Talent is a complete understatement for these performers. True talent is hard to find, but not in New York City; talent could be right around the corner. Lincoln center is the home of talent, from the opera singers to the dancers and actors. But on April 29th, it was home to the talent of the Juilliard Music Advancement Programs spring concert. Juilliard is a school full of talent and to be able to attend a concert as witness their music was truly amazing. When these students stepped on to the stage they were as young as 8 years old. They had more talent at 8 years old then most students I know. Pieces from Bach to Schuman and Boyce to De Abreu were amazing; the transition of classical to jazzy was enjoyable and soothing. Thomas by Sonny Rollins. This piece was performed by the MAP Wind Ensemble and it was their closing piece. St. Thomas is a popular jazz piece from the 1950’s. Although the famous composer Sonny Rollins is given the credit for the song, it is “largely based on a traditional English Song “The Lincolnshire Poacher”, whose earliest printed version appeared in c.1776” (MAP). The tune has a Caribbean vibe to the song and which is great because the song that inspired this piece came from a Virgin Island nursery song. This piece is such a popular and fun piece in the Jazz genre and is now considered to be a jazz standard for many musicians. Nikki Barron one of the musicians who performed the piece said in the program pamphlet that “what makes this piece unique in terms of jazz is how important percussion is to the sound and the feel of it, and the use of the steel drum which gives it a distinctly Caribbean flavor” (MAP). She goes on to explain that it is one of their favorite pieces to …show more content…
This is because it was the finale piece of their ensembles performance and to end with not only a bang, but with an upbeat song that just makes you want to dance. All the pieces played before were very classical and boring, and it was honestly just refreshing to hear a song with a different flavor. It also made me happy because it made me feel ready for summer because it had that Caribbean Vibe and it just made me smile. This piece also had two duets, this included a flute duet and a saxophone duet which jazzed up the performance as well because none of the other pieces had featured performers. St. Thomas was honestly a very surprising piece because when attending a Juilliard performance, you think that pure classical music is going to be performed because that is what you expect from a highly rated performing arts school. But then they take you in another direction and perform not one but two summery, tropical feeling, upbeat songs. St. Thomas being one and the MAP Orchestra performed Tico Tico By Zequinha De Abreu both pieces were upbeat and lively and not what I expected. It was honestly just a refreshing piece and I deeply enjoyed hearing
It’s amazing to listen to musicians who do not normally play with each other come together and leave the audience in complete awe. That is exactly what happened on the day of Thursday November 26th 2014. The Bill Crothers Varsity Winds comprised of grade eleven and twelve students along with a few, talented grade tens went to listen to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra play. We travelled via a typical yellow school bus that took us to Roy Thomson Hall where we went right to the top level and took our seats. The seating seemed rather helpful because from a distance you could hear every instrument when you focused on it. It was beautiful. The band presented well with their “Penguin” like attire that was kind to the eyes. They appeared very organized,
The music performance I went to see was the University Symphony Halloween concert held in Comstock Concert Hall. This was the first time I had been to a symphony production and was eager to see what was in store. The show started off with each part of the orchestra introducing themselves in different costumes and skits. For example, the cellos were dressed in camouflage and the tubas were dressed as sheep. After a long introduction the lights dimmed and the show started. Attending this performance opened my eyes to how many elements there really were to music. It also showed me how each specific element has its own specific roll and impact on each performance.
I got the chance to see two performance om that day. The first short performance was diffult for me to understand. The show has some humor to get the audience to have some enjoyment. Which was very effective to
I think that the performer’s ability was appropriate for their location and for their audience because the tone quality of the musicians sounded very rich and clean. When I listened to the performance, I was able to hear all of the different parts of the piece clearly, which has made me much more conscious of the balance and dynamics of each phrase when I play. The texture of the pieces played was very rich and full because an orchestral piece is designed to have a good balance of instruments and good range of frequencies of sound that has lots of different things happening at the same time.
PROMETHEUS AND GAEA: CONNECTIONS TO ANTHEM According to the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Prometheus was the Titan god of forethought. As a Titan he was given a task to make mankind out of clay. After the task was done, conflict was brought between him and Zeus. This conflict was established when Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave to the man down on Earth.
During the latter half of the 19th Century, lives of the Native Indians who lived on the plains was affected from technological developments and government actions. Some of these developments and actions involved cutting off the Indians from their herds, innocent lives being taken away from Indian men, women, and children who had nothing to do with the whites, and the movement of Natives into reservations. The way government treated the Natives played a large role in the Indians lives, and it’s clear that it affected them in an unjust way.
We went to see this last evening (opening night for this program) and were blown away. Never having seen anything on the program before, I didn't know what to expect, but each piece was magnificent. Stanton Welch's "Tu Tu" seems to me to be a kind of personal love song to ballet. The opening and overall structure reminded me of Ashton's "Sinfonietta" with a very energetic first movement followed by a stunningly beautiful slow movement and then a fast and again more lighthearted finale. It was the second movement that amazed me the most. A solo ballerina slowly emerges from darkness and seems to reflect on her career as a ballerina with tenderness and sadness. The mood of this piece was masterfully created. It was beautifully and
During the early 1900’s, a new style of music began to take shape in the colorful city of New Orleans. People from all over the world came to exchange stories, conversation, and music. Although it is a very hard genre of music to define, it is said that Jazz is the combination of European and African music that was brought in via the ports. With mostly an African American population, the musicians shared their music in Storyville - a cultural melting pot, and began to spread the “New Orleans Sound”. They contributed to what would soon be known as Jazz in 1917. The spontaneous nature of Jazz’s syncopation and sound makes it a very humanistic style of music and makes every performance original. Every day we improvise, whether it is in conversation or spur of the moment decisions. These truly unique elements caused Jazz to become a symbol of America, and changed music forever.

My first concert experience turned out to be very different from what I expected. Even though I would not choose to listen to classical music normally, the concert has made me enjoy this type of music more and made me think about how much more there is to music than just lyrics and a
The school that I observed is Ps/Ms ABC 123 in the Bronx. The school is from Kindergarten to 8th grade. The school starts promptly at 8:00am. Free breakfast is served to all students who wish to eat. In the morning the school doors are open for students at 7:50am. From 7:45 -8:05, it looks busy around the school because of the people who drop their children off, some comes in cars and some walk their children to school. People have to cross a main road to drop off their children at school so the traffic on the main road moves slow and the traffic instructor also stand there to guide people when it is safe to cross the street. The assistant principal and other receivers stand outside in the playground. The playground has many exits that open to the gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium. Parents know which exist they have to drop of their children. The first grade that I was observing, they are dropped off by exist 5. Exist 5 open in the auditorium. The principles and the other receiver meet with the parents and the children. Parents also talk to each other. They also can sit on the benches in the children’s play area if they have to wait or pass their time. Only students are allowed to go inside of these exits with assistants. Anyone else have to go the front main entrance to enter the school building. Once the students are received, they go inside the auditorium and from there they are then taken to the classroom by their teachers.

The overall mood of music and choreography is quite cheerful and optimistic. It feels like a big celebration.
For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. There was a large attendance, and I think that much of the audience consisted of friends of the composers and/or performers. I went with three friends, who I convinced by telling it would be interesting to see
The music played throughout all of the concerts adhered to be diverse. The instruments, the individuals performing, and the conductor all proved to be outstanding. The concerts proved to be interesting as I witnessed them, first hand.
