Mia:
Caring: They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service and act to make a difference in the lives of others and to the environment.
Mia the main protagonist of this novel is a caring character this can be conveyed through the following quote, “Teddy is never going to graduate from T-ball to baseball. He’s never going to grow a moustache. Never going to get into fist fights or shoot a deer or fall in love. It is unfair If one of us should have been left behind if one of us should be given an opportunity. It should have been him.”
This quotation conveys the idea that she cares for other people for her family, especially revealing her love for her brother Teddy.

“ There are like twenty people in that waiting room right now. Some of them are related to you. Some of them are not. But we’re all your family” “ You still have a family.”
Kim is Mia’s best friend and companion they have been friends since they were children from the start of the novel to the end their relationship has strengthened. Kim shows that she caring towards Mia by convincing Mia that even though her family has passed away she still has her friends and relatives they are still her family. This helps to convey that Kim is a loving and caring person, especially to Mia. Knowledgeable: We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.
Although this character is not explored widely in this novel I choose to use this character as it shows characteristics of being a knowledgeable character in this novel.‘ The following week, our English teacher paired us together for a joint oral discussion of To Kill A Mockingbird~ “ I read this book at my old school,” “ The racism thing is kind of obvious. I think the bigger thing is people’s goodness. Are they naturally good and turned bad by stuff like racism or are we naturally bad and need to work hard not to be”’ The dialogue within this quote conveys in detail Kim’s perspective of the novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’. She then talks about her opinion of how racism is conveyed in the novel, she is educated very well as this is also revealed throughout the
Anne-Marie is one of the most underrated characters in the novel Hag-Seed and yet her major importance shines through. In Anne-Marie’s own words, Miranda was not just a rag doll just lying around with her legs open with a sign that says rape me. She was strong, intelligent, and held her own on an island filled to the brim with men. Anne-Marie, she started off as a child actress and moved on to ballet and eventually a shabby job at a café. Anne-Marie is also one of the few women in the book and the only one that goes into the prison.
Starting off with Atticus Finch, I think he was one of the nicest characters in the book. He acted the same at work and at home. He did not judge people, and he did not like to harm people. When he was chosen to be Tom’s lawyer, he said to Scout “...every lawyer gets at least one case in his lifetime that affects him personally. This one’s mine, I guess.” (Page 101). He represents a mockingbird because all he did was defend a black person in court, and received hate for it.
“Human beings are poor examiners, subject to superstition, bias, prejudice, and a profound tendency to see what they want to see rather than what is really there” ~ Scott Peck. Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird abounds with the injustice produced by social, gender, and racial prejudice. The setting of the book takes place in the 1930s, where racism is a big deal in society. In the novel Harper Lee uses a mockingbird as an analogy to the characters. The Mockingbird is a symbol for Three Characters in the book, Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley. The people of Maycomb only know Boo Radley and Tom Robinson by what others say about them. These Characters are then characterized by other people 's viewpoints. In the novel there are many themes that are adjacent to our lives, the one that is found in To Kill A Mockingbird is Human Conflict comes from the inability for one to understand another. “ You never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (39)
In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, characters are used to demonstrate the misjudgement by others in society. Arthur “Boo” Radley is thought of in a very dimensional and untrue way by the children. Dolphus Raymond makes unnoticed compromises in order to live in the community which he does not fit in. Tom Robinson is a kind and humble African American, who is misjudged by society due to the colour of his skin. Lee uses characterisation to show readers how society judges others.
Our world suffers with many issues such as racism, sexism, hate and prejudice, and society needs people that are strong enough to take a stand. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is displayed in several different forms, especially through three courageous characters. Lee introduces the concept of honorable courage through Mrs. Dubose, a woman who demonstrates that real courage comes from within. Another brave character in the novel is Tom Robinson. He shows everyone how difficult it is for a black man to be both honest and kind no matter the situation. The most courageous person would be Atticus Finch. Atticus is an important character that fits into his own definition of what "real courage" is and demonstrates it in numerous ways throughout the novel, as he goes against most people’s beliefs in order to do what he believes is morally right. Through these three brave characters, Lee tries to reshape people's stereotypical view of courage.
