which include the West Bank and Gaza, Egypt, and the Red Sea. The Jewish state was created at the conclusion of World War II by the United Nations when the British Mandate expired and the State of Israel was officially established on May 14, 1948, but it lacked clear borders in an area where tensions between Arabs and Jews had already been in existence for thousands of years. Even though Israel is "The Jewish State", demographics for 2014 show the population to be 75% Jewish and 24% Arab. This Arab population, mostly Palestinian, occupies what is known as the West Bank, which is controlled by the Palestinian Authority, but the Israeli Occupation and Military officially controls it and the Gaza Strip. The two groups struggle over how to divide the land, who should be allowed to live there, and who should be in control has led to the longest military occupation in history and one of the world 's largest geopolitical conflicts.
The conflict between the Palestinians (Arabs) and Israelis (Jews) was over land, a place where they can call home. The ending of World War I (WWI), the land was known as the Palestine land. Three monotheistic religion called the land the holy land. In 1948 to 1949, the land was divided into three: the State of Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. The Israelis claim ownership of the land because in the bible Abraham and his descenders was promise the land. The Palestine claim ownership of the land due to that fact that they have been living there for hundreds of years. The Palestine reject the theory of the biblical claims but if they were to entertain the idea, Abraham son Ishmael, is the forefather of the Arabs which makes the land promised to them too.
