If I Stay Choices are big parts of people's life. They decide on everything and it is not always easy. In the story if i stay for Mia she has to make the hardest choice of her life. Mia is faced with the most important decision she will ever have to make whether to give in to her injuries or fight to stay alive. The author Gayle Forman uses techniques such as revinling the actions, inner thinking , and tone to set support the theme: That not everything in life is easy. She reveals the action because there was a car crash and her Mom, Dad, and little brother all died and she had to decide whether or not to stay. She says “ If I stay. If I live. In the short story “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” by Flanenry O’Conner, a main character struggles trying to find himself and his redemtion in society. O’Conner developes three characters, a woman, her daughter, and a man, Shiftlet. The three characters are standing outside the woman’s house. Shiftlet is watching the automobile while the woman is trying to marry off her daughter. They finally come to a compromise and Shiftlet is given the option to stay with her and make the write decision or leave her and make the wrong. He choses the wrong decision and abandons her. The reader is not given what happens to Shiftlet, and is left wondering how he ends up. An important theme of the story that O’Conner developes focuses in on the idea of redemption and that humans have the option to save themselves. The author claims you are always given the option to choose good or bad, resulting in concequenses. The second theme shown throughout the novel is the power and strength of female community. When Lily escapes to the Boatwright house she meets the three strong and independent Boatwright sisters. It is there where Lily grows from a scared little girl to not only a stronger and more independent young lady but a more considerate and accepting human being, she grows into a better person. And it was Rosaleen’s strength to stand up to the racist men that gave Lily the strength to runaway from T. Ray and escape Sylvan. As she grows and learns the truth about her mother she accepts her flaws and as she matures and realizes why T. Ray is the way he is, because he is so hurt from Lily’s mother leaving him she accepts his flaws as well and knows that he really does love her. It is the strength of these women that gave Lily the strength and courage to grow and accept.
