The San Bernardino Shooting
December 2, 2015, there were 14 people killed and 21 injured from Islamic extremists. This attack took place in San Bernardino, California, and was put in place by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik. The mass shooting took place at a work training event, once the shooting was over the couple fled the scene. However, the police pursued their vehicle and killed both perpetrators four hours later. They both were not affiliated with any terrorist organization, but were inspired by terrorist groups and were “homegrown” (Serrano & Bennett) Islamic extremists. As the terrorist attacks are becoming more frequent and violent, the need for a solution is increasing to handle the war on terrorism. Farook and Malik plotted this
The “Shootings at Columbine High School: The Law Enforcement Response” case, in Richard Stillman’s Public Administration: Concepts and Cases, Ninth Edition, covers the Columbine High School law enforcement response to the mass murders committed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Columbine High School is located in Littleton, CO, which is situated in the center of multiple jurisdictions. The case raises management communication
The San Bernardino shooting was very tragic, with 14 deaths and many more injured. The people that did this, the terrorists were horrible people. They are trying to live out their religion in the wrong
Was Orlando shooter Omar Mateen a GayPorn star? There have been a lot of questions surrounding the 29 year olds life after his rampage left 49 dead. And some of these questions are aimed at his sexual preferences in the bedroom. After such a tragic incident, looking into if someone is gay, straight, or bisexual is pretty superficial. However, in this case it may reveal the “why.” A former GayPorn inspired lover of the Orlando shooter came forward and discussed some of the “why” in a news interview.
On the evening of February 17, 2016, the phone of one of the San Bernardino shooters was found. The phone was still in working condition but could not be accessed because of security measures that could potentially wipe all the data on it. A reporter from the New York Times, Mike Isaac, informs on the situation in depth, writing how, being a potentially huge piece of evidence, the court demanded that the company that made the phone, Apple, create a means to either bypass or remove the encryption on it so the FBI could access the phone’s contents. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has refused to do this, stating that “No reasonable person would find [it] acceptable” to create a technique that threatens the security of others.
December 14, 2012, Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza, 20, used an assault rifle to kill 20-first grade students ages 6 & 7 and 6 staff members in Sandy Hook Elementary, then killed himself. Before the murder he shot and killed his mother at his home. In January, council voted to demolish the home.
First of all, one of the causes of the Orlando nightclub shooting was that the person who purchased the firearms could purchase arms as granted to U.S. citizens by the second amendment. The problem is not the second amendment. The problem is who is allowed to purchase certain firearms, because if someone thinks about it why would anyone need to purchase an assault rifle. There should be no reason why anyone would need to buy an assault rifle. Barack Obama stated, “This appears to be homegrown terrorism carried out by legally purchased firearms.” The weapons used in the attack were a SIG Sauer MCX semi-automatic rifle and a 9mm Glock 17 semi-automatic pistol. After the attack many influencers and famous people apart of the LGBT community protested for more gun control laws that would make the act of buying a gun more difficult, but was more of a safety precaution for those around the person who was purchasing the firearm. Many influencers from the LGBT community have created videos urging their audience to contact their senators and representatives to tell them to support gun control laws. During this time gun control laws were being voted on and the results were that the gun control laws were voted against between seven to nine times. The U. S. House of Representatives and the Senate have failed to put more strict gun laws in place to prevent terrorist attacks and other mass shootings. Since the attack at Pulse
The events of the San Bernardino shooting were a tragedy. 14 people were killed, and another 22 were injured when a married terrorist couple staged an attack on a Christmas party. This was an unmitigated catastrophe, but it spawned one of the most important security debates in recent memory. The FBI wanted to unlock one of the suspects phones, but were unable to do so because of security measures on the phone. The FBI wanted to brute force the password lock on the iPhone, but device would wipe itself after 10 failed attempts to unlock the iPhone. Thus, the FBI asked Apple to create an intentionally insecure iOS update, specifically for this iPhone, in order to bypass the security restrictions. Apple disagreed with the FBI, and tried to avoid helping the FBI in such a way, arguing it would undermine the purpose of security itself. Overall, Apple has the best argument, both legally and as a matter of public policy.
