Usually you would hear of hundreds of people being killed by terrorist attacks, airplane crashes, or war, but in Ancient China, the Great Wall of China killed hundreds of peasants in the makings through forced labor. The benefits didn't outweigh the costs because through the makings of the wall, it separated families, killed soldiers, and families/ loved ones sacrificed their lives and lifestyle. Starting off, many soldiers were killed in war. In document E from our DBQ packet stated that tens of thousands of soldiers died from hunger, sickness, and hear and.or cold. Stated in document E, soldiers were ordered/ forced to work on the Great Wall for 2 - 5 years. This was not a good idea because these soldiers were missing time from their family. A better idea would have been to have shifts with the soldiers so everyone would be able to see their families. Finally, poor families sacrificed their lives and lifestyle. 300,000 people were forced/ ordered to build and guard the Great Wall until the wall was completely finished. These people were guarding the wall, so they most likely died from hunger, sickness, and even war. The DBQ packet stated the bodies lay/ are buried near the Great Wall because the wall costed more than 1 million people's lives during the makings. However, others who think that the benefits did outweigh the costs might not take this statement seriously.
