My Take on the Grab Bag After reviewing the videos for the “Grab Bag” speeches, I have chosen Alisha and Scott’s speeches as the best and weakest. It is my opinion that Scott’s speech was the best and Alisha’s was the weakest. There are vast differences between the introduction, organization and conclusion as well as minimal differences in supporting materials, delivery, and adaptation. Scott’s speech lacked a creative aspect, however, it did tie into the whole speech and helped set up the flow of the speech for the audience. He also had a nice transition from the introduction to his grab bag items to his self-introduction. I enjoyed how he showed his items before getting into the main part of his speech. It set up an outline for the
There are many things that a speech must contain to make it a well written and spoken speech. John F. Kennedy 's speech he gave on September 12th 1962, titled “Address at Rice University on the Nation 's Space Efforts”, better known as “We Choose to go to the Moon” contains many of the important factors of a successful speech. Kennedy used rhetorical strategies and skills to help him influence the American people to help accomplish the major goal of reaching the moon. Kennedy did not only want to reach the moon, but he wanted to be the first country to do so. President Kennedy effectively told the objective he found important by using ethos, pathos and kairos throughout his speech to help get the support of the people. By using these three rhetorical strategies Kennedy gave a moving speech.
Steve Jobs effectively uses pathos throughout the speech to appeal emotions of his audience, effectively connecting with audience. Jobs starts off his speech by using pathos saying “I'm honored to be with you today for your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation” (Jobs). From these first two
John Fitzgerald Kennedy delivered one of the most important American speeches after being sworn in as president on January 20, 1961. His inauguration speech was so influential that it seized the nation’s attention, and quotes from it are still clearly remembered by people today. It is considered one of the best speeches ever written and ever delivered. It presents a strong appeal to pathos, ethos, and logos and accomplishes what any speaker strives for – it speaks straight to the heart of the audience and inspires people.
Shirley Chisholm's speech is effective because of her use of logical flow of ideas, persuasive techniques, credible sources, and counter-arguments.
The speech “I have a dream” changed to world. It affected millions of American citizens. All of this was because his well written speech. This shows how important it is to put some tough into the speech instead of
Once again his overall posture and confident level was excellent. The speaker shows passion for the subject he is speaking on from the hand movements when he speaks on poverty and domestic abuse as being trivial (a means to an end). The speakers volume was just right he spoke high enough for the back of the room could here, and the speech was easy to understand. When given a speech a speaker should consider his audience in the wording of his speech, is he giving a speech to children for educational purposes or a group of college students, this is call no one left behind so the entire audience is on track.
In conclusion, Robert. F Kennedy’s speech was successful because of his use of empathy, contrasting forms, as well as anaphora. He moved the nation in the direction Martin Luther would have; full of peace and unity. In a short amount of time he constructed a speech that was forever on the minds of many American citizens and went down in history as one of the most famous and moving speeches of all
audience to tears and put the narrator it a state of emotional shock because of the wisdom
Stuart Scott did exceptionally well in his speech at the ESPY’s. He showed empathy towards people in general, making it feel like the audience can experience from his viewpoint as well. Mentioning the words, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up. “ from Jim Valvano’s speech was a great start to the general purpose of his speech.
John F Kennedy’s inaugural speech is widely considered one of the best speeches ever given. By the time Kennedy was elected, he had earned a degree from Harvard University, spent time in the Navy during the Second World War, and was already enjoying a successful political career serving in both houses of Congress. Kennedy delivered his eloquent inaugural speech to thousands of people on the steps of the Capitol building and millions more watching the broadcast on television which was the first to be shown in color. Something that I believe that he did better than other political speakers is that not only did he attempt to comfort his audience of the fear of the spread of communism, but he also successfully maintained the same tone throughout his speech; not only did that make his speech easier to comprehend and well received but it has continued to inspire generations since. Ultimately, the newly elected president delivered one of the most quoted and well known inaugural speeches to date.
JFK had many great speeches, the biggest and best arguably being his Inaugural Address. If you think that giving a speech to gather followers is easy, you’re wrong. It is an art, there are many trick to it. Some people have mastered this, and JFK has mastered this by using the ethos of ethos a lot in his speeches. The idea of teamwork is a common theme to him.
Carmen Perez opened her speech with a captivating video. The video contained clips of young people being detained, rallies, and protests. I thought the video was important because it provided the audience with some background knowledge about the work she does. However, I’m not sure if this was a good use of a grabber. I think she should have at least opened with some of her own words to grasp the audience’s attention. Also, in my opinion, the video was a little long. She could have played part of it and then another part of the video again a little later in the speech. When it was time for her to begin speaking, she informed the audience that her friend had passed away the day before, and she was feeling a lot of different emotions. Although I feel it was great for her to honor her friend by mentioning him in her speech, she did not incorporate him in
The first speech I choose to watch is titled ‘The Art of Asking” by Amanda Palmer. At first glance, due to her drawn-on eyebrows and short messy hairstyle, most people would have immediately pushed judgment on her. But, Palmer proves everyone wrong. As Palmer reveals later in the speech, she is a part of the band Grand Theft Orchestra. Through a very powerful story, Palmer persuades her audience; we shouldn 't fight the fact that digital content is easy to access and music should be freely shared by everyone. She goes on to suggest that artists can and should be directly supported by fans.
This piece was originally written for an activity in class known as the “grab bag”. We were given 4 things to incorporate in our story: a girl scout, a doughnut, a substitute bus driver, and the word chortle. At first I was completely unable to think of a good plot; i wanted something that would well written and realistic in a sense, but at the same time shocked the reader and stayed away from cliches. Luckily, my unique and completely unrelated topics, though proved slightly difficult to connect into a flowing composition, provided a good basis for a unique story. My favorite thing about this piece i believe, is the plot twist at the end; from what I've been told, I succeeded in my attempts to surprise and intrigue the readers. Though this
I had to bring everything back to school the next day, which was a pain. This made my pineapple not taste as good and become less fresh which was irritating. Plus, I did not like hauling stuff in 4 days in a row due to you not telling us the order every day. This speech differed greatly from the Shield Speech. The shield speech was about myself, and I think that talking about myself is easier than talking about an object.