After seventeen school shootings already this year, Americans seem to know the routine. They see the news of another shooting , wonder what the world has come to, tweet out their thoughts and prayers, and move on with their lives as though nothing happened. Some politicians will propose reforms, but opposers will shoot them down by claiming that we must wait until long after the tragedy to talk about politics. With an average of 1.4 shootings per week this year, when will it not seem too soon (Ahmed). In his book Columbine, author Dave Cullen takes a look at one of America’s most infamous tragedies, the Columbine High School Massacre. In the April of 1999, two boys entered Columbine High with deadly weapons and proceeded to kill fourteen of their peers, as well as injure others. As the first publicized school
On the morning of December 14, 2012, America experienced its deadliest mass shooting at a grade school and the fourth-deadliest mass shooting by a single person. All of America was left reeling as the details of what transpired were shared through every media outlet. Media reporters and American citizens were left wondering about how could this have happened and how could we have prevented this heinous crime. In looking for an explanation the Media emphasized various topics such as mental health, violent video games, and gun control as possible catalysts. This essay will provide a critical analysis of what happened in the Sandy Hook Shooting, the media’s role in public opinion, and the arguments laid forth by claims-makers as associated
Gun control is a debate that has escalated dramatically in recent years. The Second Amendment states “to the United States Constitution protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms.” , but at what point is that line crossed where it is questioned whether we are allowed to bear arms or not? Mark Follman, a writer for the LA times, wrote an article “America 's mass-shootings epidemic” that talks about how mass murders have been escalating over the past decades. This article is geared towards readers between the ages of twenty to fifty because of the use of statistics that appeals to this age group who are mainly set out to redeem fact. Heidi Yewman, a writer for USA Today, wrote an article “Don 't 'like ' Facebook 's gun solution: Column” about how Facebook does not take caution when online weapon exchanges occur. This article is geared more towards an eighteen to thirty year old audience because of the editor’s use of trying to relate to her reader. Mark Follman’s article is logos-driven because he uses facts that he has collected in order to show his reader how mass murders have escalated. Heidi Yewman’s article is more ethos-driven because her use of herself as examples to support her writing.
Further, a mass shooting occurred on December 2, 2015 in the Inland Regional Center, which provides services to the disabled, in San Bernardino, California. Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a couple armed with .233-caliber assault rifles, and two nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistols, which were all legally purchased, shot and killed fourteen people and injured twenty-one. After engaging in a shootout with police, the couple was killed. The victims were people Farook knew because he worked with them. The shooters left 1,400 rounds for the rifle and 200 for the pistols in a car rental. In addition, police found over 2,000 rounds of handgun ammunition, over 2,500 rounds for assault rifles, twelve homemade pipe bombs, and materials
The United States has had over 350 mass shootings in 2015 alone. There is no specific criteria for mass shootings besides that there are multiple victims and it seems to be at random. There have been a number of mass shootings that have made the news worldwide like; the mass shooting at a black church in S.C and the mass shooting in Texas that left over 20 individuals dead or injured. There are several reasons why a mass shooting may occur. The most recent mass shooting happened this month in California and it happened at a home for the mentally ill. On December 2, 2015 Syed Rizwan Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik opened fire on at a holiday party in the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. Fourteen died and 21 were
Domestic terrorism has been a major threat in the US since the catastrophic event that took place during attack on 9/11. Following the aftermath of the terrorist attack, the US intelligence services and law enforcement agencies emphasized heavily on combating terrorism on global scale as international terrorism was views as the major threat to the public security of the US which caused the issue of domestic terrorism to be overlooked. We have seen many terrorist attacks since the attack on 9/11 that were planned and executed by individuals and groups born and raised in America. Some of those attacks include the Oklahoma City bombing, the Boston marathon bombing. There has also been increasing number of mass shooting by individuals that were identified as to be radicalized by terrorist groups abroad, the most recent mass shooting that was identified as a terrorist act was in Orlando where more than 50 people were killed (Alveraz, p.1). The cases mentioned above will be discussed in detail later in the essay. Although, American law enforcement agencies are actively conducting intelligence and operational missions to prevent international terrorism, however, the US needs to develop efficient tactics to prevent the rise of domestic terrorism. Otherwise, the United States may face a danger of the unfailing growth of domestic terrorism similar to some of the European countries; such as the United Kingdom. Consequently, law enforcement agencies should concentrate on the preclusion
This research paper’s purpose is to examine how the media is received, based on an audience analysis on the Orlando nightclub shooting in June 2016. His follows on from the findings of a content analysis on the same topic and used to understand how both the public and the media represent the shooter, Omar Mateen. An audience analysis is used to determine how the public and viewers responded to media content and is used to shape media content (Napoli, 2012, pp.79). A survey responded by peers was used to gather the results, which will be analysed and compared throughout this paper with the findings of the content analysis, and used to understand, not only the representation of Omar Mateen, but also the relationship between the public and the media.
The Orlando nightclub shooting in Florida on June 12, 2016 was the single largest massacre in U.S history, taking the lives of 50 individuals, including the shooter himself, and injuring 53 others. This is one extreme example of the gun violence that has been occurring in this country, but mass shootings like this and the one at Newton in 2012 are only a small part of our gun violence issue. The everyday gun violence that takes place in cities all across the United States claims the lives of thousands every single year. According to The Guardian, 33,500 civilians die each year because of gun brutality- “that’s about 1 life every 15 minutes” (Beckett). Between the years of 1999 and 2013, there were 464,003 gun deaths in the U.S, about 58% of them were suicides 37% were homicides. (ProCon.org) Gun violence and the consequences of that violence, have become a real and dangerous problem in the U.S , why else would the CDC list the United States as having the highest rate of gun violence out of all developed countries today? (Gale Opposing Viewpoints) This issue is not just attributable to a single factor, there are several that play an important part in why gun violence is such an issue in the U.S, namely laws and poverty; and in these causes we can also find solutions.
