Response to question 4. Many people believe believed throughout history that the beginning of North America’s inhabitance was when Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean in the year 1492. They believed that he is the person who discovered America where in fact it was the Native Americans who made the initial discovery. Therefore, Columbus’s mission is considered more of a journey. One of the motivators behind the voyage was to move away from Britain and begin a new life in what was to them, land of potential opportunity. Most of all, the Europeans were seeking wealth. When they arrived, not only did they find that there were already people here, but they also came to realize that the gold they were seeking didn’t exist. Rather …show more content…
Among the rights that colonists believed they had before the revolution, the right to vote was one that was debated most. The reality is that although the colonies were under British rule before 1783, they didn’t really get a say in anything that happened within the Parliament. The colonists also wanted to form their own government in the new world. The Seven Years War, also known as the French and Indian War was the whole reason that the British started to intervene. They did so through taxation. The French and Indian war left Britain with a large amount of war debt and they imposed taxes on goods in the colonies to help them pay it off. The colonies were tired of their daily lives being interrupted by the British government and they eventually fought the war for Independence against what was considered one of the most powerful armies in the world. Response to question 2. The issue of slavery has been in infamous part of American history since it first started in the 1600’s in Jamestown, Virginia. During the colonial era, white male landowners needed help on their land taking care of crops, so they would purchase the African slaves after they arrived by boat and have them work the land as well as other tasks that needed to be done such as tending to
The Seven Years War, which was called the French and Indian War in the colonies, was a war between the British, and the French and their many Native American allies. British leader, William Pitt, paid the Prussian soldiers to fight for them in the war. In the end, the British ended up winning the Seven Years War. Because the British paid Prussia, they ended up in debt by the time the war was over. To bring themselves out of debt, they taxed the colonists.
From that day in 1619 at Jamestown, Virginia when the first African slaves were brought to aid in crop production there has been a driving force that has always had a hand in making America the place that it is today. When those first slaves were brought here there wasn’t rally a plan or model for slavery they were treated as indentured servants, the only difference was they weren’t citizens and not subject to the rules they followed. The profitability of the farming industry in the colonies and the loss of workers as the indentured servants worked off their debts, in 1641 blacks became personal property of the people who had originally bartered for them.
The Northeast had more merchants and business people involved with trade and manufactures. Their economy was more dependent on trade companies with skilled laborers. There proximity to the sea and natural ports helped facilitate. Whereas in the South, there economy was agriculture and plant based with natural raw materials. For example their cash crop was cotton. Their economy was rather successful and didn’t need an economic industrial transformation.
1. From the perspective of Native Americans, the Spanish and English empires in America had more similarities than differences. Assess the validity of this generalization.

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, in fourteen hundred ninety two. When we were kids, we were taught this little rhyme to remember that Christopher Columbus discovered America. And just like George Washington and the cherry tree story and Isaac Newton’s apple, this is a lie we learned in school. The cherry tree story is a myth, Newton took two years to figure out what gravity was and it was what not a “aha!” moment, but most importantly, Columbus did not discover America. In fact, North America was discovered 500 years before Columbus was even born. It was actually the Vikings that are the true founders of North America, more specifically Leif Erikson. The founder of North America was Leif Erikson because of the time period and
I attended the Miss Essence Pageant that was held on Thursday, February16 at 7:00 o’clock located at the Fowler Center on Arkansas State University’s campus. This event allows African American women to showcase their talents and earn a scholarship. The pageant was put on by the Black Student Association and the Office of Diversity. When I first walked into the auditorium, I immediately heard loud rhythm and blues music that was played by a DJ.

