This essay will discuss my area of research for the industrial revolution. ‘The era known as the Industrial Revolution was a period in which fundamental changes occurred in agriculture, textile and metal manufacture, transportation, economic policies and the social structure in England’ (Joseph A. Montagne 2015). My key question that I based my research on is “To what extent did the changes in industry in great Brittan have a negative Effect on family life and society in general from 1750-1850? My research will also discuss my 3 other key questions which I will discuss furtherly in my essay.
The key question to my research asks ‘To what extent did the changes in industry in great Brittan have a negative Effect on family life and society in general From 1750-1850?’ The industry majorly impacted most English families in a negative or even positive way. At the beginning of the industrial revolution “The industrial revolution spawned great changes in family structure. Industrialization and urbanization prompted a marked change in life and working styles. Many people, especially the young, left the farms to work in factories; this process led to the dissolution of many extended families” (Finneran 1994: 46). In this period lots of

In the rush to construct houses, many were built too quickly in neighbouring rows. The houses often had a tiny backyard which had an outdoor communal toilet, shared by up to 5 families. In the first 60 years of the industrial revolution ‘poorhouses’ where set up by the government. “Our intention is to make the workhouses as much like prisons as possible.” Another said, “Our object is to establish a discipline so severe and repulsive as to make them a terror to the poor and prevent them from entering” (Thompson 267). Even though these poor houses had very poor living conditions the population increased from 78,536 in 1838 to 197,179 in
The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to society in the nineteenth century. With the rise of factories following the Agricultural Revolution and Enclosure Movement, it allowed goods to be readily available to the public due to mass production from having a large and available workforce. This led to further economic growth within the urban areas. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of this economic growth, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were the lack of working conditions, child labor, and horrible living conditions.
The Industrial Revolution had many long-lasting effects on the English economy and society in the 1800s; the effects being both positive and negative. England’s industrialization resulted in urbanization, improved production, and better transportation, but also in poor living and working conditions for the working class, including many children. Industrialization in England made production of goods much more convenient, creating a greater demand for unskilled labor and a rapidly growing population. The population increase meant that more food was needed in order to feed everyone. In Document 5, Michael Mandelbaum explains that some rural labor was made “redundant,” causing many people to move to urban cities where they could find work in the new factories.
The Industrial Revolution occurred in Britain and America around the late 1700’s to 1900. This revolution improved the production of goods using new mechanisms and machines. Human labor was in high demand in order for the highest production rates. Factories employed low to middle-class people that were as young as three years old (Document 9). These workers were benefited with money, shelter, and clothes, but the working and living conditions were not satisfying. The average industrial worker experienced a variety of factors that can be classified as good or bad, including the positive effects of labor, like the shelter, money, and food they were given; and the negative effects of the factory,
Primary Sources and Social Change of the Industrial Revolution The impact of the Industrial Revolution on the standard of living of working class people is, and has been frequently debated. There is a mass of primary and secondary sources of evidence from the time of the Industrial Revolution available to support differing views of the debate, and there are also many novels available that were written at the time which criticise industrial society, but the difficulty of assessing the total impact of industrialisation upon a population, is how to measure the changes in standard of living. We can look at changes in wages, the changing cost of food, rent and clothing, the impact of the factory
T.S Ashton defends the optimistic view of England’s industrial revolution using the following arguments and evidence. He claims that although there may have been other factors influencing the increase of the standard of living in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, there is no denying that the industrial revolution greatly contributed to the improvement in England (17). The comfort and conditions for workers had begun to improve after the war—and undoubtedly after 1821—due to the rebuilding of the country’s economy, falling costs, and resources being more plentiful (19-20). Using Mr. Imlah’s figures, Ashton calls attention to the falling price of cotton, which did not affect the laborers’ wages, and was due to improvements in
Throughout the Industrial Revolution, everyday lives have improved. More specifically, the classes in Britain of the late nineteenth century. For the average person, the standards of living increased outrageously. Moreover, real wages for British workers doubled within 1850 to 1906. However, greater wages did not eliminate the faults in society. For instance, the wages did not make the rich and poor equivalent. Standards of living such as housing, employment, and fellowship were three improvements for the middle and working class in Britain of the late nineteenth century.
From around 1750 to 1900 Britain went through major changes or transformation in industry, agriculture and transportation that affected everybody’s lives. For some it generally improved their lives, however not all were so lucky. The industrial revolution brought with it many changes good for some and bad for others.
