The book, Sophia’s War, is filled with life changing events that helped shape the complicated life of the main character, Sophia. The first event that helped shape the life and character of Sophia in this book is the hanging of Nathan Hale. This was a life changing event because it proved to the 12-year-old girl the brutality and cruelty of the British government and officers. This event also helped recruit Mr. Townsend as a spy for George Washington and the Patriots. Sophia’s War proves this when Avi says, “Later, we learned that the young man’s name was Nathan Hale. Living with Andre lead to Sophia developing affection for him, which later put her at war with herself. This is proved in the book, Sophia’s War, when Avi states, “I had caused his hanging and that I adored him. You see, I no longer wish to be at war with myself” (302). This clearly shows that Sophia’s affection for Andre led her to be at war with herself. Additionally, Sophia’s affection also made her hesitate to spy on him and it made her put herself in danger by wanting to be noticed. Living with John Andre also led to another life changing event for Sophia: the death of Sophia’s brother, William. Since Andre refused to help Sophia rescue her brother, William died aboard a British prison ship called the Good Intent. William’s death also made Sophia realize that she hadn’t contributed to the struggle for American freedom against the British. This is proved in Sophia’s War when Avi states, “ Did I not constantly chide myself about my unfulfilled vow to avenge my brother’s death? Yet what had I done? Nothing” (142). This clearly shows that William’s death motivated Sophia to become a spy and contribute to the freedom fight, even though she was a