Throughout the history, slavery has existed simultaneously with the forming of the United States of America. Many Africans were dictated to step down their native land behind as they lost in the war with the colonist. Soon after European traders first came and settled in America with numbers of African servants, the slavery era began in the United States between 17th and 18th century. A system of forced labor was well established back then, as the needs for slaves rose dramatically. The idea of white supremacy came into being afterwards, which was the bedrock of racial tension in the United States, and still entrenched in the American civilization until today. Segregation and discrimination have always been the stark and prominent issue facing
In 2006, I won a beauty contest in my country, Ivory Coast. Then, in 2007, I won the beauty contest of Miss ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States). During this time, I did not attend school, as a result, I did not accomplish my bachelor degree. When I got elected, I became the ambassador of beauty for my country and for west Africa. I met with several presidents in Africa during official ceremony and participated at several events, such as the world cup 2006. Winning these contests have been a blessing and at the same time a challenging event in my life. At a certain point, I had to decide whether I wanted to continue this “easy” life or if I wanted to be an accomplish woman in another way. It was not an easy decision because of
This girl and her family have a very high quality of life. I feel like this is very unfair considering what people in poor countries have to do to get through each day without dying while she doesn’t even have to worry about that and has more than enough money. She has been in over 100 beauty pageants and has won many crowns, with the money they spent on that, it could feed and take care of the Romanian boy and his family. I believe that the rich should pay more taxes to help give families like this boys clean water food and shelter. I think that as she gets older if she is not taught differently, she will take advantage of this and will possibly grow up snotty.
The world of child beauty pageants is similar to the twilight zone. It’s hard to believe that children as young as 2, have hair extensions, professional grade makeup, and spray tans. TLC’s hit television show “Toddlers & Tiara’s”, depicts the horrifying and true events of what actually goes on in these pageants. Nationally broadcasting the inherent sexualization of little girls for all to see has become completely desensitized. The lasting effects that preforming in beauty pageants has on girls who have been through years of competing is far greater than the trophies and tiara’s displayed on their shelves. Dressing toddlers in costumes, forcing them to dance and parade around on stage only to be judged on who is the prettiest by adults is sick and disturbed.
Beauty competitions date as far back as Ancient Greece. Greek Mythology tells the story of a dispute amongst the goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena, whom were arguing over who was the most beautiful. The three goddesses called upon Alexandros to decide which of the three had the most attractive looks. Each of the goddesses bribed him until he selected Aphrodite who promised him Helen of Troy. Chaos erupted and eventually, the Trojan War was set off. (People and Events: The Origins of the Beauty Pageant). The origins of modern day pageants date back to the early 1920s. An Atlantic City hotel owner hosted a contest to determine which little girl was the prettiest attracted the attention of hundreds and was used as a marketing tool. The contest was very relaxed and the young girls would dress very conservatively in church-like dresses and wear little to no makeup (Evolution of Beauty Pageants). Present day beauty pageants are completely different from the pageants of the past. Instead of leading to war, they are a war. Pageant girls today prepare for highly competitive contests with weeks, sometimes even months of grueling training. The girls compete for awards such as trophies, cash prizes, and scholarships. With such a tough competition, females indulge in grooming choices that cause young girls to look like grown women. At each contest, there is only one winner, crushing all confidence any of the other participants may had had because they were not chosen. Beauty contests
Slavery in America all started when the first African slaves came to the North American colony of Jamestown and Virginia in 1619. They used the slaves to work on their crops such as tobacco.Slavery was practiced in colonies in 17th and the 18th centuries, African Americans were used to build the economic foundations of the new nation. The creation of the cotton gin in 1973 showed the importance of slavery to the South’s economy.
Rutgers University (n.d.) shows how slavery occurred as far back as ancient civilization, but the 1400’s marked the start of the European slave trade in Africa with the Portuguese transporting people from Africa to Portugal, and using them as slaves. Throughout the 1600’s other countries joined the European slave trade, and this was a major part in history internationally that started the exploitation of slavery. “For the first 250 years of American history, white landowners, predominantly from the South, enslaved millions of individuals of African descent” (Acharya, Blackwell, Sen, 2016, p. 621). This started slavery in the United States, and although there was an effort to abolish it, this is still an
