Illusion versus Reality Ambrose Bierce’s short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” illustrates a theme of illusion versus reality distorted by the human mind. In the story, a man named Peyton Farquhar is about to be hanged on a railroad bridge towards the end of the American Civil War. Farquhar, a Confederate citizen eager to help the Confederate States of America’s cause, ventures out towards Owl Creek Bridge at the advice of a Union scout in disguise. Unbeknownst to Farquhar, Union troops captured the bridge and surrounding territory, and upon capturing Farquhar, elect to hang him on charges of being a Confederate spy and sympathizer. As he is being hanged, however, Farquhar is able to escape his fate by falling into the river below. He manages to return back to his home, only to find out the entire experience of escape was an illusion created by his own imagination. The story concludes with the revelation that he actually died on the railroad bridge. Farquhar’s mind was able to create a whole new reality for himself. This reality was vivid, and it seems real to the reader until the very end of the story. The hallucination also spanned hours, yet in reality time passed for only a few seconds. Ambrose Bierce’s story demonstrates the impeccable powers of the human mind and its ability to distort time and reality for itself. According to The Norton Anthology, Ambrose Bierce gained much of his writing inspiration from his service in the American Civil War. Bierce

Many have debated the question if time is stopped or slowed down during death, in the short story by Ambrose Bierce “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. The author uses lots of unique plot twists during the short story that manipulates the reader to lead towards another perspective. However, though out the story setting and plot is a huge factor in the story. Correspondingly, the viewpoint of, symbolism, and irony is used heavily throughout the story, translated in Peyton Farquhar mentality during his tragic death making it a true short story. Ambrose Bierce’s short story “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is a story about a man’s final moments on earth before he is hanged and how he got there. There is a struggle within the character Farquhar of who he is and who he thinks he is. This causes different views throughout the story between reality and a fantasized reality. This plays a big role in the story because in part three of the story he thinks he is far superior and had outwitted his captures and escaped without a scratch after the rope broke and fell into the water. In reality he had been hanged and his body was swaying back and forth. This story had more meaning then just the top layer of being just about a guy who is being hanged. The meaning of this story is how fluid time moves, by this I mean how time seems to flow like a river it can move fast to slow and even seem to stand still. It has a secondary meaning of how we can fantasize another reality that can cause troubles for us. By this I mean you can envision your self into another world when you are still in the actual world, this can cause you to get yourself into a lot of trouble.
Death, a difficult topic, a time when you no longer live, no longer breathe, the deadline in one’s life where they abruptly cease to exist. The topic of death is spoken of in many forms of literature, including a short story by Ambrose Bierce; An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. Farquhar, is the main character in this story who is being hung for trying to set a Union bridge on fire. Throughout this story, Bierce tells us through imagery of what thoughts and feelings Peyton goes through, as he comes face to face with death. We can see this through the common ideology of death, how Peyton explains his surroundings, and the outcome Peyton
In this Literature course, we read “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”. In this story, we see a plantation owner, who is about to get hung because he crossed the North’s territory, experience the last thoughts and moments going through his head before his death. This story creates a blurred line between reality and illusion. I believe this story has two themes: time and reality. Time is the main reason of why this story worked out like it did. Bierce uses the readers’ sense of time by revealing at the very end of the story that Farquhar was actually imagining this escape in the last seconds before his death. Bierce used the time element by manipulating and portraying the readers about the outcome of the story. The second type theme is reality. The way reality is used in this work has the readers fooled into believe one event is about to happen while a whole other event
The first part of the short history ‘’An Occurrence at the Owl Creek Bridge’’ is about a man with his hands tied behind his back being hanged on a bridge by a group of soldiers. During his execution, the man looks down at the water below him and begging to think about different ways he could scape home to see his wife. He idealizes that the best way to escape is through the water by submerging himself. Then quickly, he could be freeing his hands from the bandings, removing the noose around his neck and pushing up to the surface.
Time can be good or bad depending on how it is perceived. When in moments of distress, time can go extremely slow or when having fun, time can go fast. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge written by Ambrose Bierce starts by Peyton Farquhar being prepared to be hanged for interfering with the railroad. He then goes into a dream state where he is free and has escaped to his wife and kid. Farquhar is harshly taken away from this dream with the snap of the rope and him proceeding to be hanged. Bierce Uses many literary techniques in the story to support his motif of time such as imagery, symbolism and characterization.
Believe in yourself, and you can do it. Ever heard that quote? Probably. Maybe your parents said, “Just believe in yourself, and everything will turn out okay.” But that didn’t work out so well for Peyton Farquhar in ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’ by Ambrose Bierce. In the short story, a well-to-do planter, named Peyton Farquhar goes to a restricted bridge, called Owl Creek Bridge. He is then hanged, but then escapes back to his wife. Right after, however, he dies and realizes he never left Owl Creek Bridge. The main theme in ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’, by Ambrose Bierce, is that people believe what they want to believe. This is supported by the fact that Peyton Farquhar wanted to believe that he made it back to his wife, he
Time is portrayed in “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” when the time moves in slow motion, is in reality, and when time races very quickly. The theme in this story is very important because it puts emphasis on the events.
Ambrose Bierce’s short story, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” and the film version directed by Robert Enrico share some similarities but mostly the differences between the two works. Both the short story and film can be compared and contrasted in relation to the emotion, detail and perspective. One is at an advantage, reading the short story before seeing the film because the story gives a better idea of what is happening and who the protagonist really is. In other words, the short story helps in providing the reader with key details that are not mentioned in the film.
