While they are sometimes critical and seek perfection, at the same time they are leaders who try to work with the entire group so that the dynamics flow together rather than individually.
Weaknesses: Conflict has been described as the process which begins when one party perceives that the other has frustrated, or is about to frustrate, some concern of his or hers. This could certainly be the case with Nintendo when it fights a head-to-head battle with Microsoft. The meanings of concerns in this case are the needs, wants and values of Nintendo. Therefore, conflict situations might arise when the needs, wants and values of two parties interfere with one another. Depending on how Nintendo and Microsoft react to conflict it may not be harmful. Indeed, it presents opportunities for situations to be driven forward effectively, particularly in business contexts. However, according to some people it appears that all reactions to conflict stem from two general impulses:
(1) The desire to satisfy personal concerns, which shows itself as assertive behavior, and
(2) The desire to satisfy the concerns of others, which shows itself in non-assertive behavior. These represent two behavioral dimensions and provide the basis for conflict-handling modes. These behaviors are further incorporated into the concept built around the idea that people react in one of five basic ways when faced with interpersonal conflict situations; competing, collaborating, compromising,
Conflict is generally defined by four criteria: expressed tension, interdependence, perceived incompatible goals, and the need for resolution (Wood,
In Interpersonal Conflict, Wilmot and Hocker reference Rahim’s (2011) model of five different conflict styles: obliging, avoiding,
Another place where we encounter conflict is at work. Work environments can be exceptionally interesting when dealing with conflict. At work, people can seek to impress and perform to exceed expectations, and at the other end of the spectrum, people can often say they are better than everyone and refuse to do what is required or expected of them. Often when taking part in large work groups of varying hierarchy, people may be keen to impress and show great work ethic, or they would rather complain about inefficiencies and management structure causing conflict between colleagues and managers. Whether passive or aggressive, humans tend to react very differently to their core personality when under conflict. Conflict that is encountered at work is often dealt with very differently to that of conflict encountered in home or social environments. At work there may be some conflict encountered with a customer, and in this case, the rules may suggest certain ways, or procedure to deal with this conflict. An aggressive person may be forced to deal with the situation on a passive way to avoid putting their job at risk. This does not truly show who the person is, merely showing how well they have been trained by an

By the end of 2006, two game console industry giants, Nintendo and Sony had launched their respective new products; the Wii and PS3. Various marketing strategies were implemented by both rivals and this writing attempt to analyse common and differing elements.
Nintendo however is not present in this new market and therefore it is very important to take in consideration to enter this new area because at the moment the company does not have products that satisfy those new needs resulting in the loose of sales and consequently revenues.
Behavioral scientists Kenneth Thomas and Ralph Kilmann, who developed the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, have identified five styles to responding to conflict—competition, collaboration, compromise,
There are many was that people experience conflict throughout their day. This can include conflict in the work place, at home, or even on video games. All these opportunities to collide with conflict can make it difficult to determine what type of conflict is occurring, and reach the best possible solution to the problem. There are certain cues that can be seen when dealing with realistic, and nonrealistic conflict. These include then end goals related to the conflict, flexibility, and the interests of the parties involved within the conflict. Also, the appropriate response to a non-realistic conflict is to use force or coercion to resolve the issue. First realistic conflict produces different cues from nonrealistic, and these can be used in determining the type of conflict that is being dealt with.
At the core of all conflict analysis is perception (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011). In interpersonal conflicts, people react as though there are genuinely different goals, there is not enough of some resource, and the other person actually is getting in the way of something prized by the perceiver (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011).
Nintendo strategy is made the use of game console simple, unlike Microsoft and Sony with their much complex game console feature. Nintendo also made the intuitive interaction between gamer and video game to overcome the key barrier to consumption. The success of Wii is dramatically broadening the market and impossible to be ignored by their competitors. Microsoft and Sony responded by replicating some of its key element, most notably the intuitive motion-sensing game controller. Sony and Microsoft launched Sony PlayStation Move and Microsoft Kinect respectively. As shown in figure below, the market share of Nintendo begins to decline since then.
There are five conflict-handling styles: Forcing Style, Collaborating Style, Compromising Style, Avoiding Style and Accommodating Style. The compromising style “refers to behaviors at an intermediate level of cooperation and assertiveness. (Hellriegel, Slocum pg. 392) ” The person using is style tries to meet a goal by give-and-take. The accommodating style “refers to cooperative and unassertive behavior. (Hellriegel, Slocum pg. 393) ” The person using this style tries to accomplish a goal by using unselfish acts that will promote cooperation in others by complying with their wishes. The collaborating style “refers to high levels of cooperative and assertive behavior. (Hellriegel, Slocum pg. 391) ” The person using this style is using a win-win approach to working with others and handling conflict. When the CEO of General Hospital, Mike Hammer first attempted to control physician-driven cost he used the collaborating style by trying to convince the Director of
How did Nintendo go from a small card company in Kyoto, Japan to a global juggernaut in the video game industry? They were able to able to mesmerize us all with fun and new intuitive ways to enjoy a medium that was only looked at as toys, but now is a medium that is enjoyed by every one of all ages. To quote the former president of Nintendo, the late Satoru Iwata said, “Above all, video games are meant to be just one thing: Fun for everyone” with that philosophy Nintendo was able to shape, save, and innovate the home video game entertainment market. As a gamer I idolized Nintendo since I was a child, providing a fun and satisfying experience with wonderful stories that provided escapism from childhood trauma and I am forever grateful towards them.
Each person has a characteristic personality. Such a style reflects our unique wants, needs, and values. In conflicts, there are specific global patterns that can be identified that are reflective of how individuals deal with such challenges. These global patterns consist of five approaches to conflict management: Competing, Collaborating, Compromising, Avoiding, and Accommodating.
What is conflict? Even something as basic as a universal definition for the word conflict seems to vary from source to source. A literature review focusing on conflict defined it as “the interaction of interdependent people who perceive incompatibility and the possibility of interference from others as a result of this incompatibility” (Brinkert 2010). Often times the disagreement results not from a concrete difference, but rather a difference in perception (Ellis & Abbott 2012). One of the most important factors effecting conflict management is the resolution style used. The most often used tool for classifying how conflict is managed is the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (Iglesias & Vallejo 2012).
… a spectrum of interpersonal behavior that emerges when two or more parties’ interests or positions are in, or seem to be in, conflict – ranging from avoidance or passivity to accommodation and yielding to firm pursuit of personal objectives to aggression and combativeness. (p. 381)
