Analysis: The War In Afghanistan's Haunted NATO

The war in Afghanistan has haunted NATO for more than a decade, causing many to question the purpose, capabilities and common sense of the organization. Thirteen years after NATO assumed the command of ISAF, it is time to review the Alliance’s shortcomings and draw appropriate conclusions.
The war in Afghanistan started in 2001, its goal being removing the Taliban movement from power and dismantling al-Qaeda - but no one expected that there still would be foreign troops in the country ten years later. After the initial success of US-led invasion, Taliban was ousted from power and the UNSC-established mission was handed over to the Alliance. For the next 11 years, the Allies trying to rebuild the government and train local army would struggle to face the asymmetric warfare of the Taliban insurgents. The ISAF finally ended in 2014, leaving behind a training force and a fragile government that was tasked with waging war on the Taliban on its own while being plagued by corruption, narcotics trade and poverty. NATO means collective defense: to ask Allies to soldier on and on in a foreign country thousands of kilometers away from Europe is much more problematic. Consequently, the resources Allies were willing to expend were altogether inadequate to accomplish their ambitious goals. Nation building is exceedingly difficult even in the most favorable of circumstances – and Afghanistan was rather far from those. If the Allies truly wanted to win, they would have to spend more money, send more troops and undertake questionable actions towards countries like Pakistan. They chose not to, seeing that the significance of Afghanistan for their interests was rather debatable, but they failed to comprehend that to continue the operation at the level they did level was futile and doomed to
