There are 14.8 million American adults between the ages of 15 to 44 who experience depression in some point and time throughout their life(“Depression”). Although depression is a word that is commonly misused 14.8 million people have experienced some form of depression, weather It may be major depression or mild depression. Often more than not, individuals confuse the days of unhappiness and the lack of desire to function with the rest of the world with major depression. When analyzing the poem Marks by Linda Pastan and the poem Myth by Natasha Tretheway I notice key features of a depressed individual. Pastan and Tretheway portray each of their characters as a depressed individual; because they focus so keenly on their unhappiness with their lives, and even suicide. Many people will argue that poetry and writing does not help with the effects of depression, but I disagree and I will explain why and how each author may be battling with their own form of depression as well as how writing these poems has empowered them and also given them the ability to handle depression. There are two main types of depression one being major depression that has the capability to mentally cripple the individual. Then we have mild depression or dysthymia that can be caused by situations also referred to as situational depression. Major depression is a very serious form of depression which handicaps the individual and makes them incapable of doing what we would consider everyday activities.
The main types of depression are major depression, persistent depressive disorder, psychotic depression and other types of depression. Major Depression is the most common type of depression where people lose interest in activities as well as changes in their appetite, sleeping and energy. They also have suicidal thoughts and feel insignificant. Persistent Depressive disorder is when
One of the things that is so fascinating about poetry is that it allows readers to discover and sometimes challenge and channel their emotions as well as their understanding. A poem’s words as well as its structure can reveal many things to its intended audience. In “Myth” by Natasha Trethewey, the poems form is just as important as the words she writes, becoming a map for the journey Trethewey takes, using transitions to take us from one place to another. The nature of the poem therefor becomes multifaceted, as it encourages the reader to think about the speaker’s words and use of form and structure she uses to craft this epic story. Using form as a tool, Trethewey is able to use structure as a way to guide us as readers and the speaker across the conscious and unconscious thoughts and dreams the speaker faces in this story.
Generally, anyone can develop a type of depression (yahoo.com 1). Most cases of depression go unrecognized and are just considered bad moods (depression 475). There are many types of depression and many severity levels of the disorder. Typically, a person who is depressed will have a unipolar or a bipolar disorder. Unipolars suffer only from depression. This can be major or dysthymia. Bipolars can have severe ups and downs in mood, clarity of the mind, and energy levels. They also experience manic episodes-, which are extreme highs and can have a low at the same time (Quinn 1).
Depression affects 350 million people and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Everyone deals with depression a different way but it is not easy, the best way is to see a professional and talk about it to try to let it all out, but most people come up with their own way. Depressed modern poets such as Jack Kerouac and Sylvia Plath tried to shock themselves into reality and heal their depression and feelings about certain subjects with alcohol and electroconvulsive therapy but could not. They both decided to chose the outlet of poetry and release their negative feelings by writing about similar themes. This becomes evident when one draws similarities between themes such as isolation, nature and love proven by examining The Big Sur by Jack Kerouac and many poetic works from Sylvia Plath. Being a popular poet can do alot to one, and if ones fans only care about their work and not their true feelings the artist tends to feel isolated.
There are several different types of depression. Often they are distinguished by their features, duration and severity of symptoms. Most of these kinds of depression are defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), an American Psychiatric Association publication which describes the standard criteria for different types of psychiatric disorders.
'Depression is the persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest, it affect the way and how you feel and can lead to a verity of emotional and physical disorders, affecting normal and day to day activates that you do. depression can in most case if left undealt with, will lead to more severe depression that can only be treated with intense therapies, and in some case medication that alter the chemical levels in your brain to affect your mood that you are experiencing'. Major depressive disorder, is characterized by multiple depressive episodes that are experienced in the individuals these can be seen as a decline in certain behaviours in the action of the individuals.
I’ve heard that depressed people make the best poets. This is a pretty good example. Lloyd Brown constant use of complex vocabulary and sentence structure, paired with his use of imagery and personification in many of the ideas and supporting details he presents, makes this paper seem more like a free-verse poem rather than an essay. Every idea he introduces is either an elaboration or an extension of an idea previously mentioned, which is good when writing an essay. The voice is a little too difficult for me to understand exactly what Brown intended to say, but I’m sure that readers with more experience with complex literature than me would enjoy this thoroughly.
A much more positive way to see depression is to look at benefits of depression. Nancy Andreasen argues that depression is closely associated with a “cognitive style” that makes people more likely to produce successful works of art (Lehrer, Jonah). One of the most important qualities in the creative process is persistent and based on Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Andreasen found that “successful writers are like prizefighters who keep on getting hit but won’t go down. They’ll stick with it until it’s right” (Lehrer, Jonah). While depression is a burden, many forms of creativity benefit from the relentless focus it makes possible. In addition, there is the virtue of self-loathing, which is one of many symptoms of depression. When people are stuck
Depression is not as simple as one may think. It is more than just feeling sad sometimes or having a bad day. Depression, the most common form of mental illness, is actually a brain disorder caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain (Hyde and Forsyth 6). There are many causes of depression including stressful life events like the loss of a loved one or physical or mental abuse (Mooney 16-17, 19). Depression can also be hereditary, meaning it is passed down genetically through families (Hyde and Forsyth 21). Numerous types of depression exist, but the three most common ones are major depression, manic depression, and dysthymia (Mooney 9-11).
When people refer to depression, they are usually referring to clinical or major depression. This type of depression is when a person experiences the characteristics of depression within a certain degree of intensity, either in a single episode, or that keep reoccurring over time. Another common type of depression is bipolar disorder, or as others refer to it as manic depression. Manic depression involves cycled periods of severe depression with times of extremely elevated or irritable mood known as mania. Many people also under go dysthymia. People with dysthymia go through life almost always feeling mildly depressed, which can greatly impair their ability to enjoy the positives in life. There is also seasonal affective disorder, unipolar depression, cyclothymia, and atypical depression. Season affective disorder is a depressive illness that has to do with a person's reaction to the amount of natural light a person receives. This illness mainly affects the body's sleep cycle and biological clock. Unipolar depression is described when a person can feel perfectly fine, but other times, they feel depressed, slowed down, or in a fog. A person may have only one or two episodes, or may continue to have these episodes throughout their lifetime. Then there is atypical depression. It's basically when a person can have fun and experience pleasure if an opportunity presents itself, but the feeling is short lived.
There are various types of depression. Major, Chronic and Manic are one of the types of depression which are categorized according to the intensity of the depression. A major depressed patient feels sad or depressed most of the day. Chronic depression is considered to be a mild depression. For instance dysthymia. There is no specific cause of dysthymia but it may be genetic. Bipolar disorder is a manic depression. It may be genetic and reveal the symptoms at the age of 15 to 24. Symptoms differ according to the patient.
There are five different forms of depression. Major depression, persistent depressive disorder, psychotic depression, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are the five forms. Major depression is when your ability to work, sleep, or eat, is affected. Persistent depressive disorder is where the depression and symptoms last two years. For it to be considered a persistent depressive disorder it must last

According to Dixon, (1987), there are four types of depression: normal, chronic, crisis, and clinical. the four types are distinguished by degree, intensity, duration, cause, hopefulness, response to treatment and level of functioning (Dixon, 1997). Normal depression is defined as mild periods of depression, linked to certain events that affect a student's mood periodically (Ramsey, 1994). Chronic depression involves frequent "bouts" of depression, often without an identifiable cause (Ramsey, 1994). Depression in a crisis state usually reflects a lack of problem-solving skills, and can be accompanied by feelings of "sadness,
