I think that as my time as a DHS student that American History has been one of the most interesting classes that I have taken a part in. I enjoyed learning about how we formed as a countries as well as the issues that we faced internally and how we dealt with them. Something that I had never realized before taking this class was how much art was effected by U.S. principals at the time. For example, in World War II with propaganda in newspapers and in cartoons, we depicted the Japanese as inferior, as well as less intelligent. The reason that they did this was so that people were not intimidated by the Japanese and were not afraid to fight them in the Pacific. Before this year I did not realize the profound effect that art had on society and how people viewed issues of the time. I really enjoyed this class because it focused onto these aspects that other history classes did not go into such depth about and opened my mind to different ways to make connections to ideas.
I think that you would be the ideal teacher to write my recommendation because I felt very comfortable participating in my class and sharing ideas that might not have always been the most mainstream answer. Personally, I think that you can easily see my growth from

I actually enjoyed writing this paper much more than any other because I found it very interesting that I was able to connect something that at first was just a group project that we chose out of our own interest, to primary sources on topics many decades before. I think that in this paper I was effective at being specific and driving my thesis home well. In my opinion, I was able to make interesting connections that tied together the different time periods in American history linking them as one as showing the reader that Americans were more concerned about expanding their sphere of influence out of fear, neglecting human rights in the
a. The global warming and extinction of megafaunal animals allowed agriculture to be born. From this agriculture came inequalities in the social structure due to specialized labor. For the Eastern Woodland Communities, the social inequalities from the agriculture created classes with a chief at the top. They demonstrated power by conquering other tribes in warfare. This was the first time in history when birth determined leaders and upperclassmen.
1. Describe the conditions of the western "borderlands" of the 1830s as well as the factors attracting American settlers.
During the Civil War and Reconstruction period, Republicans made vast efforts in improving domestic economic growth. A transcontinental railroad was first enacted to not only increase the speed of travelling from the Atlantic to the Pacific, but to also increase trade with other nations, and bolster the farming and tourism of the West. The railroad would help populate areas in the West, which would help make America the highway of nations. Private companies were called upon by Republicans to help fund the railroad, even though they were still provided with loans, public grants of land, and various subsidies. These railroad companies had a significant
The English colonies played a major role in progressing the history of the world as well as the national stature of the British who held at being one of the most dominant powers. These colonies established in the New World were not all created for the same reasons hence the initial separation with the only connection coming from past history that intertwined with Europe and eventually from providing raw materials to the Mother Country (Europe). This initial separation explains the individualistic mentality that runs across all colonies. Ranging from religious discrepancies to political/ economic differences. In other words, the main goal was self-protecting and preservation. However, this would not guarantee the brightest of futures. Establishing
Before the Constitution, there was the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was a new national government that reserved freedom, sovereignty, and independence for the states. The Articles of confederation provided an effective form of government for western lands, on the contrary, foreign relations were not were not as well benefited from it.
6. What ultimately happened to the estimated 10 million Indians living in North America at the time of Columbus' arrival?
Looking back at American History, we can see many instances where bravery and courage combined with a leap of faith changed the course of our country's history. The declaration of independence was perhaps the most significant of all those actions. In the late 1700's Britain began abusing their colonies in America, this did not sit well with the colonists, and soon people could no longer endure such unfairness and hardship. The founding fathers were more than justified to declare independence from Britain, liberating the people of America from the tyranny and abuse of the British crown.
In the secondary text Reading the American Past, chapter ten contains five different documents written in the early 1800s. This chapter is title “Republicans in Power” as it covers topics from Thomas Jefferson’s policies for Indians to exerts from a man that served in the War of 1812. Chapter 10 contains documents from Lewis and Clarks journals from their expedition in 1805. Additionally, it holds papers discussing the subject of abolishing slavery in the United States written by a slave. The next document is one that talks against Pennsylvanian law and threats to enslave free African Americans.
According to a recent Smithsonian article, fewer than 20 percent of 8th graders have a basic knowledge of American history. However, while most people disregard the importance of history, there are proven ways that you can expand your own knowledge of the American past.
Will racism ever come to an end or will its path go on infinitely? For the most part, the majority of people respect those who are different either in color, race, and/or heritage; however, there are those few that hold bigoted views towards people who are different than they are. The movie American History X by Tony Kaye displays an example of people who hold bigoted views. Derek, a Neo-Nazi leader, must contend with his actions relating to his past racist views and actions. This powerful movie explores its characters thoroughly and gives reasons why people become so callous and turn towards a racist group. It also exposes insight to problems that plague America when it comes to racism in
My desire to partake in AP US History, is not solely for the understanding of the past and what it entails, although that is an important reason, but to better understand the present and the situations we find ourselves from this day and onward. I am a firm believer that there is much to learn from the past, and many times in recent years I have come to the realization that I am barely qualified to talk about the events of the past, let alone some of the complex issues we face today. For me, AP US History would not only help me better understand our great nation and where it came from, but also be able to analyze and understand problems by being able to come to accurate and meaningful conclusions. I believe that to truly understand our present issues, we should have some semblance to the events which molded and shaped the current world.
This class taught me that I should avoid taking eight-thirty classes if at all possible. I struggled with missing classes due to oversleeping and struggled with staying awake during the classes when I was present. This was due to my poor management of time, balancing ROTC’s morning PT, getting to class, and homework at night. This has taught me that I need to complete work earlier. This class also taught me some more history
Good morning Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Tony Kaye. I am here to discuss my film ‘American History X’ and the various cinematic and literary techniques used to further explore different themes. Extreme close up and close up shots were used in order to develop the theme of racism and hate foreshadowing the message that hate is baggage. Colour and two shot were conveyed to further explore the theme of prejudice and manipulation and to portray the message that one can be blinded by their manipulation. To portray the theme of change symbolism and costume were employed and this demonstrates the message that one can change for the better.
Americas history is what defines us and who we are as a country. We were built on hard work, sacrifice, wanting to be free and independent to be who we want to. Now a-days, we seem to have fallen away from this. Everything is given to us so easily on our computer and through technology that we have no need to work hard anymore. This is the downfall in humanity because as we keep going, life will continue to get easier and we won’t want to do anything. History is our hope so that we can learn from what we did in our past and how things were done then. For starters, we can see what mistakes we did and make sure we don’t do them again. If we continue to the same thing over and over again, there’s no way for our society to improve from this. Our
United States, 2006: a nation with a history of a mere 230 years, yet it stands as one of the most powerful nations in the world. Yet many of us know little about the history and cultural changes that led to the birth of this nation. We only know the bits and pieces that are taught as we sit daydreaming in our fifth grade classroom. The Puritans, the Pilgrims, Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower, we know about these people and things, yet what aspects of their lives created the change in America? The answer to this question can be found by observing the changes in religion, women's role, and colonial law as it brought about the change in the Puritan's cultural values.
