Can a Positive and Persevering Attitude Affect You?
People have several ways of determining their lives and future. Some of these choices can affect someone’s health short-term, long-term, and it can even have an effect on the people that come in contact with that particular person. (I need to add a brief summary that contains author and title names) Responding to conflict in a positive and persevering manner towards events and everyday life can have a positive effect on the individual and those around them. To begin with, positive thinking improves an individual’s health, physically and mentally. For example, Anne Frank kept her mind off of the holocaust while she was in hiding by using postcards and her movie-star collection to brighten

However, when Anne reacted the way she did, she gained many health benefits and prevented several disasters. Some health benefits of positive thinking are an increased life span, lower rates of depression, lower levels of distress, a greater resistance to the common cold, better psychological and physical well-being, improved cardiovascular health, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and better coping skills during hardships and times of stress (Mayo Clinic Staff). The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. Effective stress management is also associated with these many health benefits and several others (Mayo Clinic Staff). Optimism has been proven to strengthen the “immune system, prevent chronic disease, and help people cope with …show more content…
Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel, and the Japanese-Americans prove to everyone that just by looking for the good in events, situations, and life, anyone has the ability to alter their whole life. It is clear that positive mental attitude brightens the day, improves one’s outlook on life and leads to generalized success in everyday endeavors.

Having a positive attitude is important for lots of reasons. A few of the most important ones are that being positive can benefit a person’s physical health, mental health and others health by being available to help and encourage others. For example, “When we feel more positive emotions than negative ones, difficult situations are easier to handle” (Kids Health).

