Talent is a complete understatement for these performers. True talent is hard to find, but not in New York City; talent could be right around the corner. Lincoln center is the home of talent, from the opera singers to the dancers and actors. But on April 29th, it was home to the talent of the Juilliard Music Advancement Programs spring concert. Juilliard is a school full of talent and to be able to attend a concert as witness their music was truly amazing. When these students stepped on to the stage they were as young as 8 years old. They had more talent at 8 years old then most students I know. Pieces from Bach to Schuman and Boyce to De Abreu were amazing; the transition of classical to jazzy was enjoyable and soothing. Thomas by Sonny Rollins. This piece was performed by the MAP Wind Ensemble and it was their closing piece. St. Thomas is a popular jazz piece from the 1950’s. Although the famous composer Sonny Rollins is given the credit for the song, it is “largely based on a traditional English Song “The Lincolnshire Poacher”, whose earliest printed version appeared in c.1776” (MAP). The tune has a Caribbean vibe to the song and which is great because the song that inspired this piece came from a Virgin Island nursery song. This piece is such a popular and fun piece in the Jazz genre and is now considered to be a jazz standard for many musicians. Nikki Barron one of the musicians who performed the piece said in the program pamphlet that “what makes this piece unique in terms of jazz is how important percussion is to the sound and the feel of it, and the use of the steel drum which gives it a distinctly Caribbean flavor” (MAP). This is because it was the finale piece of their ensembles performance and to end with not only a bang, but with an upbeat song that just makes you want to dance. All the pieces played before were very classical and boring, and it was honestly just refreshing to hear a song with a different flavor. It also made me happy because it made me feel ready for summer because it had that Caribbean Vibe and it just made me smile. This piece also had two duets, this included a flute duet and a saxophone duet which jazzed up the performance as well because none of the other pieces had featured performers. St. Thomas was honestly a very surprising piece because when attending a Juilliard performance, you think that pure classical music is going to be performed because that is what you expect from a highly rated performing arts school. But then they take you in another direction and perform not one but two summery, tropical feeling, upbeat songs. St. Thomas being one and the MAP Orchestra performed Tico Tico By Zequinha De Abreu both pieces were upbeat and lively and not what I expected. It was honestly just a refreshing piece and I deeply enjoyed hearing
