If there was a massive battle happening a mere three days drive from you, would you notice? The answer may seem obvious, but in the book Diary of Anne Frank, Anne Frank, the youngest daughter of a family in hiding from the Nazis, does not notice the devastating battle that is occurring less than 72 hours away in Russian territory. By reading the book, the reader would not notice the action happening in Russia. There was no mention of the Anne Frank was unaware of the Soviet Union’s efforts to stop Germany, the contributions they made, or the sacrifices they faced in order to stop the war. First, Anne did not mention the war in Russia. It was a big war so it was hard to miss. Textual evidence for my claim that the war was a big deal is “Russia is estimated to have lost close to 30 million people to the Germans during the war. The true tally could be even much higher” (The Washington Times). Further proof that the war waged in Russia was large, is “Following the conquests of Greece and Yugolavia in the spring of 1941, Berlin prepared its most ambitious campaign; the destruction of Soviet Russia. The ensuing war would result in a staggering loss of human life, and in the final destruction of the Nazi regime” (The National Interest). Finally, more evidence that the war in Russia was crucial to World War II is “Between June 1941 and May 1945, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union engaged in a cataclysmic struggle on World War II’s Eastern Front.