They influence one's ability to take action for his own health. Positive attitude and beliefs could eventually lead to better perception towards one's health and would prompt an individual to participate and take an active role in his care.
The literature on the Holocaust and Nazi Regime is incredibly controversial. Books range on varied scales of accessibility from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas to The Book Thief. Of course, the most famous of all is Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Across schools, Anne Frank’s diary serves as a cornerstone for educating children on the Nazi regime. Frank’s normal teenage problems are identifiable, amongst the unrelatable fears that culminated within that Annex in Amsterdam. Falling in love for the first time, her first period, and her trials against adults serve as a captivating reminder that despite her family’s situation, she was just like any other young teenager. However, should we shy away from the events beyond that of the end of Frank’s diary?
Anne Frank was a perfect example on how a positive attitude is much better than a negative one. She states, “I don’t think I will ever feel at home in this house, but it doesn’t mean I hate it. It’s more like being on vacation in some strange pension.”(Frank, entry July 11, 1942, paragraph: 18) She mentions she doesn’t like the house, but she remains positive and says it’s like being on vacation. Anne also says,” I was able to plaster the wall with pictures. It looks much more cheerful.”(Frank, entry July 11, 1942, paragraph: 19 ) She
I want to become more positive about external events that have occurred to me personally. Daniel Gilbert said, “People overestimate how much impact both good and bad events will have on them in the future”(Happy). We overestimate how circumstance will have an affect on us. According to Emiliya Zhivotovskaya, “Approximately 50% of the variation in happiness across individuals in a population is genetic, 10% of it is situational and, 40% of it is attributable to behavior and thought patterns” (The Biology of Happiness, pg 65). This shows us that only 10% of what happens to us does not affect our happiness in any drastic way it depends on your perspective on the event. In the Sources of Happiness it states,”..even though I’d rather not be HIV positive, I have to admit that in some way it has transformed my life… in positive ways…”(Dalai Lama, 102).
Thinking positively can be a difficult task, no matter the circumstance. When negativity fills you up like helium in a balloon you should always try to find the light in the darkness. Thinking positively doesn’t make the hard times disappear, it helps you survive negativity and the daily conflicts that challenge you. Looking on the bright side of things increases attentiveness, improves your ability to think, and leads to happier thoughts (Psychology Today). No matter what you are going through, you should always stay optimistic. “Man’s Search for Meaning” and “Dear Miss Breed” are great examples of how having a bright outlook can help you survive conflict.
The article “Using Positive Reinforcement to Motivate others”, explains how positivity motivates others in a business environment, “One of the most overlooked and simple ways to engage employees is by expressing honest, sincere appreciation for their efforts. By expressing appreciation for the positive other people contribute, you will benefit as much as they will” (Carnegie). The way a person treats others is a direct indication of what they think of them. Many people do not realize this and the people around them become disengaged and often stressed that they do not think highly of them. Simple ways to motivate others include always staying positive, identifying a trait that is respected in an individual, offering a sincere strength comment, and explain to them a likeable quality that they are doing. Motivation does not have to be given by an employer or colleague to be important, it can have an impact when given by someone small such as Anne Frank. Anne Frank wrote in her diary, “It's more like being on vacation in some strange pension. Kind of an odd way to look at life in hiding, but that's how things are. The Annex is an ideal place to hide in. It may be damp and lopsided, but there's probably not a more comfortable hiding place in all of Amsterdam. No, in all of Holland”. As Anne’s family was disheartened at the fact that they had to disappear till the war was over. Anne, along with her father, soon convinced everyone that they were very fortunate by staying assertive. Another example of a young girl motivating others by staying optimistic is found in the book Dear Miss Breed, “This trip has made me realize the wonderful work of nature. Her delicate work in shaping the stone mountains, the beautiful coloring of the surroundings—it seemed as if I was looking at the picture or a painting of a genius” (Ogawa). Louise Ogawa knew that her circumstances while in the Japanese
People set out their own goals for themselves to achieve, or are pushed by other to achieve a goal, either way any goal can be achieved with positive thinking. Thinking positively can benefit one in several ways. The positive thinking a person can do can help them reach a goal that they are striving for. Even more so if they are given an unlikely or difficult goal to achieve by another person. Their positive thinking will give them a stronger approach to said goal if they know they will succeed. Also, the fact that someone else has given them an unlikely goal to achieve will make the person try even more to achieve the goal and defy the odds. Lloyd Alexander’s book “The Fortune Tellers” demonstrates this, and shows that many things can be achieved with positive thinking. The story is about a young man who has many goals, one day
People can train their brain to scan for the positive and become experts at capitalizing on Happiness Advantage (Achor 91)
Positive thinking alone is not going to effectively help out the world to become better, thus people need to take actual support for the society. To put it differently, being happy for one’s own life is not enough, above all, one should take his or her happiness and use it to inspire others and to give back to the society. Actions that contains positivity can be small, but influential. Namely, it could be a smile; it could be being thankful and thoughtful for others; it could be generously giving and many more. Individual can do small action every single day and the accumulation of it could turn into something bigger and further powerful that one could not imagine. It takes someone to put themselves out there that will be a real
Assuredly, we have all heard, in the wake of complaining about a problem, someone countering, “don’t worry; everything will be alright.” Where, however, is the validation of this claim of positivity? Especially, now, more than ever, as I submit my college applications, seemingly everyone I know tries to reassure me with positive aphorisms. Although hints of truth may lie in their assertions, the absolutism of “everything” being cheery is absurd. Unfortunate events do happen. Nothing is black and white; nothing is absolute. This positive thinking leads many into denial. We say that we are okay, but really we are struggling to cope with all of the problems that life throws at us. Dr. Banschick asserts, “People who use positive thinking as a defense are trying to not feel anxious when they should.” As human beings, we are not to be happy, positive people all the time. In fact, many psychiatrists consider being constantly positive a manic disorder. We are, however, meant to experience all of the highs and lows in life, not masking hardships with smiles and agreeing nods. This summer, when my dog, my grandfather, and two of my friends passed away, many friends’ attempts to console me resulted in a light, cheerful maxim followed by “everything will be alright.” They told me to look on the bright side of life and “stay positive.” Consequently, for months, I felt despondent, as no facade of positivity that I undertook could alter the true emotions that I was