The characters Bob Ewell, Miss Gate’s, and Miss Dubose demonstrate the tragedies and horrors associated with racism and prejudice behaviors through the utilization of their actions, beliefs, opinions, and thoughts throughout the novel To Kill A Mockingbird. Bob Ewell demonstrates the tragedies and horrors associated with racism and prejudice behaviors through his arrogant attitude towards the African American society of Maycomb, his treatment and harassment of everyone after the trial to avenge his high pride in himself, and the consequences associated with his racist and prejudice behaviors throughout the novel. Bob Ewell looks down on the African American society of Maycomb and feels as if he can take full advantage of them since he is of
“I realize now that dying is easy, living is hard” (Forman 175). This quote is so much more than just words; it represents a choice, Mia’s choice between life and death. Stuck outside her lifeless body, Mia is presented with the choice of staying and living with what she has left on this earth, or leaving and joining her deceased family. With her loved ones watching over her, Mia reminisces about her life and the possibilities of her future, as she is faced with this powerful decision. In the end, Mia decides she has so much more reasons to stay, than leave.
Many people have experienced racism or prejudice at least once in their lives, but they are not aware of the different ways it could take place. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates how racism and prejudice presents itself in many ways in the town of Maycomb. This is shown in the characters Tom Robinson, Walter Cunningham Jr, and Scout, who are all victims of prejudice or racism. These characters are subjected to all kinds of prejudice and from all kinds of people, sometimes so much it would change their lives.
One strong character within To Kill A Mockingbird is Atticus Finch, a lawyer and father in Maycomb. He fights against racism in the
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, describes a story of prejudice back in the old times where there were stereotypes against women, the uneducated, the poor, the “outcasts” and of course the center of the plot, the black people. But despite the dark times, there were still people who were a beacon of hope to our current generation. There were people who would be able to rise above the prejudice, see beyond the stereotypes and look at the people just as a human being. Some strong examples of people rising above the hate were Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and Jem Finch. Through their experiences in the book, they were able to distinguish what people truly are as a human being instead of looking at them through a stereotype.
Clearly, then, throughout To Kill a Mockingbird there has been many ubiquitous effects of racism on the citizens of Macomb. The lives of many characters in this novel have been disrupted and deeply affected in many ways because of racism. Throughout this novel, Harper Lee shows that one's race and skin color can change other's opinions about a character, without knowing anything about the character. In the end, no matter the color of your skin or what race you are, we are all equal, and we should all be treated
In the country town of Maycomb, people were easily influenced so prejudice was shown by most. The citizens knew that the colour of your skin determined your place in life and that Negroes were to be treated differently. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there was only one true character that portrayed the true essence of tolerance. Atticus Finch stood on his own two feet, and never formed an opinion unless he had prior knowledge on the particular person or situation. Throughout the entirety of this novel, it was Atticus alone who not only was tolerant, but set an exemplarily example to his children, and the town, of how knowing before judging is not only important, but vital to society. “First of all…if you can learn a simple trick Scout, you’ll get along better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person till you consider things from his point of view…until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (p.33). This is a perfect example of how Atticus passes on his knowledge to his children, and educates them on how respect
Mia is the central character of this story. She is kind, musically gifted, and quiet. She cares a lot about her family and friends and also, she possesses a deep love for her cello. Mia
One of the most interesting characters in To Kill a Mockingbird is Atticus Finch. He is a good representation of someone that is strong while keeping in mind other’s feelings. Throughout the book Atticus is show as a kind man who really cares for the people of Maycomb County. However, he still demands justice when someone is treated unfairly, even for the likes of a black man. Atticus Finch is very influential and yet still listens to what needs to be heard. In “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee portrays Atticus as a man who values justice, wiseness and fair-mindedness.
In Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, one of the most prominent themes used in the novel is the action of intolerance and the affect it has on all people. The theme of intolerance is fully explored in the case of Tom Robinson and the underlying racism shown in the treatment of him. Intolerance is met by all three main characters, Scout, Atticus and Jem but is experience by many of the other supporting characters. There was no one kind of intolerant person; they all came from different background, which is testimony to the point of the book ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of views.’ This quote shows that you have no idea why a person does what they do until you experience things from their
