Cosmetic dentistry has come a long way over the years and the days of traditional amalgam fillings are being replaced by the use of composite fillings. Why is it that you would choose composite fillings over traditional amalgam fillings? Amalgam simply means a mixture of metals. In dentistry, amalgam fillings are typically made of mercury, silver, tin and copper and appear silver in color. Some may worry that the mercury in the amalgam fillings is harmful, but
In Roman society, the aristocrafts we know as patricians. For example, the Roman constitution has three elements. The Senate proposes laws and has the control of the treasury. For instance Although nominally allied with Rome, the League offered only tepid support to the Roman army in its campaign against the Kingdom of Macedonia. Born in Megalopolis in Arcadia, central southern Greece, around 201 B.C., Polybius was the son of Lycoris, a prominent politician of the Achaean League, which united most of the city-states of the Peloponnesian peninsula. However with the exception of the first five books, which have survived intact, Polybius's Histories have come down to us in a fragmentary state.

On average, individuals have eight amalgram fillings, which means they are absorbing 120 micrograms of mercury daily. People are also absorbing an average of 2.3 micrograms of mercury from eating fish and other seafoods and an additional 0.3 micrograms from water, air and other foods.
In order to have enough retention for the crown to stay in place, a build- up is done on the tooth before the crown is made. Also, when using an amalgam alloy for a filling, not as much natural tooth structure has to be removed in order to place the filling. Whereas, when using a composite filling, also known as tooth colored or a white filling, the retention of the filling requires removal of more tooth structure in order to have the filling stay in place. Also, there is a concern by some dentists about the longevity of composite fillings. Replacing fillings can get quite expensive for the patients and is not a very cost-effective choice. Most insurance companies will not cover the costs of having tooth colored fillings placed, but they will pay for amalgams, which is another good reason for using amalgam. When a filling lasts longer and does not need to be replaced as often, it is much more cost-effective for the patient. There are other facts to take into consideration. Patients who have “poor oral hygiene” are great candidates for amalgam fillings. (CDC). Amalgam tends to arrest decay and this is extremely helpful for a patient who has poor oral hygiene and is cavity prone. Silver fillings are more affordable (ADA) than composite, insurance companies will recognize them and they are safe.

It is also used in making switches and various other electronic apparatus. It is also used in make thermometers and barometers because of its greatest density of 13.534 gm cm to power of -3, it does not need a large tube to measure the pressure and thermometer. Like in a barometer if we use water then we would need a tube of 10.4m to measure the atmospheric temperature but if we use mercury we can measure the atmospheric temperature in a tube on only 0.76m. In a thermometers because of its large range of the boiling and melting points, it helps us to measure a large range of temperature. It also been used for making batteries. It can also be used to dental amalgams. Mercury is used to make dental amalgam because when it is mixed with amalgam powder, the compound it creates is soft enough to press on the tooth. it also becomes hard very fast which helps it to withstand the force of biting. But it has raised question on whether it is safe and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) evaluated the research and told it is safe for people above 6 years of age.
Metal braces are the traditional type of braces, but they have been upgraded from 50 years ago. Gone are the huge metal brackets that inspired the expression metal mouth. Is it silver filling or dental amalgam? Most people call it silver fillings, while the dentist calls it dental amalgam. "Dental amalgam was developed in France in the 1800's" (Gladwin & Bagby, 2013). In 1833, dental amalgam was introduced to the United States, which started the controversy immediately (Gladwin & Bagby, 2013). People went back and forth debating whether or not dental amalgam was safe or not. Many people do not realize that dental amalgam has been used for over 150 years and is one of the oldest materials in the oral health care ("Dental Amalgam", 1993). Dental amalgam contains a mixture of metals such as silver, which is the largest of filling and adds great strength to the amalgam, tin and copper, which also contribute to strengthening the compound, as well as mercury, which makes these components into a hard, stable, and safe substance that in amounts of up to 50 percent by weight(ADA.org, 2009).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 249,078 babies in 2014 were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a birth rate of 24.2 per 1,000 women in this age group (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016). Certain economic measures, including income, employment rates, and adolescents’ education have negatively impacted teenage birthrates (Lou & Thomas, 2015). According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, in 2013 there were 265,370 teenage childbirth hospital stays, which amounted to $1.1 billion in hospital costs (Fingar and Hambrick, 2016). Wright does not discuss the consumption of mercury through the silver/mercury filling vapors very much. She only points out that people with more fillings have shown to have more mercury content in their urine, with the dentists having performed the fillings having two to fives times as much.