The Industrial Revolution in Britain in the late 1700s and early 1800s was one of the greatest contributions to improvement in the lives of people all around the world. It made the world an easier place to live in and helped to better living and working conditions. Many argue about what were the most important contributions to the success of the Industrial Revolution and most can easily be argued to show that they were very important, but Britain’s resources were crucial to the success of the revolution while its supply of labor and entrepreneurs were close secondary options of being one of the more important reasons for the revolution taking off.
As the economy continues to shift and wealth continues to be distributed further and further away from the middle class, it has become more important to define what you want to be. An individual or society exhibiting conviction, inspiration, innovation, and justice will have a greatly heightened chance of success. Confidence is important in the image your portray, and the way you entice those you work with. Speaking of enticement, inspiring and innovate ideas will also encourage those around you and benefit yourself, evident in how England catapulted above others during the Industrial Revolution, and even inspired America's inventors. Final, and most important to the continued livelihood of not only a society or individual, but us as a civilization,
The three most important factors during the Industrial Revolution were the growth of the railroad, increased levels of immigration, and urbanization. The railroad opened access to raw materials that were shipped to the cities and used to create manufactured goods. They also fueled the partnership between business and the federal government. In the first century of the republic, America experienced a labor shortage. Due to increased levels of immigration in the late 19th century, that was no longer an issue.
The Industrial Revolution was a revolution in every sense of the word, as it altered almost every aspect of live in the nineteenth century including technology, government, communication, environment and eventually society as a whole.1 Although industrialisation created many positives for modern society, for people in Britain up to the end of the nineteenth century it had many significantly negative consequences. With the long term advances made for society came the then current development of overcrowding cities abundant with pollution, health problems and poor living conditions for the working class. These poor conditions continued into the work place with young children exploited as workers as young as the age of four or five.2 There were consequences of the Industrial Revolution for people outside of the core of Britain. India, being the periphery in the model were exploited for their raw materials which were exported to Britain.
The industrial time was good and bad at the same time for every working man that only had one skill that they had to be able to work at their job. It was as well for a time of great opportunities in the work field. The Industrial revolution boom gave an increasing amount of power over to the Americans and the machines that they are producing. The Industrial revolution was a massive change of everyone worldwide affect a lot of men, women and children in the world. It seems that the world was being reborn into a mechanical place of, change for country’s world to view.
There is no doubt that the Industrial Revolution plays a central role in the modern British history. The structure of British society has forever changed by the impact and consequences of Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution is often stated as the increase of the number of factories, the exercise of steam power in a wide range of area and the mass-production produced by new technology in the course of 1750 to 1850 (Lane, 1978: 72). Engles (1986: 37) argued that the Industrial Revolution’s mainly development were the invention of the steam engine and the cotton industry. As the improvement of technology, the steam engine could produce more power with less
The industrial revolution was not only technological revolution but a social one that would lie foundation that would grow the word “revolution” exponentially. The industrial revolution brought with it change, whether that change was positive or negative is questionable however it did change the world as it was known. In both England and the United States of America strong industrial revolutions struck, the revolutions would change roles in the household and society for both women and me and the ideologies held about gender roles. In both countries effected by the revolution, industrialization challenged religion and authority, the impact of which can still be seen today.
America has been expanding and growing since its birth out of Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution has been an influence in the American life since it first in the 1700s. “Most families did not have enough to sell at the market- they had just enough for their own needs.” Up until the factories started booming and employment rates skyrocketed, people really couldn’t become wealthy and live a decent life. As the ways of farming grew the English at the time began to use up more and more land efficiently. “Unusable swamplands could be drained and used for crops.” That’s absolutely amazing that in this era they could turn swamps into areas to raise more crops so they can naturally make more money at the markets and become a bit wealthier. Farming is one of the most important lively hoods of mankind; no matter what argument anyone tries to make. If we didn’t have farming and agricultural production we wouldn’t have all the different sorts of food products we do, nor would they be as abundant. Life would be like it was before the Industrial Revolution came about and most of us would still be growing our own food and barely scraping by in life. With all this agricultural expansion of the time population in England start expanding drastically as well. Thanks to population growth people started to worry more about new inventions and producing stuff for us to make our day to day lives easier than we could have ever before. With all the technological advancements leading up to
