Part 1 Summary: The novel “Sophia’s War” written by Avi is about a girl name Sophia Calderwood and the Revolutionary War that is happening between the American and the British. When the British take over New York, the Americans aren’t treated so well. The British burned the most beautiful parts of the city and now those parts had become less beautiful. People become poor and were now keeping distance from one another. In New York misery and despair was everywhere. With this in mind, taken prisoner by the British was William but it wasn’t just William but other Americans that were with him too. No one was able to visit the prisoners, being that, since Sophia and her father had a job, they had enough money to bribe the soldiers to let them see

Throughout the story “Sophia’s War,” the main character Sophia took part in many major life changing and life threatening events. It all started at the beginning of the book when Sophia witnessed Nathan Hale being hung from an apple tree by“loyalists. ”The event did have a huge effect, giving the fact that Sophia began to cry and yell “have mercy. ”Sophia said to herself “His neck must have broken for he died in an instant,”I believe the reaction and future events could have been changed if Nathan Hale would have been strangled to death.

In the book “Sophia’s War” by Avi, a character named Sophia Calderwood who was experienced unfortunate events and many extraordinary adventures. The following plot introduced Manhattan during the American Revolutionary War in the year 1776-1780. At the time, New York was being held under British invasions as well as strict circumstances/punishments. Sophia’s family began having a lifestyle in New York until an event Sophia’s former 12 year-old self witnessed along with her mother, that changed both their lives forever. For instance, Sophia’s emotions such as being horrified soon fled by the hanging of Nathan Hale for being a spy.

The Fifth of March is a work of historical fiction which takes place in the city of Boston from the year 1768 to the year 1772. Rachel Marsh, the main character is a 13 year old girl who is an indentured servant to John and Abigail Adams. Among the interesting and diverse cast of characters is Uncle Eb, Rachel’s abusive and greedy uncle, and Matthew Kilroy, who is the British soldier whom Rachel loves. In the story, Rachel wants to find herself a place in the world as the growing thirst for revolution spreads among the American people, eventually leading to the Boston Massacre. Rachel finds herself caught in the middle of the revolution, with her patriot friends and Matthew, who kills a man during the massacre. Through her many struggles, in the end, Rachel becomes “A plain American, a true American.” She then leaves for Philadelphia,leaving her dowry behind, showing that she is independent and free of the malicious Uncle Eb.

The book, Sophia’s War, is filled with life changing events that helped shape the complicated life of the main character, Sophia. The first event that helped shape the life and character of Sophia in this book is the hanging of Nathan Hale. This was a life changing event because it proved to the 12-year-old girl the brutality and cruelty of the British government and officers. This event also helped recruit Mr. Townsend as a spy for George Washington and the Patriots. Sophia’s War proves this when Avi says, “Later, we learned that the young man’s name was Nathan Hale. The American Revolution was a time of great victory and great sacrifice for all of those who called the United States of America their home. And while for many this emergence of freedom was a reason to celebrate, the fight continued for others as they were still not free.

In America, they were several wars between the France and Britain. The first two wars named King William’s War and Queen Anne’s War were characterized by primitive guerilla warfare than an army. Both European countries recruited whatever Indian allies to fight in the combat in order to success. Another important confrontation was called King George’s War in which France allied with the Spanish. However, the British captured the French Fortress of Louisbourg and finally commanded the St. Lawrence River. A peace treaty was passed in which the fortress was gave back to the French allowing them to clung to the vasts holdings in North America.

The male population of the colonists in New England drastically fell. The war also created a fear of the frontier among the colonists, which slowed down territorial expansion. The Native Americans also suffered major loss of life and lost their land, which was their main source of food and money. The economic impact that the war led to were that colonists had to pay crushing taxes for the colonies, causing a decrease in per-capita income. She is very familiar and used to the unexpected due to her daughter Carramaes early marriage and pregnancy at the age of fifteen.
